Buran was the space shuttle developed by the Soviet Union with its first and only launch on November 15, 1988. The mission included only two Earth orbits and was unmanned.
Welcome to the Shuttlesource space shuttle video archive highlighting rare and exclusive video celebrating the program's 30-year history. Created for shuttle enthusiasts, historians or video creators, this project seeks to preserve and release original shuttle mission video for the historical record.
Started in 2003 after the Columbia accident, I began the collection as a simple quest to watch some of the earlier program mission video which at that time was simply not available on the internet. With the help of private enthusiasts and NASA, I have now amassed a collection of over 2,000 hours covering every shuttle mission. Over time, this full collection is slowly being converted to a digital format and released.
Thanks to all who have contributed your old and beaten VHS tapes and for those still with tapes sitting in a box please reach out.
Enjoy the videos!

"Saturday's maiden shuttle flight will be as historically significant as the Soviet's first space satellite Sputnik" That didn't age well.

Just skip to 32 minutes unless you want to see about 6 different TV news companies repeat the same story of “When Buran is going to launch!”.

So where's the launch? I see the ignition but never saw the vehicle clear the tower. Is that the best footage they've got?

The space version, of the russian Concordski! Because they always designed unique aircraft/spacecraft! Looks like they took the four jet engines off the back! Smart. And we know it's just better than the Space Shuttle, because their propaganda said so! had to joke a little. But, thanks for the video and your hard work. It was very interesting. New sub! Please don't think I was mocking anyone. Joking about things, is one thing. Insulting people is another, and no thanks to that!

I wish there was more info on the CIA opertion that Fed false design & flight data to the USSR. I have a feeling a modern equivalent is being done with Chinese aviation & space flight. They got access to f35 "files" ages ago what happened ? Same with Shangdong 003 or w.e it's called

22:00 Shuttle is better than Buran because it is nearly fully reusable only the orange fuel tank (which feeds the 3 Shuttle main engines), is expandable in the launch
@OliverMiles98
@OliverMiles98 Год назад
Counterpoint: Buran is (hypothetically) better than the Shuttle because it can lift more payload to orbit, is not an integral part of the launch system (meaning the launch vehicle can launch other things, not to mention to boosters being developed into their own), is inherently safer (due to liquid boosters as opposed to solid) and is capable of fully automated flight. As for reusability, Energiya's boosters are (once again hypothetically) recoverable (which is what the darker grey things are on the booster), just like the Shuttle. The core-stage is expandable (and it would be incredibly difficult to reuse it) but the RD-0120 engines were cheaper compared to the RS-25s.

buran is better, the stage A (four strap boosters) is reusable, and buran can launch, landing fully automatic and unmanned

There are two of these machines in an abandoned building today. The fact that they have not been put on public display, to be applauded in a flight museum, makes me think the whole programme was just Soviet propaganda and that they may not even have achieved orbit. There is video tape of the air flight but no video tape of space flight from the onboard camera.

I think it's hard to compare them due to the fact that Buran never entered operational status and only flew once. At least, the Buran was able to perform fully automatic landings.

i wouldn't really agree, the soviets diddnt use SRB's so incase of a problem then can detach it when they want and the spacecraft would be much safer. would love so hear your reasons.

Were we more advanced back then or did we just think bigger?
@TheBleuakuma
@TheBleuakuma Год назад
Neither. All propaganda. Earth not space is not at all what were told in school.
@JunoCinematics
@JunoCinematics 2 дня назад
I think it was that we thought bigger. We certainly weren’t more advanced back then. But the Soviets built Buran because they viewed the US space shuttle as an “orbital bomber”. They thought that the military would use the space shuttle a lot more to deploy spy satellites, and things to neutralize soviet forces. So they authorized Buran, but it’s lead designer wanted to keep the soviets path to the moon still open. So, as is said in the video, they designed Energia to be a separate independent rocket from Buran, and energia could lift more than 100 tons to low earth orbit. So yeah, they thought bigger back then.
