I saw in a previous video you covered the Milwaukee 9" 7in1 tool but I previously bought the 7.75" 6in1 tool at HomeDepot on a whim. I really like the smaller size but the narrow pliers would make it hard to twist wires. Problem solved, just grind down the nose of the pliers to make a more blunt tip. Now you can grab a few wires for twisting in a more compact size and few dollars less.

Looks like a tremendously useful tool. Love the speed one can gain with getting rid of the insulation without damaging the conductors and I love the loop hole so that perfect loops can be made 100% of the time. A great tool that all apprentices SHOULD have , IMO. This tool would aid an apprentice in quality and speed of their work and most importantly , keep them from constantly changing tools for different functions. After all , you add up the seconds and minutes wasted in just one year , just from changing pliers , adds up to a surprising amount of non productive hours. Time is money , efficiency is the name of the game. Finally , ergonomically designed handles are a must. Lots of us have the internal hand injuries from years of using poorly designed tools. Let's help the younger men and women avoid this. Love the tool.

Well said! It really is a nice tool, and at a great price point. The ergonomics and handles remind me of the Klein Kwik-Kurve, which I really like. I would drill out the latch, but that's a small point and just a preference. As a contractor I really stress to apprentices to not nick the wire insulation. These pliers give the perfect scoring on the sheathing for 14/2 and 12/2. Thanks!

Bill - I bought this tool for several reasons based on your review, but first for it's ability to cut screws. My daughter has two rooms with metal decora plates on which the screws were too long and the plates were just loose enough to be annoying. I just trimmed the screws down to size and the plates now fit tight and straight, no jiggle, no wiggle. Nice tool for the money. Thanks!

I think they should come up with a different design for a latch if they are going to have a latch. That design just doesn't work for some of us. Easy enough to drill them out though. Other than that I love the pliers. Thanks!

Yes, Southwire makes very nice tools. I've ordered another combo tool from Southwire that I'm going to make a report on as well. I have a hunch that is is going to have to go up against the new Knipex forged pliers in a video contest. :) Thanks Gary!

Good vid, as always! I'll never use these because I've seen toooooooo many wire insulations nicked and ended up causing different issues after trim out. Just as u said ....just score the jacket, however, this can't be controlled with everyone using it. I think,under a slow paced and controlled application, it could work. Piece of mind for me though, still using my utility knife.

I've had the Klein version for years and they are extremely helpful. I wonder if they'll do the version Klein makes that removes sheathing from 14/3 and 12/3. I'll never understand how that diamond shape strips the round 14/3 and 12/3 cable without nicking wires, but it works well. They also made a bent version that fits inside a box to strip 14/2, but I never tried them.

Bill, I agree with you about the latch; I don't like them either. But overall this looks very good and is specific to Southwire's 14 and 12 gauge wire products, which I use almost exclusively. I like the way it scores Romex cladding; I have a couple of tools that date way back and, while they work, I never felt comfortable using them compared to the features that this demonstrates. Thanks for your great videos.

so all that specialty romex sheathing stripper, and you still have to mess around with "breaking"? I just use the cutting part of regular strippers - gently - because they have the right kind of sharpness.

One thing to look at might to indicate how short a screw can be cut. This tool looks pretty thick in the screw cutter area and may not be able to cut a 6-32 cover plate screw short enough for a scoreless wall plate.

Good point, thanks. Those little screws are really short!

the curved handle makes it awkward to flip the tool to get the latch out of the way. also, when you're testing the sheathing stripper, did you close the tool all the way to see if you would accidentally nick the wire?

I'll have to check on that.

You have tens of thousands loyal subscribers and I am sure a lot want kmow what you would do to wire a new house, e.g. Al or Cu entrance cable, 2 or 400 amp, panel box, 12-2 only?, boxes with mudplates, connectors, subpanels, wall or panel GFI's, AGFI's, receptacle type, switch type, etc. Assume it were to be your home.

@Sparky Channel. Thanks Bill for the thorough review of these Southwire Combo pliers. Thanks also for commenting on how well the strippers do or don't nick wires when using. It's nice that I can use these and not have to worry about nicking wires which can weaken the conductors. BTW. Southwire doesn't say you can use then for reaming EMT conduit. Will they ream in a pinch? Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
@SparkyChannel
@SparkyChannel 3 года назад
My pleasure, thanks! These pliers would ream conduit as well as any pliers. I'm not a big fan of reaming with any pliers though as they don't do that great of a job. I would rather use an actual reamer. You guys stay safe as well!
@ccadama
@ccadama 3 года назад
@@SparkyChannel Thanks Bill. I agree that a purpose built reamer will do a better job of reaming and I want to do the job right. But there'll be people that will say it's good enough and probably will do a good enough job. Thanks again.

Hi Bill from Sparky Channel Great review today. Always look forward to what’s coming next on your channel. Looks like a great tool. I have a couple similar old craftsman ones for both 2 and 3 wire romex still working great. But this looks good should something ever happen to them, I don’t think craftsman makes them anymore. Was such a great brand at one time. Thanks for another great video

Craftsman was purchased by Stanley Back and Decker, which also owns DeWalt. But Craftsman was great back in the days of Sears! Thanks, I really like this tool. I also bought the new Knipex, so I'll be making a review about that. Take care Jeff!

@@SparkyChannel I always favored Craftsman as my father did, I still have tools from him from the 1950’s still going strong, but so disappointed in what Sears eventually did to the quality. Hopefully with the new ownership, Craftsman will grow with lots of new professional tools one day. The quality seems quite good again with what they do make now, but I don’t buy Craftsman from Sears anymore as it’s still the same junk. Thanks for a great channel.

This is a great idea for a special purpose tool, however it is fundamentally flawed because what happens when you have 14/3 or 12/3, as you often will?

@Ryker There's plenty of 14/3 and 12/3 in residential....I would say tons actually...
@mr.g937
@mr.g937 3 года назад
@Ryker How many 3 way switches do you have in your house? I would say typical house has 2-3 or so of them. How many times does your house have switched outlets with power running to the switch from the outlet? Probably fairly common too. How many ceiling fans with light kits do you have? Here in Florida every bedroom and even living room + ktichen has a ceiling fan with a light kit.
@SparkyChannel
@SparkyChannel 3 года назад
You make a good point. I would not use this tool on 12/3 or 14/3. I would just lightly score the sheathing for 8" or whatever is needed, then tear the sheathing, then cut it with diagonal pliers. It's super important to not nick the wire insulation.
