I don't understand the compulsion for the raised track bed. In USA we run 1" scale equipment on the ground. The engine may be a master piece, but the train for the raised track bed is Oh My God awful.
It's presumably for leg room. As you'll notice, most of these guys are elderly, and probably wouldn't enjoy squatting on the trains the way you'd have to at 5" gauge. I hope to do some 1.6" scale stuff in the US, it seems like the most popular size.
