Here we see a variety of Class 377 trains at speed compilation on some of GTRs core railway lines filmed in various locations in 2021. All trains were seen approximately travelling in excess of 55mph and on average around 75mph. Some trains went as fast as 90mph although class 377s are capable of reaching speeds of 100mph but are restricted to 90mph or lower on third rail routes.
About Class 377s
Class 377s are a British dual voltage electric multiple unit passenger train built by Bombardier Transportation on it's Electrostar platform at Derby Litchurch Lane Works from 2001 to 2014. All of which are operated by Govia Thameslink Railway and Southeastern (Since December 2016). These trains work on suburban services in South London and mainline commuter services to Sussex, Surrey, Kent and the South Coast replacing the old slam door trains that did not meet modern health and safety requirements. However they did not enter service until 2003 due to troubled introduction. Their higher power consumption compared to the trains they replaced led to more major upgrades being required to the 750V DC third-rail power supply. These trains come in 3, 4 and 5 car configurations with the 5 car units being a later generation variant (more identical to the class 387). Class 377/2, 377/5 and 377/7 are the only dual-voltage sub-classes fitted with pantographs to pick up power from overhead lines. These trains are undergoing a 5 year programme to refurbish all of Southerns class 377s as part of a £55 million investment to provide more reliability & benefit passenger experiences on longer journeys.
