Telling the difference between a sow and boar black bear can be difficult, especially if you just want to take an average bear. If you follow the 4 steps that I outline in the video I guarantee that you won't mistake a sow for a boar. Remember if in doubt don't shoot, there is always another day!

Sows r like my gramma, small little head and a huge ass:) Very good info. My go to is sideways the front leg to paw looks like a candy cane. Skinny and curled up. Cheers.

What if you don't have barrels to compare a bear to, I can only spot and stalk. I'm going out today and everyday for the next month and a half till I find a big shooter. Long looking legs usually means a younger bear from my experience.
@rattlingjunkie
@rattlingjunkie 3 года назад
I don't have much experience with that, but I still feel one can judge bears effectively as many guides develop that skill. I'd be looking at the gait of the animal, shoulder width, size of shoulders compared to the hindquarters. And look at head characteristics even though I don't rely heavily on that here in Manitoba. I'd take all those things and add them up and if they equal big bear I'd shoot. Obviously as a bowhunter I'm getting close but would want to judge a bear before making a stalk.

Ok I like your video of the comparison in size and that’s all well and good if you have a barrel to compare it to. But my question is how do you know which is which when you have no barrel to compare it to. This is what I’m dealing with now. I don’t bear hunt. I been hinting for 40+ years and never had a bear tag. I’m an archery hunter and in those 40 years I’ve never once saw a black bear in the woods in Pa. Just a week ago I come face to face with one that come down a hill 10 yards in front of me and needless to say I almost shit myself since I hunt on the ground with a blind. Now again I never hunted bear and never once come in contact with one until a week ago. I had no idea what I was supposed to do so I just sat still and hoped it wouldn’t see me and until recently I found out you should I guess talk in a calm voice as to not startle it. Again I have no clue but all I know is it was ten yards facing me and it picked its head up and looked right at me. So much fir not startling it cuz it gave a grunt and ran back the way it came then I heard it chomping it’s teeth which I assume it is now pissed off. I don’t know if it was a sow or a boar. I just know it was big and had a big head. So now I’m in the situation that it has come back within 3 feet of my blind that I caught on a trail cam I put out to see if it was a fluke or it is hanging out there or living close to there. So now I went out and bought bear spray and a bear tag since I can hunt them during archery. I really don’t want to hunt the damn thing and I really don’t want to shoot it with my crossbow either cuz again I’m not a bear hunter and the only way I found out where to aim for was on RU-vid. So how do you know if it’s a boar or a sow when there’s no barrels in the woods and where do you aim for when it’s flat out facing you and not broadside?? I will also be carrying a .357 magnum now when I go out. I have looked into the .357 for defense against a black bear and according to these guys I’ve watched said it has enough stopping power if using full metal jackets but best best to use lead cast ammo. Well I haven’t been able to find lead cast ammo but have full metal jacket 158 gr and Winchester big bore 158 gr semi jacketed hollow points. I’m hoping I don’t need to use any of the ammo or use my crossbow but I will only if I had to so now that’s my problem. I don’t want to have to kill this thing. I’ve heard more times that they are more afraid of you than you are if them and that’s fine with me but there is always that chance that it may be having a bad day and if it would come after me I want to know how what I need to defend myself other than carrying my rifle during archery cuz I sure as hell don’t want to get mauled by a pissed off bear. Especially a mama bear with cubs but I will absolutely do what I have to do to be able to go home safe after hunting. I don’t want nothing to do with these bears and I’m kinda pissed off that it’s even there where I’ve been hunting these woods for over 30 years and never had an encounter but I’m thinking it would be pretty tough to take it down with my crossbow if it would charge me. I don’t know. I know I’m ranting but this got me flustered since I’m a deer hunter not a bear hunter. Any suggestions would be helpful.

early season the sow should be passed up, for the cubs sake, but late season yearlings will be fine without the sow.

Sows keep cubs for two years, they aren't like deer. Don't shoot sows with cubs!

Got my 11th boar last fall, so far (knock on wood) I've never mistaken a sow for a boar. I've even passed up on a couple nice bears cause I wasn't 100% on it being a boar. Even if it's acceptable in your local hunting regulations, If you enjoy bear hunting why would you ever harvest a sow? The boars of future seasons will only be there because of the sows we see today...
