This video brought a tear to my eye. South Shields councils has a talented for destroying its heritage, rather than maintaining it. I live in South Shields and can just remember the original train platform, both happy and sad to see it once more. Great video.

Hi Tony, what a great pictorial history that was. Good to see it in its heyday but very sad it had to decline into the ruins. I personally believe you have resurrected a gem of historical importance in the model. Hats off to you mate, you deserve some kind of recognition by the local council for all the work and accuracy you have shown.. All the best from us both..

Morning Tony, these are a wonderful collection of pictures documenting the history of south shelds, its also so sad to watch such a structure fall into disrepair. When you think of the lives this station has affected, livelihoods, journey's to all parts of the world. Your magnificent structure is a tribute to those lives. So enjoying the next step on your tribute to the north east, Jarrow road the name alone brings up memories. Enjoyed watching the interview with Adi learned a few more facts about the development of your fantastic layout. Take it easy my friend stay safe Eddy and family xx.

Good morning Eddy. there are still a few little clues that there was once a station on mile end road. a couple of tracks where put in for the Metro. platform 2 wall is still there. entrance posts to the old goods yard. but as for the rest there now stands a new housing estate. just below riverside bridge. its a piece of history that should be remembered. and i hope that i have done that. many thanks for commenting my friend. best wishes to you and your family. Hi Peter. South Shields is well known for its sandy beaches on the mouth of the River Tyne. and its Roman Fort. it became a great tourist hub in the early 1800s. its was also well for its industries. with its ship yards, merchant navy, coalmines and the exports of iron ore and coal. but sadly the only left now is its tourism and its oil rig repair yards. you know even more now. enjoy your Sunday...many thanks stay safe Tony

What a fantastic reproduction! Very talented work indeed. I only remember the station as a very little boy back in the late 70s. I do remember the mechanical chocolate vending machine on the wall though! Nestle crunch if I hadn’t caused too much trouble while shopping with mum in Sunderland. One day we got on the wrong train and ended up in Morpeth. Mum had nodded off after lugging me and four heavy carrier bags around all day. The conductor was very sympathetic and helped us get back home on the right train eventually. Our little adventure she called it. Happy days. Thanks so much for sharing the photos and bringing happy memories back 😁❤️

I fell a little sad though, seeing great architecture being lost. Unfortunately, in Brazil, there is little or none whasoever, respect to old buildings. Hi Tony, time may march on but it is still sad to these these places that were once important milestones in our lives falling into ruin and being demolished. I remember seeing on the media the pictures of the hospital where i trained as a male nurse, recognising many of the corridors and wards where i had once walked lying in ruins and waiting to be demolished. I must say it brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat that these things had now gone, never to be replaced. It's strange that you can feel so much even for an inanimate thing like a building, but I suppose it's what those things represent that counts. They may build better railway stations - better hospitals even - but they can never rebuild better memories. Another Great Video, thanks.

Wow dear Tony, what a beautiful historic oversight in slides on South Shields station. Wasn’t aware until now this marvel of railroad architecture had been demolished. 1998 you stated. Humbly think when it would have survived beyond 2000, South Shields would have been considered a municipal monument at the very least. Can only guess that’s the after effect of miss ironclad’s reign and personal dislike towards any transportation rolling on an iron road. Such utterly short sighted barbarians that tory folk. Of course, no offense, can’t possibly dream what you two would vote for. Lol. Anyhow, whilst the true scale South Shields has disappeared from the face of the earth, your eloquent and beautiful work of preservation renders even more importance. By rebuilding this very gem in 1:76 OO-scsle. Definitely has museum potential when it would be up to yours truly. Very much enjoy and appreciate all your vids and building projects. Thanks, have a great weekend!!!

Good morning Vincent. I totally agree with your comment. if i had the power i would go round every town slapping preservation orders on any building that was built before the 1930s. even in that period they were building buildings to last. when i visited the city of Bath, i was in awe due to the amount of saved historical buildings. hence i built the oldest pub in bath. but as for the station being a museum piece yes i would love the station to go into a museum. once i am gone and i have had my fun with it. as you i am not finished yet, Jarrow is next on the list. until next time my friend....stay safe Tony

What wonderful photos, some wonderful and of course sad ones to. I can see where you got the inspiration tony to build what was once a beautiful northern station, I think I told you how I remember Truro station with its large steam shed, large sidings lots of wagons of all sorts, last days of steam, St Agnes where I was born had a lovely little station, mum taking me to Truro on a Saturday shopping on a steam train, 2 coaches that was a service from Perranporth, the locomotive was a prairie then came along the DMUs, by 1964 branch line closed, preservation society tried buying it off British railways for £10.000 I'm may be wrong! But they got the money together and BR raised the money so sadly all ripped up. Keep up the good work on south shields and keep well and safe, Camborne central..........

It is a shame that the station has gone in South Shields but a smaller version still exists at the North Eastern and you must be justly proud, Tony, for your outstanding achievement in that regard. Looking forwards to more progress at Jarra Road. Have a good weekend. Best, Jason.

Hi Jason, i do like watching those old rail films. hence that's where i get a lot of my inspiration from as you know. I am proud of our little achievement building south shields. from which I dont think I could have done it justice without these photographs...Jarra road will be back next week, see you then my friend. cheer's Tony

The first time I went to South Shields by Metro in 1985, I met Cindy Young, I was taking photos of the railway, but didn't have much film and took some pictures of her instead. Wish I'd known demolition was around the corner, I I would have come back sooner, when I did it had gone. Don't know what happened to Cindy, last I knew she had moved from Pennywell to Washington.

Good morning Richard, Even that old metro station is now gone. that one was one on the King Street bridge, there's not a trace left now. they did a great job of making that disappear. thank for sharing your memories. i wonder if she still has the photos. thanks again Richard, all the best Tony

@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Mornin' Yes I saw it on the news. I had hoped they could have done something with the old place like they did with the some of the stations on the loop. Whitley Bay looks like it has been looked after and I think they use the space for craft shows and such like. Just goes to show its not just Sunderland that knocks down all the old buildings, Shields can do it too! Be nice to think she kept the photo, she was wearing a leather suit at the time and was bonny. All the best Tony and thanks for posting. Richard

Hi Tony. I visited South Shields on the Metro several times in the late 1998 and 1999 for drinks with work colleagues. The station buildings you showed and modelled, was that on the opposite side of the tracks to what I believe is now the old Metro station as I dont recall that frontage back in the day. Mind I might have been mortal then!

Hi TheFlydeFlyer, I had was in shields before Easter and looked around the old station to see what was left of the original building. there was not a lot left to see. so i went for a pint at the royal British legion. at least that old building is still there....have a great weekend, cheer's Tony

Lovely stuff Tony! Great to see how the station developed and evolved, though of course also sad to see how it declined and ultimately disappeared 🤔 Really enjoyed it mate and good to see the new projects are coming along nicely too 😜👍🍀🍻

Disgusting that Shields's wonderful station was left to rot--That old Victorian building was wonderful--then they built a similar one -- DOH !!!--I could have been similar to Tynemouth, with a beautiful Market etc-but no--like a lot of places in Shields--Left to Rot----Sad but true !!

I am in agreement. it is shame. Tynemouth is a well preserved station with most of its original structure and rightly so. Whitley Bay station also has been saved. I wonder how long the new south shields metro station will last...as south shields lasted just over 130years.....

Its a sad fact back that since the second world war builders and town planners have always not considered renovating the older buildings. it seems its easier to knock them down and put up new. then again its what they call progress. mind you they have done a cracking job on big ben in London...thanks for commenting very much appreciate it...cheer's Tony

@@TONYNORTHEASTERN That Water Tower as well--There was a house next to the level crossing at Beal on the ECML that had a tank from a similar water tower (It was on supports in the garden, which also had an Orchard)--It was a lovely cottage and was for Sale in 1991 for the grand total of £48,000--I viewed it and nearly bought it, but like an idiot I bought a place in Cumledgemill in Duns instead 'cos my girlfriend at the time (Who I stupidly married, liked the Duns house better!)--Such a shame that the people who eventually bought the place, knocked it down, made it into 2 , got rid of the Orchard & WATER TANK-----Loonies !!

Hi Graham. its funny that you mentioned the name Tunbull. as it seems very familiar. I did grow up in south shields and i do remember a family call Turnbulls. the street that i lived in was Stevenson's street. they pulled that down, ans we moved to Tyne Lane on the deans estate. then they pulled that down. then we moved into John Williams road. and again they pulled most of that down, we then ended up on King George Road. before finally moving into Ash Grove Avenue. when i got married we moved into the Crossway by the nook. before leaving shields altogether in 1993. but i did visit regularly, last time was Easter just gone. my step father was known as Renwick. stay safe my friend...cheer's Tony
