@drh100 pop along to any council depot and have a chat to the guys collecting the bins, they see everything. People are not only trash, but want to live in/surrounded by trash.
@drh100 Meaning? Small minded frightened, disappointed bigots, open to suggestion, by the media, believing they're film stars themselves, and that nobody else should have more money than them. There's a ruder hostility to it now, sneaky and effete even. Someone else always has to be wrong and not them. Spoilt little pricks.
Love your out of town videos. I live in South Africa and I am a proudly paid subscriber to you and Auditing Britain. Its like touring the UK on my PC from South Africa. Love you content!
@@CharlesVeitch funny how you talk about neo bolshevism near the sunny waters when the king of gulags himself 'Karl Marx' holidayed in southport for its therapeutic waters for his gout problem and another posthumous visitor in Napoleon 2 used the glass covered walkways he saw on Lord street and instituted this architectural idea in his massive rebuild of Paris! how the mighty have fallen!Even the fairground was bought out by blackpools owners who then commenced to strip out all the rollercoasters and logflume etc the big hotel by the promenade I stayed in 3 years ago and was very nice in summer and the old grecian columned building across the road was the spa very nice also!post covid only a distant memory now! an old friend of mine lives in Southport , he sold his house in Cheshunt (Hertfordshire)and bought a 5 bed house in Southport and hes living on the change
My old home town!! The Victoria used to be called The Cumberland Hotel, my Dad used to own it. Fantastic memories re-lived with your video. Thank you Charlie.
All power to that guy, collecting of beach coal was so popular in earlier times so am glad to see it is still going, well done man for your initiative!
Southport was a lovely town in the 1950’s and 60’s. The Prince of Wales was a top class hotel, which many a first division team stayed in before playing Everton or Liverpool. Lord Street was a very upper class shopping experience at one time. These days it’s full of charity shops. Saturday night use to be a good night, especially The Kingsway. Not a place I would recommend visiting.
I used to go as a teenager to the Flower Show, but I was more interested in eyeing the local talent, of which there seemed plenty. The town was always well kept and tidy. Haven't been back since.
@AlexM-ui8me Not done anything with Manhattans (aka The Colosseum) have they. One of the better (but quite small) Victorian buildings, that looks a bit ancient Greek.
@@vanpallandt5799 Because it's rather foolish to approach a man with a camera only to start mouthing off about 'not wanting to be filmed' when he wasn't breaking any law in the first place. Just move on and avoid it instead of actually provoking a scenario. It reeks of stupidity, that's all I'm saying. Nobody really likes being filmed without said permission but in public it's pointless causing a scene unless you actually want to cause a scene which most of these people seem to do.
Last time I found myself Southport it was 3am in the morning after a punishment run from Altcar camp carrying 2 Jerry cans full of water a rifle and full fighting order. I genuinely wanted to die that night.
Southport is a mix of the genteel and the grubby; It has a wealthier elderly population, retirees from Manchester, Liverpool and the Lancashire towns, with a large number of care and nursing homes, together with some elements that have migrated from Liverpool, which is not far. Lord Street, the main shopping road, was a very upmarket arcade type place back in the day, with grand hotels and cafes. It's a shadow of its former self. The ugly Promenade is a sea wall. Even though the tide goes out seemingly for miles, high tide and storm surge used to flood the sea front. Scary to drive on the Marine Parade when it's under water and you can't see the edge.
@@terencejay8845 Interesting info. Sometimes I wonder if youtube will remain in 100 years. Whether people in 100 years will watch these videos to see what things were like. How amazing would it be if we had 100 years of videos like these, so we can actually go back and see how things were, first hand so to speak. There's something special about it. The footage from the early 20th century is alright but it doesn't compare to these videos we have.
@@dlions9068 My favourite YT video is the recording from a tram car; 'San Francisco, a Trip down Market Street, April 14, 1906'. Interesting to see the random hustle and bustle just before the earthquake flattened it.
@@terencejay8845 I've seen that one. I liked that one too. Amazing how long that road was. When you've seen that video it's sad to see the photos of it in ruins. Old footage is great.
Nice place Southport in summer, holds a lot of memories for me, living there with my mum in 93' for two years, then returned in 2004, just a lot of stuck up leftys around the place, ignore them and it's a lovely place really. Top video Charlie keep them up 👍👍
I can remember going out in Zurich in the evening. One of the cobbled streets had christmas lights up. Simple lights, just strings of hanging lights. The snow had started falling, and about an inch on the ground, just me, no one else. No sound, not even foot steps because of the snow. Absolutely magical.
Yes its beautiful , on a football pitch in town one morning , I walked across a field the whole field was covered with cobwebs in dew glistening in the early morning light , the light was defused into all the colours of the rainbow , morning can be the best part of the day 😃
@@alisonhilll4317 Here's an afternoon one. Summer's day in the evening when the shadows are getting long. I've been flying in a glider when I'm doing a long final glide to a finish. With a bit of a tailwind, you're doing 80 mph as an example. It quite, you've glass all arround and the landscape rolls underneath you. It's completely different from looking out of a side window on of a plane. You've got the shadows from trees, buildings. Even some smoke from BBQs etc. Then with even gentle rolling hills you get that variation in the green plus the shadows. The Jerusalem, England's green and pleasant land is just there.
I well remember falling asleep in a bar on lord st and when I awoke it was dark outside. So began the nightmare of walking home and getting lost around parbold, mawdesly sic.
Parts of Southport cling to what it once was and the rest is so depressingly familiar. It always smelt of fresh paint, civic pride and Horlicks. Now there is the not so faint whiff of desperation.
@@smithereensloccomotives678 says the person commenting 😆 you just watched or you wouldnt be here? ..Thought there was better things to do for you sir?
@@Nickle314 But local Yokels rarely stick to their one street & have a tendency to wander around, stinking up even the "nicest" of streets. Best to avoid whole towns/area in general really.
Completely wrong, tbh Southport is pretty nice, it is a decent seaside town, especially compared to places like Blackpool that have just turned into a cesspool over the last 20 years. I like Charlie’s videos, but he looks for the worst in every place he goes, when in reality the good far outweighs the bad.
@@Meansnare Spot on! You have a fabulous choice of different areas but lets face it if you don't hold the punters interest with some (usually) shocking or disappointing facts they will choose another site. We love going to Southport, a town that has seen many disasters, take overs, been messed on several times, had its county changed to a much less desirable one but still weather the storm. Good on you little town, you have much to be proud of and so much diversity. By the way lots of the closed up places are being refurbed or demolished!!
Charles - I know Southport well - it's great for a day out and it's exactly as you show and describe it. So I enjoyed your tour and commentary. Very funny. Thanks - Tim
Sefton council have ruined Southport, I know I live there. They sold the sand off to Rainfords for 5p a load for a 60 ton quarry truck load , the sand off the beach was glacial till deposited from a glacia 15,000 years ago. They also allowed the RSPB to plant an invasive species of grass on the beach in order to make the place unviable. We need to make Southport great again!
I didn't know it was the RSPB who planted the grass in the first place. True it is bird habitat. I'm surprised they didn't do much with the old Rainfords site, at Marshside. They've had it since 2006, I think.
@@meganjb10you can tell as many lies as you want but we've all seen videos of the RSPB and the council planting the grass and also I remember seeing the signs on our beaches forbidding ball games and BBQs in the early 200"s. Are you denying that the sand wasn't mined from the Whitehorse bank and that the government didn't intervene to halt it? The marshes stopped at the sand factory and the rest was sand. They planted an invasive species of grass to take over the beach apparently for carbon capture which is totally insane as it releases methane which is a much more potent green house gas than carbon dioxide. The beach was a glacial deposit from 15,000 years ago and it remained a beach throughout all the natural climate changes, during heating and cooling cycles!
A nice tour CV. But when visited out of season, seaside resorts always seem more subdued than other towns. The seashells reminded me of the opening verses of one of my favourite songs by Crosby, Stills&Nash. The Lee Shore All along the lee shore Shells lie scattered in the sand Winking up like shining eyes at me From the sea Here is one like sunrise It's older than you know It's still just lying there, where some careless wave Forgot it long ago
Southport always reminds me of a mini Blackpool but more classy. It's looking a bit sad with all the abandoned buildings. You need to take a trip to Rhyl soon.
16:24 The consecutive lockdowns screwed them small businesses over, they were perhaps struggling but the lockdowns were the nail in the coffin. The same happened to my favourite diner in New york
When people come up and say why you're filming me why don't you turn it Around And say go away I don't want you in my film or why are you Going in front of my camera Without my premission. I'll bet they don't have a answer or they will be stunned Don't know what to do
A good friend grew up in the house which belonged to the last British hangman. His name escapes me, but he hung some Nazi war criminals and a famous serial killer. Nearby there's a house shaped like a can -which is a Southport landmark.
Poor Southport, it’s probably got worse since.. The theatre used to be a major attraction for the town, it’s a crime how the the council abandoned it during the lockdown. It must be having a massive knock on effect, closed hotels & supporting jobs..
You should be VERY chuffed that someone from the land of the Rugby World Cup champs watches your videos mate. Oh, and by the way: your video the other day about Chester was a truly beautiful one Charles. Damn, what a cool looking place ... and I was fascinated by the history of the place. Anyway, cheers from South Africa mate!
Lots of it was, still is! Southport is a very diverse town and highly recommend the author of site visits Hillside (station right next to a pleasant walking area), stunning houses including one called the 'Round House which is literally just that, opposite an open area by the golf course, walk the other way to a small and pleasant area of shops, walk back to the station via the small pine woods area, that is yet another part of the town folk forget, just as they forget Ainsdale beach which is beautiful and Churchtown and Botanic Gardens. We love our days out in the area.
Carry on walking past the Waterfront and you come across Britain's third smallest pub. I used to call in for a pie and pint. Pint was good and the dog didn't complain about the pie.
As an actual not biologist of any kind, to see that much dead shell fish makes one wonder if there has been some kind of icky situation off sea to cause this
Yeah, there been piles of clean empty shells, especially razor shells, for years. Nearer Birkdale too, like where Henry Segrave broke the land speed record in nineteen twenty something. Might just be a gradual thing, when the molluscs die.
I finally bought something from Amazon last year, after waiting for over 15 years to buy anything online (I don't trust online purchasing or support it) and within an hour I had hundreds of pounds stolen from my bank account. I called up the bank and Amazon but neither seemed shocked or even apologetic. They refunded me immediately but since then I wont buy anything online ever again in my life.
@@swally4704 Really. I bought an electric scooter innertube for £15, and then started to get messages from my bank saying £50 has been withdrawn, £150, £100, ect. All within an hour. When I called up Amazon they apparently understood, didn't question it, refunded me and didn't investigate. This tells me it's a multi billion dollar business. Maybe it's my fault for having malware on my PC? Who knows? All I know is, I wont be using online purchasing again. No chance.
@@MrAsh1989 I feel the same i still haven't purchased anything i am scared to do it, i am not brilliant on the computer so its worrying for someone as dull as me 😀
Note the rail lines on the pier, a train used to run the length of it, my mate crashed it driving it stoned. Lord st is supposedly modeled on the Champs Elysees, allegedly!
The pier was rebuilt about 20 years ago. It used i have a different sort of train. It was quick, open air and you couldn't walk on the track. That ran until it looked like it couldn't run. Similar to one or two roller coasters, at Pleasureland, like the Cyclone.
Other way round as Napoleon 2 on a visit to UK saw Lord street and remodelled Paris with lots of glass covered boulevards all uniform which is what makes Paris so walkable in the rain!
@@therespectedlex9794One open air central carriage, two closed carriages, interchangeable, tons better than the huge thing they replaced it with that ran down the centre of pier instead of on the side as the vintage one that was called 'Silver Belle' wonder who got that hey?? Southport has had the guts ripped out of it and folk should be praising the small town that keeps going, trying its best with tons of volunteers doing what council workers used to do. Heartbreaking. New roller coaster next year, its is massive!! Supposedly new theatre too, all of that is being demolished, however the council have had it fenced off for at least 18months so who knows when it will be completed!?
I have stopped a few times in Southport had some nice times. Nice place for a drink is Bistrot Pierre and also Peaky Blinders too. Its a bit quite place well against side of Liverpool. My friend lives in Magul we used to go a few times to Southport and Liverpool before lockdown, its a shame things closing down.
Shrewsbury is waiting for you Charlie. Only an hour and a bit away by train. Population as of 2022 is around 80k the town and 108k the urban. Its historic, probably right up their with Chester. Castle, Roman Walls, river loop, world's first skycraper(Ditherington Flax Mill), worlds tallest single doric column and all the Charles Darwin stuff with added Quantum Leap sculpture to boot. Oh and Percy Throwers famous The dingle garden in the quarry. The place will keep you busy and along with everywhere else there's a few dodgy people and buildings. 🤣
And as for the kid, I have to stick up for him , he must of heard the tale end of what he said to this woman and tried to do the right thing , in turn charlie gave him abuse , when you shout "asshole " to woman in the middle of the street it can cause unwanted attention ! so ......GOOD ON YOU KID
I grew up in Southport in the 50's and 60's, when it was a beautiful Victorian seaside resort, left the town and returned about 10 years ago, jeez what a s*** hole. It made me almost cry!
Places look a lot different on warm sunny days, Charlies always looking for the negative in environmental and human conditions, I think deep inside Charlie is a very angry man.
Absolutely definitely got a cross to bear, hesitated to look at this site as have seen another one of his and it was just as negative. Southport has just had the worst crime incident of its life and we have already seen the 'vultures' who attack the town out with their cameras! What do these people get out of it??
Very similar to Blackpool this. Old dilapidated Hotel’s from when tourism was booming and sadly majority been turned into bedsits or immigration centres.
Check out the coast there. Glorious sand dunes, red (yes red) squirrels and natterjack toads on the Formby coast. Plus, if your a venturer - The debris of Liverpool ornate architecture blown to bits in ww2 can be found there. Worth a look x
If you went over the Mersey gateway bridge at any point, just to let you know there's a £2 toll each way you can pay it online if you need to within 24 hours, I got a ticket in the post (twice) once on the way and once on the way home for going to Southport and staying in that Travel lodge at the start of your video, because I didn't know about it.
Yep, we got stung with that as well, pure robbery as we had no idea about the tolls or anything, we had always used the 'old bridge'. There was no indication of how to pay either on the bridge or even online when we got home plus its just a very short time they give you to pay, hours literally so you get done!!
