Weird how watching this and being reminded of my childhood made me forget all my worries for 3 mins😢 when the summers where long and hot. Sadness when looking at the past... if only I could step back for 10 mins and breathe in the air

Some of those shots were in Westvale, not Southdene - the Johnny Todd for example, and one of the shots of flats. I recognised them all...Broad Lane (I used to live just off it), the Banners' van - I bought all my Beatles records at the time from Banners - Park Brow Drive...I left Kirkby for good in 1981, only revisiting now and again until my adoptive parents died many years ago - this is exactly how it is fixed in my memory. I've had a long career as a musician and academic, and now live between the SW of France and Luxembourg. The little boy who used to play on the wall outside the chippy in Broad Lane in 1965 couldn't have imagined what lay ahead.

My father was the manager of Banners back the. My mum looked after the records and I worked selling records on a Saturday. Sorry but it was Broad Lane Southdene not Park Brow. My wife was a Saturday girl in the bread/cake shop and we left Kirkby in 1968.

@@davidbennion3774Do you recall the name of the department store that used to sell records😅 in the market square next to Forbuoys? Can’t find it anywhere. Banners was great in the late 50s it saved a trip into Liverpool. The market stalls also sold records later

So we used to cut thru the alley at the Johnny Todd to go and bunk into the stadium in 65 Always a crowd of men playing pitch and toss against the pub wall And sorry to say there was also plenty of wrecked cars We used to play on the river alt and the workings for the new road system

I love the perspectives being posted here. Some from those who, long ago, left Kirkby. As well as those who stayed. I wasn’t around in the 60’s. Grew up in the 80’s. I neither stayed, nor left completely. Not in my mind. And I still go back once or twice a year in the hols to catch up with family. And it’s interesting to see that many things featured here are how I remember them. But with different cars, clothes and hairstyles😆

Kirkby, I don't care what anyone says, in the 60s this was a great place to live. I still have family there yet I moved away about 35 years ago. I remember the flats being built not only in Southdene the ones in Northwood and Quarry Green too. Does anyone remember the army base in Quarry Green? and the barracks that became Quarry Green infant School, I also remember fields that spread out all around Kirkby, as a kid with my mates we would go out early in the morning during the summer holidays and take on adventure after adventure due to the innocence of the place. To echo Andrew Heyes it would be brill to step back in time and take a breath.

@@terrysmith9362 Back in the mid 1990s I recall the Council received a letter from a US resident inquiring if he could visit what he recalled was the old US military detention centre in Quarry Green. He was in his advancing years and wanted to see the buildings he once worked in, during a forthcoming visit he was making to the UK. Sadly the Mayors office informed him there was no longer any of the white buildings or the old school, or shops that would today face the Quarry Green social club. He was sent some mementoes. Growing up a teenager in Kirkby in the 1960s. The number of nice pubs and social clubs allowed friendships to be made. Plenty of work locally and in Liverpool. Kirkby Urban District Council created many great facilities that were years ahead of most UK cities ( Sports Centre and Stadium. Swimming Pool superbly located. And in conjunction with Lancashire County Council some of the finest, and successful Comprehensive schools. Due to the management of Kirkby's housing being with Liverpool City Council, the sheer size of the housing stock made regular maintenance sporadic. I always recall some female friends me and my mate made in Newquay in 1970, and who were from Essex, came to Northwood in 1970 and thought the Woodpecker was brilliant, as well as the Bier Keller underneath Rigby's pub in Dale Street. The loss of the pubs and social clubs have limited contact for todays generation.

Wrecked cars left in fields with 'thanks a lot mate' scratched into them, teacher stabbed in assembly, another teacher beaten up when he was getting petrol, gangs everywhere, shop windows with grids and padlocks and petrol pumps chained up. Ah yes the good old days of the 1960's.

I very much remember that kind of thing in the 70s, but not the 60s...the 60s were much quieter, and much of Kirkby (it was a lot smaller then, no Tower Hill yet, no M57 etc) was still new and as yet untarnished.
