It began as prairie land and swiftly developed into a booming train and automotive industry. Houses, churches, local business rushed in and the long strip we know now as South Tacoma Way developed as a major part of Tacoma's history. Join us for this FREE virtual tour, brought to you by the City of Tacoma's Historic Preservation Office. We will look at the historic buildings that remain and how they have contributed to the legacy of Tacoma.

My dad used to take to Steves Gay 90s when i was a young teenager. Such good memories. South Tacoma Way was and is part of the fond memories of my young years in the 50s and 60s. Thank you i am glad to see it again.

Chris, I found you about a week ago, and in my spare time I'm hooked! I live in Poulsbo, and have lived here 31 years. I love history and you fill the bill for me. Thanks you so much for your knowledge and enthusiasm.

What a damn treat your channel is. I just found you and became a quick subscriber. I've lived in Tacoma my whole life, and while I'd love to live in a different environment, Tacoma is a relatively very nice place to live. So I find it hard to think of another place atleast just as good. Anyway, I live very close to South Tacoma Way, so to see these familiar sights and to know more backstory on them has been very awesome. I also love your ghost stories, as I have been a paranormal nut since I was a kid. Thanks for all your efforts! 😊

My family is from South Tacoma. When I was a kid in the 1970's, The B&I was the Greatest Place on Earth.😎

I was born in 77 and my dad used to take me to see Ivan most weekends and then I remember late 80’s they put water slides in - I never went to them But I remember the smell 👃 in there

@@cristymanning-rivero4992 Ya, that was the children of the original owner that put in those water slides, caused them to be sued numerous times and really led to the downfall of the place. Old Man Irwin, the original owner was a marketing genius. Too much to type here, but I even took my first Helicopter ride from the B&I Parking lot for $5 Dollars when I was about 7. Just as an example.

We used that old airport, which is located just west of S. Tacoma Way, as a Dragstrip in the 80's.

First house on South Oakes here. 1905 Edison neighborhood. We have negatives of our house standing alone with nothing around it. The massive hemlock in the front yard was just a sappling then. We do our best to keep the house beautiful and representative of its histrical structure. Yes its also haunted. White corner house 66th and South Oakes

My father’s cousin was Don Wilson, the rhythm guitarist for the Ventures (the best selling instrumental rock group of all time that was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). I remember hearing stories about him playing at Bob’s Java Jive when the Ventures were in their infancy.

The shops were there for the railroad, but the roundhouse was the big thing, so the trains could turn around there. Steves gay 90s was playing on the 1890s, ao they tried to have a 1890s saloon feel.

The Hallock Bldg on 5402 hosted the McKee Motor Co when it first opened in 1927. It became Safeway by 1930-1934 and later Totem Grocery by 1940. The upstairs had a separate entry at 5402 1/2 and it served as a dentist's offihouse. DR Paul Hallock and later served as a hotel or boarding house.

Thank you so much for your tours and information about a place that I have so many memories from my childhood. Although I lived in Richland most of that time, my grandmother lived on South Tacoma Way across the street and up a few houses up from the Roller Rama. My brother and I spent a lot of time there. The B&I arcade was where we would hang out in the 50’s early 60’s. The carousel was the main attraction along with the different dime rides. Ivan was housed there as was a chicken. Ivan’s life can only be described as cruel and deplorable. It exemplifies human greed and to the extent people will tolerate for their own entertainment. His life was a sad and painful existence. 🦍😢 Dining at Steve’s Gay 90’s, Busch’s and The Top of the Ocean were always fun.
