@@TONYAwiththeflowers it’s not though, name me one RU-vidr who has more videos on the subject. When people don’t believe you or argue with you that it doesn’t work that’s usually a sign that yr onto something big!
i'm sure many ppl have said this already but to get more viable seeds/increase germ rate, you should let the pod dry on the stalk (and before the pod bursts if it does that). for your growing zone, i would suggest using some of the earlier flowers to increase the development time. i've never tried to collect seed and i'm just passing along info from another channel's vid. please keep us posted!!!
Just planted some dahlia seeds about 3 days ago. Heat mat and cover. The sprouted on like day one! Amazing. Giant mix from Johnny’s Seeds. Super pumped to see how they do.
That is a really super idea. I can't wait to see what comes of the seeds. This is my first year growing dahlias from tubers and from seed. I got a mixed seed pack from Johnny's and they germinated pretty well (60%ish) and I just can't wait to see what the flowers look like! Like a box of chocolates as another commenter said! You never know what you're gonna get! :) Happy growing!
I had never heard of growing dahlias from seed before your channel... But then, I really didn't know a lot about flowers in general at that point. Hahaha
I've decided to wait another month, and direct sow mine with the plastic bottle over top of each seed. This will act as a little greenhouse while they are sprouting, and the first part of growing. This way I'm hoping they won't dry out during germination, and right after. Also, they will stay warmer at night. I'm in Central Texas, zone 7b/8a, and our temps flex a lot. So the mini greenhouse method should be a safe bet! 🤞🌱🤞🌱🤞🌱🤞🌱🤞🌱🤞
I think the seed needs to be much drier before collecting. I personally have not collected dahlia seed but I do collect seed from other plants and I find when the plant still has moisture, the seeds just don't work well.
Oh my goodness! I *just* started the Dahlia seeds I got from you. So excited to see what happens with them. I will be sure to share pictures. Also have some from Floret I will be starting soon.
Darn! I missed out on your Dahlia seed sale! 😢 However, I bought some hardy annual seeds from you and sowed them in the fall and they are looking great! They survived the snow and frost! 😃
I only had a few bloom last year, but have already planted more this season. Most of the flowers that I did get were very nice. Thank you for watching! 🌱
I "winter sow" tender plants about 3-4 weeks before my last frost date. Once the plants have started to germinate, I only cover them when there's a predicted frost. It takes a little bit of extra attention, but it definitely worth it since I'm so limited for space. Hope that helps! :)
I know I already told you this, but maybe someone else in the comments has experience with this? I ordered some seeds from Eden Bros., & I'm having a good germination rate, but every time it comes time to them needing watered, the leaves are wilting and turning brown. So I sowed more seeds, & it happened again. So third time around, it happened again... I waited until the soil was like Bone dry this time, & they lasted a little longer before wilting, but nonetheless, the day after I watered- they wilted and died again. I'm wondering if it's even a watering issue, & not a disease issue, & its just a coincidence that every time I water they're dying. It starts with the seed leaves, & then the true leaves...???
Could be that the soil media isn’t loose enough. My first crop of seedlings at the beginning of this month started to look soggy and stunted (soil was dry, after watering they started damping off) I changed up my seed starting mix, the new seedling popped up within days. My current 1 week old seedlings are almost three times the size of the first sow 🤔
I'm honestly not sure if a dahlia flower will self-pollinate. I've never tried it. If it does produce seed, I would still imagine that the seeds would produce flowers that are quite a bit different than the parent plant. Good luck!
I think my original comment may have been flagged because it contained a link - it was Chelan Butte Dahlias. I haven't ordered from them before, but they do seem to have a really great selection. 🌱🌱🌱
Just an idea for sowing/germinating. Maybe try starting some in a container with a wet paper towel, if you have more, be fun to see which germinated faster. I know this ones all about seeds, I shared this on an older Dahlia video, thought you would be interested, this is taking cuttings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eR6jJ-rQv3I.html
Thanks! Maybe I'll try starting the extras in a paper towel to save time. I already have a video about taking dahlia cuttings, if anyone is interested. The video is in the dahlia playlist. Hope you're having a great day!
@@TONYAwiththeflowers I figured as much, thought just in case. I was thinking too, maybe you'll be the Sunflower Steve of a new Dahlia, now that would be exciting.
