A Southwest Airlines Boeing B737 performing flight to Austin International was landing on runway 17R when the pilots spotted a person on the runway and tried to avoid the individual.
However the left engine hit the man causing fatal injuries.
Airport Authorities claimed the man was not dressed like an airport worker and did not have any identification on him.

Nah the pilot will be pissed that they are stuck in Austin....but worrying about stupid people is a waste of energy. Ive seen a few fatalities in skydiving, only one bothered me ...a student jumper. The rest all had over 1000 jumps and generally knew the risks. The pilot might be bnbothered if he thinks there was something he could have done differently. Very doubtful in this case.

Rideshare driver here: Just started driving again this week. Only doing airport rides since I live right there and love planes. I face my car towards 17R while I wait for rides and will usually work on some school. Can’t see whole runway but you can see most of the approach and usually the smoke ride up after tires touchdown. I remember seeing this plane land and then thought I heard someone slam a car door. Saw the go around and thought that was off since it’s so slow. Didn’t think anything of it. Picked up a person from that flight and she said they hit something but I didn’t believe her honestly. Thought maybe there was just a crosswind and some turbulence. I learned after I dropped her off what happened. Victor, you are so fast with these - seriously impressed. RIP to the guy. These are strange times.

While it's not confirmed yet, it looks like it was likely suicide. I understand that people can be going through some rough times and decide that they need to end it, it sucks, and no one should have to go through that, but killing yourself in a way that gets others involved is just a douche move. Jumping in front of a car/train/plane, you're going to ruin their day and possibly their life, it's hard to overcome the thoughts that you may have killed someone, even if you know you couldn't do anything to stop it.

Hitting a person is not different than hitting a deer, you do not have time to react, they were touching down their job was to stay on the center line of the runway and under control. Many people swerve to miss deer or other animals while driving and leave the roadway, once you do that your chances of death go up ten fold or more. Why this person (an adult remember) was on the runway doesn't matter, they choose to endanger the lives of potentially hundreds of lives thankfully there was only one fatality, the crew did a great job handling the situation..
@vbscript2
@vbscript2 4 года назад
I would also add that 3,000 lb cars at 30-70 mph are much easier to swerve in than 130,000 lb 737s at 140 mph, which also have much higher CoG and tires that are not meant for steering above taxi speeds on the ground. The car also doesn't have wings filled with fuel that stick out 59 ft from the centerline on each side that risk hitting the ground when swerving.

"Hitting a person is not different than hitting a deer". Uh, yeah, one is a deer and the other is a fellow human being. It's impossible to overstate how different those things are, in particular to a driver or a pilot. One is sad, the other is something you'll bear for the rest of your life. Your original comment is at best ignorant.

I had a neighbor (BNSF engineer) who had hit several cars in his career with multiple fatalities. He said they have a program that they have to go through after each indident. Story was this was one of Austin's new homeless residents who, for whatever reason, wandered onto the runway. Not sure if that has stood up thru investigation, but it was the story in the days following. And YES, the pilots have to disclose all class A mishaps they are involved with, fault or no fault. Just like a truck driver or cop, if you are in an accident that damages property and involves loss of life there WILL be an investigation and it WILL follow your record forever.

Kind of odd hearing a pilot being asked to take down a phone number that doesn't involve violating some instruction from ATC. The pilots, meanwhile, now know what it's like when a locomotive crew has to deal with a fatal injury involving a trespasser or someone illegally crossing in front of a train.

It boils down to this, fear and panic cost lives. The pilot of United 811 summed it up best, while trying to land a horribly damaged 747, with a huge hole in the side and 2 engines gone. He recalled that at some point in it all he remembered thinking how upset his daughter would be if he didn't come home, but concluded he can think about that latter he had a job to do right now. If he had allowed himself to dwell on things like that that aircraft likely would be at the bottom of the Pacific right now, instead it returned to Hawaii and made a safe landing because of his level headed decision making.

@anthonyvallillo422
@anthonyvallillo422 4 года назад
I very much doubt the pilots "witnessed" anything other than the Captain perhaps being aware of a momentary blur off his left side. From the pilot seat of just about any airliner you cannot even see the wingtip, let alone the engine, which is why we had to go back and look out a passenger window if we ever wanted to actually check for damage, etc. They might have felt a bump, but the only people who were in a position to actually see anything as it happened were any passengers who happened to be sitting by a left side window (which happened to have the shade up - many do not) . There was no provision for compensation at the airline I worked for in this kind of situation, although there have been cases in the past where a special compensation was made after a particularly brilliant piece of piloting - the only such incident I know of was mentioned in one of Robert Serling's non-fiction books about aviation safety and occurred way back in the 50's or early 60's. There have been other cases which obviously warranted a gesture of that sort - miracle on the Hudson comes to mind - but I don't know if anything was forthcoming from the airline itself.

As the engine's inlet cowl is curved it must've been another hit for the head and the shoulder. I had a cokehead step in front of my car going 30, in darkness, and I had to lock up (no anti-lock) and skid violently to a stop, just short of her. The cokehead didn't even flinch. Probably even took $100 of life off my tires even, but the bigger point is my own needless trauma, which I would have carried through life, and only by the luck of superhuman reflexes as my mind first went to denial, and my extreme physical response to locking it up, did I prevent a permanent horror for myself -- and for her. Didn't even flinch. She probably didn't live another two weeks anyway for numerous reasons, her and the cokeheads hanging around cars parked in the road in the night; and I'm sorry to say, that we're better off if that happened -- hopefully not scarring innocent passerbys before they went to heaven.

Years ago, while working at Toronto (YYZ) we received a weird call from the tower at 5 am. Two people were walking down the middle of the active runway, so we raced out and grabbed them. They were two skinheads that had gotten stoned and decided that they wanted to look at airplanes, so they climbed over the fences. They were surprisingly mellow, which was lucky, as it was the last hour of our last night shift, and we were exhausted. One of them turned out to be wanted for murder in Montreal, where he’d kicked a guy to death. Weird day. Great channnel!

If he stopped on the taxiway instead of going all the way to the gate as directed then he was suspicious and wanted to consider the issue first at least. It doesn't sound like he knew he hit anyone or he would have likely called the emergency trucks out to take a look. I doubt he could have seen the damage from his vantage point and once he saw the engine gauges were normal then he felt comfortable continuing the taxi. Otherwise he would have shut that engine down immediately.

Not as bad as you'd think. The skin is pretty good at keeping stuff inside for the most part. I've had people who jumped from 30 stories up who looked pretty normal and had a guy who was crushed by a large forklift -- never would have guessed because he looked relatively uninjured. If this guy was pulled into the turbines then, yes, you'd be right. It'd be really gross.
