The longest north - south route in the United States, Route 1 connects coastal towns from Key West, Florida to its terminus in northern Maine stretching 2,369 miles connecting nearly every major city from Boston to Miami on the Atlantic Ocean. This portion connects the beachside villages of Saco and Old Orchard Beach, Maine to Portland, Maine just a few hours north of Boston, Massachusetts. Interstate 95 sits just west but nearly all of Maine's tourist destinations on the coast are connected by this primary route. One of my personal favorite travel destinations southern Maine is a haven for art communities, famous maine lobster, and beach bums.
