For anyone wondering about the red box on the chart at the end it is talking about the fuse plugs in the wheels. If those get any hotter they will blow out and the tires will deflate and the plane would then not be able to taxi at all. The plugs are meant to come out instead of the tires exploding and causing a bunch of damage.

No flap landings aren't a big deal except for hot brakes. It's one of the maneuvers practiced in the Sim every year. Most airliners and private jets I've flown land really nice no-flap. I had a Embraer Phenom 300 lose flap control because of a computer glitch. We were enroute to COS which has a 13,500 ft runway, literally long enough for the Space Shuttle. So once we confirmed the flaps didn't work we just ran the checklist and landed. I let it roll about 10,000 ft then we pulled off the runway and had the fire dept scan our brakes with a thermal sensor, they were fine which is what I expected since I barely used them on such a long runway.

@@spagoz2136 Correct. I barely tapped them to make sure they worked then just let 'er roll. I cleared onto a high speed taxiway 10,000ft down. Been there. The airport in Chihuahua Mexico, as well as the entire city, sits in an ancient and dormant volcano. The outer ridge circles the city. As soon as the plane clears one side, the pilot has to get wheels down ASAP and the brakes come on. The 737-400 we were on is about the largest aircraft that can operate in and out of there. We rode the brakes so hard that when we finally came to a stop, they were locked up. After about 45 minutes of sitting there, they rolled out the air stairs and a bus and we departed right there in the runway. It was surreal

I am sure they were in contact with their dispatcher on this. My inclination would have been to land on 28R, given that it's a little longer - 28R LDA 11236' Vs. 28L LDA 10275', so an extra 1000 feet or so. Maybe that has changed since I retired. At the very least I don't think I'd have exited at Echo off of 28L. That gives up a lot of runway, heats up the brakes more (probably Max autobrakes Vs. 1 or 2, and if you choose manual braking, on a long runway, you could ease the heating more. With both reversers at the detent, it's pretty close to Autobrakes 2 level of deceleration - without using them.), and because of congestion, makes it harder to find a place to sit. Tell Tower/ARFF your plan to land on 28R, exit at Uniform, clear the runway and get chocked. They can be there waiting for you. Let maintenance know you may need them out there if you blow the plugs. This isn't a super big deal, but might as well stack the deck in your favor.

Brake energy chart shows max dissipation at 93 million ftlbs. An astonishing number to be sure. But. Consider that 93 million ftlbs is only about a THIRD of the muzzle energy of a single gun on an Iowa class battleship. If one were to fire at a landing 737 and were somehow able to impart all the projectile force to the aircraft evenly, it would not just stop it in mid-air, but it would blast it backwards at nearly twice the speed it was originally going. @kaefermichaify
@kaefermichaify 3 года назад
And 40 knots more gives a hell lot more kinetic energy for the brakes: 1/2 x m x v² 140 knots is 70metres/sec. 180 knots is 90metres/sec. If we assume 40 Tons for the plane we get: Ekin = 0,5 x 40.000 x 70 x 70 = 98 Megajoule at 140knots. At 180 knots: 0,5 x 40.000 x 90 x 90 = 162 Megajoule. So that is 64 MJ more or with other words 60 percent more. If we assume that the spoilers and reverse are inop, the brakes would also have to Cover this. And if you have to approach the main gear (e.g. fire brigade if the brakes caught on fire) you approach them from the front or the back. The reason is that the fuse plugs are on the side of the tyres and will blow out sideways, so the safest and only way to approach them is from the front or back.

738 driver here. (Not southwest) The performance inflight section of the QRH (‘the good book’ when we’re in flight) gives you a stopping distance that, if significantly less than the available runway, I don’t see in theory why you couldn’t use the touchdown markers normally and try and grease it on. In practice though, that thing will have floated like anything without the drag from the flaps, and I’d have ‘landed positively’ to make sure I’ve got plenty of distance at the end. Flaps up VREF will be roughly 210kt compared to F30 VREF of more like 140kt. Unless the winds are mega you can get it comfortably within 5kts of target for the whole approach though, just slightly more nose high for a flapless approach. Also I think if I was in the fuse plug melt zone for the tires I’d have just vacated and got it chocked. Can’t imagine the taxi ride to company HQ to explain why the tires burst and one of the wheels isn’t round because I taxied unnecessarily. Maybe they called ops or something for approval. Either way, RT was nicely handled.
@pomerau
@pomerau 3 года назад
@@johntankertson110 Brilliant also. That's seems a jump in speed, but if you expect the float and get it on hard with enough runway, and all other things being in your favour, I guess how you get it stopped even if you have to mullah the brakes and risk damage is the easier final stage. I presume spoilers were not necessarily affected by the same fault issue, nor reversers. @@pomerau yeah, if the flaps detect that one side is out a little more than the other at any point they freeze and don’t move again, to stop asymmetric flap ruining your day. The hydraulics are still working, so spoilers and reverses should be unaffected. And yeah, if the book says you’ll stop in that distance, that should be where you’ll stop. But yeah, in QRH we trust. 🙏

@randc47

The brakes can catch fire, which is why they often have fire trucks dispatched upon landing. You really don’t want that to occur next to the gate/terminal. Hot brakes also don’t work well, which is why it’s instructed to chock the wheels off of the runway until they cool. Don’t want to have a plane taxiing around that can’t stop.
@AdamLaMore
@AdamLaMore 3 года назад
Better to deal with fire and evacuation on an open taxiway rather than next to the gate where you have restricted access for fire trucks and you also have fuel storage and a building that could catch fire too.
@ginacalabrese3869
@ginacalabrese3869 3 года назад
If you read the red box on the chart at the end it is talking about the fuse plugs in the wheels. If those get any hotter they will blow out and the tires will deflate and the plane would then not be able to taxi at all. The plugs are meant to come out instead of the tires exploding and causing a bunch of damage.
