It had been a while since I've connected through Oakland, CA. Our approach into the Bay area was another sobering experience as visibility was very poor due to lingering smoke from nearby wildfires and the airport was an absolute ghost town. Yet this approach and landing was special. After a few minutes of final I realized the landscape looked different compared to what I was used to when arriving into Oakland. I never saw water out the right side windows and I began wondering if we were in fact landing at OAK. It was only right after touching down when I checked my maps that I realized we landed on the other side of the airport on runway 28L as opposed to rwy 30 which is the norm for most commercial traffic. After landing we had to backtaxi on the runway to exit at the approach end and begin making the trek across the airfield. It was a LONG taxi to the terminal but a fun arrival nonetheless.

Great video. I recently came in on a Southwest flight that landed on 10R at night from the north due to extreme wind from the southeast. It is definitely a strange experience to see different light patterns on the ground on both sides of the airplane compared to the normal approach to the main runway 12/30.

its very different indeed! The only other time I was confused regarding our whereabouts was going into SJC on 12R. just the difference in perspective of the surrounding terrain really threw me off.

Wow great video!! I didn't even realize those runways could handle commercial aircraft.

I have flown cross-country four times in the past few years, and three of those four times I flew out of OAK. I enjoyed watching this video by the way.

Nice video. And yes, a very unusual approach into 28L (for large commercial traffic, that is). I too had the same thoughts as you on finals, i.e. that doesn't look like the normal Oakland approach! Then I read your narrative, and checked Google Maps!

Wow, how rare is this! I wonder why the 28s were used?

@@AListFlierKris Thanks for the detail explanation! I didn't realize runway 30 was closed for maintenance. Sorry to hear about the long wait to the terminal. I just took a look at the airport diagram and its a bit of a trek to get the terminals from the north fields.

Typically maintenance on the main runway is scheduled for Sunday-Monday overnights when there's no cargo. Between April and September with traffic low due to Covid, that maintenance period was changed to daytime hours. 737s have no problem with 28L's 6200 feet, and there are usually no cargo heavies Monday mornings. Air carrier activity on 28L isn't all that uncommon, but for whatever reason there are very few videos posted up. I always enjoy seeing them!

Let me ask it this way? Do the planes in Oakland ever land and take off in opposite formations? The best landings and take off that I’ve ever seen at San Francisco over across 101 over Millbrae. It’s not very common at all you may only see it twice a year. I love it

If I may chime in, reverse ops usually happens at all 3 Bay Area Airports when weather systems with a low pressure cell comes in with counterclock wise flow resulting in winds coming from the south or southeast. As for planes landing on the 1s at SFO, that is super super rare with winds coming from the east or north east. I was able to capture it early Feb this year! Winds were just gusting and howling and it was a spectacular sight to see with planes just screaming over the Bart station parking lot in Millbrae.

I was on a VS 747-200, almost 30 years ago, coming in from LHR. We landed across 101, where the Millbrae Bart station is now. I thought I was going to be sick. The winds were bad. Which is also, very rare. But I have seen the formation you are talking about as well. I lived in SJC for over 30 years and was always at SFO. I think I have seen that take off in the formation over Millbrae less than 10 times, and land over Millbrae about the same amount. Both very rare and a spotters dream. FYI my son and I were flying to Nashville the day of the Asiana crash. We left about an hour before. I have hundreds of pics taken from the Marriott hotel parking lot. I am glad I missed that, we were out there every weekend.

Do they ever land from north to south like SFO does? You know like over 980? Going to 880 if I remember my freeways correctly

Kris Raye oh wow, did you guys take off on the same runway you landed? I looked at Flightradar24 and it looked like that was the operations going on at the time

Why didn’t u fly over the water? Is that a different landing direction?

So they basically land on the runways that are on the right side of the terminal, not on the left side correct? Because the left side is the main runway. I’m sorry I don’t know the numbers. When I used to live in the Bay Area I heard that the runways on the right side, where you’re seeing the general aviation wise, those are the runways where the private jets and the Otis Spunkmeyer DC3 would takeoff correct? I wonder why this flight will land there?
