One hockey game meant everything to many people, and THAT'S what mattered. All hockey games after that meant NOTHING until the collapse of the CCCP.

Maybe then you will understand that communist states actually do use the Olympics as a nationalist propaganda machine, and control every aspect of players lives from a very young age. Part of that control is the instruction of how to handle PR, specifically to downplay losses as either unfair, or as if those particular losses weren’t a big deal because it’s “just a game.” This same fear persists and motivates the players to this day. Do you know what would happen if they broke character?
