1st visit to Winchester on the South Western Main Line
Featuring services from South Western Railway and CrossCountry Trains
Winchester first opened in 1839 on the former London & Southampton Railway as a temporary terminus on the same day as Basingstoke became the temporary terminus on the London to Basingstoke section
It wasn't until the following year when both lines were linked however engineering was a difficult challenge included the construction of 4 tunnels and a intimidate stop back then at Andover Road now todays Micheldever.
Two other lines were constructed to link up at Winchester with one being linked via Guildford, Farnham and Alton.
Winchester had at one time two stations with the present one being renamed in 1949 as Winchester City whilst another was Winchester Chesil on the former Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway.
The line between Alton and Winchester was closed in 1973 although the section between Airesford and Alton is now preserved as part of the Watercress Line on the Mid Hants Railway with Alton being the temporary of London Waterloo services via Aldershot which diverge from the SWML at Brookwood
The link between Airesford and Winchester was taken over by housing overtime and being close to the M3 Motorway
The 2nd line was built by the former Great Western Railway known as the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway which served the former Winchester Chesil which was located to the East. The former route was an alternative route linking up the Berks & Hants Line at Newbury and then carrying on Northwards before joining the GWML East of Didcot now todays Didcot Parkway.
The line was closed to Passengers in 1962 before closing to freight completely in 1964
The closure of Winchester Chesil resulted in Winchester City station being renamed Winchester in 1967
The footbridge with Step Free Access dates from 2013 which included other new facilities at the time.
Today South Western Railway services operate half hourly Weymouth services operated by a pair of Class 444s however some advertised as Weymouth & Poole divide at either Southampton Central or Bournemouth although most 10 car Weymouth services dividing at Bournemouth.
Front sets carry on towards Weymouth whilst the rear sets either terminate via a reversing siding at Bournemouth or form a stopping service to Poole.
Hourly Portsmouth Harbour services via Basingstoke mainly served by Class 450s which diverge after Eastleigh towards Hedge End and Fareham
In recent times South Western Railway occasionally run hourly shuttle services between Winchester and Southampton Central with a few carrying on towards Bournemouth. For terminating services from Southampton Central terminate via the Winchester Baltic Siding which on the Down Line just to the North of Platform 2.
CrossCountry Services mostly hourly nowadays originate from Manchester Piccadilly via Birmingham New Street, Oxford and reverse at Reading down towards Basingstoke.
Operated by Class 220 and 221 Voyagers which is nowadays their main intercity fleet after the withdrawal of the legendary HST sets in September 2023.
