And we’re back! Just a month after the first South Park Paramount+ special was released we’ve got the follow up and conclusion to the South Park Post Covid duology, and what a conclusion it is. Now with 2 of these under their belt we can expect 12 more over the next 6 years, and if these specials are any indication, I’m really excited to see what they do with the next ones. This special picks up where the last left off, focusing on the kids all grown up, 40 years after the events of the Vaccination special that aired in March, set in an incredibly bleak and depressing future. This special revolves around the kids attempting to go BACK in time so that they can prevent that bleak future from happening.

It shows how dangerous it is to try and fix the future by changing the past. You don't know the outcome of your actions. Cartman sacrificed his love for his family by saving Kyle, resulting in him ending up homeless and their memories were wiped by the change so they don't know that their future selves would end up changing as well.

@@nickgarcia610 Cartman did not love his family. Matter of fact, I think the only reason cartman had a good life in oppose to everyone else is because he succeeded at dividing the community. Every season Cartman tries to divide the community. For the fact that cartman succeeded he was able to move on with his life. If the community gets along with each, then cart man will continue to figure ways to divide the community. So simply put, there is no such thing as a happy ending with everyone including cartman. All the possible things you can say - He doesn't love his family but he loves the community [Fixed Timeline] - He loves both his family and the community, but he recognizes his mistakes and instead saves the community [Fixed Timeline] - He loves his family and not the community [Worst Timeline] HOWEVER - There can be a timeline where he doesn't fix his mistakes to save his family rather, and decides not to sacrifice himself and his family. This one is not in selfishness There CANNOT be a - He hates his family and the town, and therefore decides to sacrifice the good future. If that was true, he would have 'saved his family' in SELFISHNESS [Opposed to the previous future]. We know that isn't true however, BECAUSE HE DOES SACRIFICE HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY. It's because of this that - We know he loved his family and community, and he recognizes his mistakes and fixes the timeline. His children cannot debate this because they won't have happened, and because of this, can't really do anything to bring themself back in the fixed timeline. Yentl herself will stay, however she would also know my previous point, but remains alive.

It's kind of weird, because everyone's endings in every timeline is ultimately a result of their own choices, so cartman and kyle and stan all made their own endings in each timeline. The only difference is that in the timeline where cartman remains friends with kyle and stan he ends up remaining a toxic person, while kyle and stan become better people. In the timeline where cartman gets away from kyle and stan he becomes a better person, while stan becomes a depressed alcoholic and kyle becomes a bitter cynical asshole.

Imagine who else can be changed? We know in real life especially by the prison rates in Nordic countries that humans are capable of great changes when given those opportunities. Rabbi Cartman lost his family, his life, his future for all the people of South Park and really the world could become better versions of themselves. I feel like Cartmans wife made a great observation that ever since he was with Kyle and Stan again they brought out the worst in him. She was able to get to the core of him and show him the love he wanted and needed in his life. There could be some parental issues as well since he became the father he never had but wanted and his wife was the exact opposite of his mother. I would of loved for him to find his wife again and still have a good life while changing if not still having some anger issues from his friends but distanced himself from everyone but Kenny. (His wife could even of hated going back to his home town for the holidays because "you always act differently when you are around those old friends of yours other than Kenny"

I do think he'd change around Kenny too though but in a different way. He's very manipulative to Kenny at times, I think that might rear it's head again. Cartman redeemed himself and even had a family, a wife that loved him, a good honest life and sacrificed it all so everyone else could be happy. That alone really hurts because it means his family is nullified in this new reality. He never converts to Judaism, marries Yentel and never has his cute kids. He may have been a monster when he was 8 years old, but 40 years of redemption was taken away from him for no other reason, but to insure the happiness of everyone else. This version of Cartman will never be known and they even mocked him one last time as he was outside the restaurant. That put more salt on the proverbial wounds. They could never imagine a timeline where he would ever change... Except the one that saved them all.

The thing that interests me about Cartman's futures is that he is not a character you can redeem without ending the show. He's become the most consistent and entertaining antagonistic force within south park and to remove him from that role especially as we approach season 24 would be very tricky. But some of you may say, they just did that. These two specials showed he could be a good guy, and that's only half true. As soon as he realised HIS happy ending was on the line he wanted to maintain it, showing despite it all he still has his Selfish streak but thanks to the positive influences of his family he's able to do what must be done for the greater good...and of course it being south park he gets screwed over. But as South Park is FAR from over the same can be said for Cartman, he's still gotta be the selfish monster we get so much entertainment out of. Maybe he'll get a happy ending, maybe not but in order for him to have a happy ending the show kind of has to end.

It's also interesting that Kyle's kids in the ending look so alike to Rabbi Cartman's kids, it makes me wonder who the mother is since they never showed her. In general the ending was such a double-edged sword, it made me happy to see everyone happy and Sharon and Shelley alive but Cartman deserved better. It really seems like it's Kyle & Stan Vs. Although Cartman did do a selfless act, people are forgetting that Cartman destroyed his OWN future lol. Stan and Kyle did not intervene with anything. Whatever adolescent/teenager/young adult Cartman did with his time/ life right after their adult versions came and convinced them to repair their friendship was entirely all on him. Sure, Cartman being separated and isolated from his friends likely forced him to reflect, mature, and change for the better, but even when the friendship was repaired and renewed, he still had the freedom to make better choices and to become a better version of himself, BUT it was entirely up to him to do so. Kyle saying that he did nothing with his life is a clear implication that over the years Cartman did nothing to self-improve, thus leading him to where he is now, unfortunately. Is this the ending we wanted for him, absolutely not! Does he deserve it considering all of the terrible things he must have done during his childhood up to where he is now, perhaps.

I think you're missing the point. Cartman didn't destroy his future. The circumstances of being around Kyle and Stan made him into a toxic person. His wife tells him that since he returned to South Park and hung out with Kyle and Stan that he's become a different person than the man she married. It shows that his choices are not wholly his own, but due to the circumstances of his environment. There's a great debate on nurture vs nature and some people lean on nurture i.e the environmental circumstances which create outcomes vs nature i.e the predispositions of are natural state or biology if you will. This special shows us that Cartman isn't a bad child. He's just broken and largely because of his friends and his environment. 40 years as a Rabbi and a redeemed father, spouse and overall good person shows us that Cartman isn't a bad person he saved everyone else at the expense of his family and his life. That's where most people are disheartened. He deserved a better ending.

Your religion, your cultural views, even how you see yourself as a person changes. Cartman was influenced by his toxic environment and especially his terrible relationship with Stan and Kyle. If removed from this cycle of abuse. He changed. Genuinely into a good person within 40 years he became a rabbi and an exemplary husband and father. That's proof nurture trumped his natural inclinations. We are only the product of our choices as so far as the environment allows those choices to be made and available. Bad environment creates likelihood for bad choices. A self destructive cycle as we see at the end of the show.

OG Future Cartman became a better person because he got away from Kyle. Without Kyle around, Cartman had no reason to be anti-sematic and actually embraced Jewish belief. But when he returned to being around Kyle, he embraced his old manipulative ways. Just like with Cartman's kids, Kyle brings out the worst in him. So yeah, in a future where the boys stayed friends; Cartman stayed the horrible piece of shit he was. No, it's not Kyle's fault. Like in alot of episodes, Cartman is the mastermind of his own misery.

His wife even mentioned that ever since he returned to South Park he was acting different. So he saved everyone lost his children which he loved more than anything else. On the special itself, it was pretty good but I kind of hoped we would get more interactions of them with their younger selves. I feel that it could have probably been a three part story, with TROC being a transition episode, because more interactions with themselves would have been extremely interesting. The stuff they did with Butters was extremely fun and something that was shocking but totally in line with his character. The moments with Randy and Stan were that mix of sad and humorous that South Park is good at, especially with that scene outside of the school. The Alexa stuff was quite funny even if a little pointless, and I'm glad we got to see more of the aged up characters again. However, the ending felt so out of character for literally everyone, at least in my opinion. I don't think that Kenny, Kyle, Stan or even Butters would just leave Cartman to wallow out on the streets. I wonder if in the future seasons/specials they'll explain how Cartman's character became to be that way but considering past seasons it just doesn't make sense. In Jewpacabra, Kyle literally carries Cartman back home even after making fun of Jewish people the entire episode. Kenny continued to message him in the original Post Covid timeline even after their broship broke up, which doesn't occur in this timeline, so it doesn't make sense how they practically shun him out in the final seconds of the special. Cartman also seems extremely smart/manipulative and has found success before with his Christian Rock Band and other endeavours. It also isn't really the smartest decision narratively to explain how the future will pan out in the now fixed timeline as they may be limited to telling the story in a way that ends with what we have currently. A lot of people also explain how Cartman deserved it for his past actions but considering Kyle has nuked all of Canada, and the boys are all juvenile in some level, it doesn't feel earned. Considering the fact that he was 9/10 when most of the series takes place, it kind of gives off the message that people deserved to suffer terribly for things they did when they were younger. Obviously, it doesn't excuse the fact that he has done some actual heinous things but in this context when we have seen him grow it just doesn't feel justified.

the timeline that took place in the specials no longer happens because the kids friendship was saved. so once the friendship was saved the future versions of themselves that went back to prevent clyde from killing kyle no longer exist. cartman explains this when giving his speech before sending clyde to the future. he states that none of them would be there or remember the speech he's giving because once clyde kills kyle the future would change. even though clyde did not kill kyle, the future is still changed because the adult versions of stan, kyle and cartman saved their friendship by getting the kids to the nuggets basketball game and giving randy the last piece of tegridy weed to give out for free so people would be nicer to each other, thus the versions of everyone in the specials no longer end up existing. instead the final scene of everyone happy together as adults and cartman homeless becomes the true future / present.

i think he's definitely done good in the past. for example, keeping all the cats safe in that one episode even for other people, letting go of the pangolin to be tested even after he wanted to stay home for the pandemic, saving kyle's life at least once from the smug. and now in the special, saved the broship by sacrificing his family. it's difficult to say all his bad actions were out of genuine cruelty rather than ignorance considering the fact that he was 9/10 when he did a bunch of the things, and in certain episodes he does get what's coming to him but the TROC ending just feels kind of shit. i find it also upsetting how we know how much cartman has grown through his faith and learnt to be happy while kyle was just stuck. and in the end, kyle didn't really learn anything and he still has everything handed to him on a silver platter. maybe it's the way the characters are presented but kyle definitely has a higher body count from bombing all of canada so i wouldn't say that only cartman deserved a bad ending if we take past actions into account. so only cartman ending up in a terrible position doesn't feel deserved at all.

The thing is that in the 40 years leading up to the first part, Cartman never expressed any remorse or sought any repentance for the heinous shit that he did. He genuinely loved his wife and children, but he never tried to make good on any of the trauma and abuse he dealt to others. Giving up his family was essentially that repentance; and with the timeline reset, he proved that he was unable to replicate his happiness while his friends also grew up happily, which hints that maybe he never deserved it in the first place.

Sorry to hop in on the discussion here…. But whilst I agree Cartman definitely grew as a person away from his friends it can definitely be questioned how much he grew. His inability to admit his wrong doings to Kyle (in terms of the absolutely worst things he did to him) kind of indicates that he was sort of living a double life. One where he has good characteristics and is a very kind supportive person to those he cares about whilst also maintaining at his core this sort of childish selfishness, meanness and inability to take responsibility, maintaining a similar attitude of old Cartman towards those he doesn’t care for (ultimately only abandoning these sorts of characteristics when forced to by the people he cares about). And ultimately the reason Cartman progressed as a person could potentially be put down to being able to abandon his old life Scot free without any repercussions or being held to account by people like Kyle. Plus whilst I totally agree that Kyles lack of growth is due to his codependency on the broship (having a friend in Stan and an enemy in Cartman), I think it’s unfair to really state the same for Stan. I think Stans ability to grow as a person and maintain healthy relationships largely came due to Randy becoming a better person. Whilst there may be some aspects of the friendship he needed to develop, ultimately I think having his mother and sister still alive and not having his dad blaming him for their deaths probably helped him steer away from the alcohol and away from a relationship with an Alexa which was similar to his parents. (Sorry the long response I just find this discussion really interesting)

My theory is that Cartman’s dependence to Kyle destroyed him. It fuels his toxicity, but he chooses not to leave. And it would have been such as easy thing to fix! If future Cartman excluded his younger self from the game, he would’ve been happy. And it wouldn’t have affected anyone else! The reason Kyle and Stan had a bad future is because Kyle and Stan were no longer friends. They didn’t need Cartman, and Cartman needed not them. I also don’t believe the Tegrity affected their private lives, only made everyone else’s much better. So Butter’s (for example) improved outside of the boys’ relationship.

I kinda feel its important, especially in this day and age, to show positive outcomes for those who are being selfless. It really sucks that the only character who had everything to lose if the future was changed had lost it, especially considering it weighed heavily on him and put faith in that he would still meet his wife and kids. He should have been rewarded for the selfless act rather than messed up for it. It also sucks that a character who had redeemed themselves in one lifetime would get that taken away as well. I liked how they showed that cartman can change for the better, that really bad people can change, kinda brings some hope. But they took all that away in this ending....

Old video, I know, but I thought this since this special released. I always assumed that, yes, Cartman was getting that "perfect" Jewish family to annoy Kyle, at least at the beginning. He definitely would have done something so extreme just to get back at someone for something small. I assume that Cartman could have changed in one of a off screen life moments; he could have changed upon getting to know his wife, seeing her and how happy he actually makes him or he could have changed upon the birth of his first child, as the birth of one's own child is very often said to be a largely positive life changing moment. I think that it would be unlikely but not impossible if he changed while transitioning to the Jewish faith because he probably started that transition early after the group splits therefore he is still filled with that revenge energy rather than the happiness he gains.

I can't believe everyone has fallen for the biggest Cartman scam ever. He tries to kill Kyle in this special! For no reason other than Kyle knows Cartman is still a shit person and no one else sees it. It's the same formula we've seen so many times. Yes Cartman may have genuinely loved his family but he was still very quick to turn back to his old manipulative ways. New future Cartman has no idea he 'once' had a family. If he wanted to change his life around he still could have. It's Cartman. He's comic relief, not a character we should feel sorry for.

The ending is an alternative reality and not canon. Why? Because in the real world Space Jam 2 is a thing, forever. Which I think is pretty clever detail the writers included for people that get attached to this storyline.

Or maybe Space Jam 2 still happened but either LeBron gave in and did it anyway or they got some other NBA star to do it anyway.

I truly felt the most sympathy for Eric the most. His original future counterpart sacrificed his own happiness to save the friendship of his own close friends only to have a future with him hating all of them and never having the family and life changes he previously had. Which makes me feel like Kyle robbed him from the life he should Been his.

I thought that the last piece of tegridy actually symbolised forgiveness. Randy gave it to Stan in the only scene where he finally tells Stan that it wasn’t his fault, of course he changed his mind briefly after that but. Still I think that tegridy weed represents forgiveness in the finally because it finally let people say that “Maybe it was partly my fault.” Idk if I’m right, just seemed interesting to me.

What bothers me about cartmans new future its that we saw that he can actually become a better person, its not like i want cartman getting to live his life free from any consequences bc he is in fact a horrible person in the present, but seeing that he can improve and be a better person and then in the other timeline where we see he become a homeless alcoholic its kind of depressing, but we can choose to see it as karma for his past horrible actions which its kind of deserved if you think about it.

Clyde also apparently didn't have a happy ending in the revised future. He was nowhere to be found, not even mentioned.

The fact that cartman is happy in the worse possible timeline also the timeline where he ends his friendships with Kenny Kyle and Stan is the one he is happy in being friends with Kyle and Stan and Kenny only brought his life down

I actually almost cried, hearing about Cartman's ending. I rarely ever cry as an adult due to the shit I've experienced in my life so far, so that should say something.

Cartman really just needed to still be separated from the friend group regardless so his future could've remained the same. His erased Jewish wife says that he turned into this different person thanks to being in the town of South Park and near Kyle. That's what screwed him up. They basically needed to invite only Kyle, Stan and Kenny to the game and leave Cartman out.

@@mattgieseke8302 I'd agree except in the Casa Bonita Episode Cartman had plenty of time to set up his plan to get rid of Butters, the boys went to the game straight away so Cartman likely wouldn't be able to scheme his way into the invitation like usual. He might not even know the 3 boys were invited.

I kinda of got the vibe from both specials that Cartman was still a narcissist faking hos way through a normal life. When he checked on his family in the attic and his daughter said she was writing a diary, it seemed like he was trying not to laugh - like a thing he'd work hard to do as a kid just for some horrible, bad taste Jewish jokes. I don't blame Kyle for refusing to let his family stay and not believing him - he was the butt of harassment from Cartman for years. Even so, alcoholic homeless Cartman doesn't seem right, either. In my brain, he'd probably be some management type who kissed ass to get where he was and pretends to be a "normal" guy, and constantly use his tiny bit of power to belittle his underlings when his higher-ups aren't paying attention.

@NEED2CONNECT Yeah, those were terrible, too. I just used a couple examples instead of an exhaustive list of all the horrible things Cartman has done over the series.

I have a theory: there were episode in 2002 (My Future Self 'n' Me) in which Cartman became CEO of a time-traveling company (And time travel invented Keny), then he traveled in time and said about it to past Cartman. However he don't believe in it and said that he would eat unhealthy food and doing drugs, after that future Cartman into drug addict plumber. So theory ''Return of COVID'' ending it's actually 3rd timeline, while in 2nd Cartman stay friend with boys and basicly took Butters place as Keny Investor, became his CEO, but after he back in time Cartman ruin his life and became drug addict, which would led him to became homeless (in ''My Future Self 'n' Me'' he was like 35-40, while in paramount special he is 50 years old and lose everything)

I mean, I'm not the only one here, but I'm iffy on Cartman's new fate. For one, I feel bad for him. Cartman truly loved his family and showed that an asshole like Eric was redeemable; he sacrificed his happy ending so that everyone else could. That said, there's a part of me who felt Eric deserved it. For goodness sake, it's CARTMAN; he's been a piece of shit for over twenty years, and as Butters claims, he had this coming for living a life of psychopathy and hate.
