Working my way through some of Steve's videos that I missed. Sad in many ways to watch these but what a lovely man and a great gardener. It is nice to think Steve's videos will be watched for years to come and new gardeners wiĺl be inspired as I was by Steve's knowledge and enthusiasm.
My problem with sweet peas is the heat we get starting in June. Combine that with freezes well into March ,and I have difficulty getting many blooms. This year I’m trying one of the most heat-tolerant varieties. I think I’ll try sprouting indoors and then placing the tray in a cold frame (once we finish those veg). Thanks so much for making me think this through!
I sowed some back in October which went into my un heated greenhouse and also found some volunteers in my garden. They have both somehow survived both heavy frost's we have had. Tough and beautiful ☺️
Thanks for this reminder on sweet pea sowing. I’ve grown the Chelsea collection with great success before, and those choices from Thompson & Morgan look lovely! Can’t wait to see them all in bloom 😊
I planted mine scented girlpeas in November in the glasshouse…I pinched them out in late December and they’re flying through the cold snaps(-9)! I’m too impressed with them 🤞🌸
Wonderful Steve! The hiscent is incredible! I’m doing those again this year and saved seed from last year. Looking forward to them; I haven’t sown mine yet😊
Fascinating, regarding the slug pellets. Steve, are you saying the slug will ignore the tempting seedlings and go for the pellets? Or are you aiming to get the slug before the seedlings come up? I had a slug problem in my greenhouse for the first time last year, I'm keen to keep on top of them this year but like you, I want to be careful. I'm wondering if I could temp them out and knock them back before I put my chilli seedlings in at the end of February.
Thanks Steve, I've planted my in the greenhouse with a perspex cover over them to keep the mice away till they gemanate. Hope this is ok? My fingers are crossed.
Perfectly timed video Steve. I also bought the Chelsea collection on your recommendation from an earlier vid. Can't wait to plant them. Just wondering if it's worth microwaving the compost to eradicate slugs and possible weed seeds? Be interested in your thoughts. Thanks
I forget to plant my sweet peas I did them November time. Got load of sweet peas growing now. About 2 inches perfect timing really last year I lost lose cos they got to tall and I had no where for them
Such thorough information thank you. I hope to do better with sweet peas this year. You put 2 seeds in each cell so will you thin to 1 plant or leave them both grow? The reason I ask is mine seemed to be choking each other out midseason so I wondered if I planted too many?
Morning, hope your well I’m 3 years into my gardening / allotment Question if you please sir I’ve copied you on this video The seed have now germinated Do I continue to let them grow in my kitchen or do I move to my cold frame ?? They are like 1 to 2cm tall at the moment Thanks Tom Deller Swindon
@@genaday2393 There are approximately 40 species of slug currently found in the UK, with only a small number of these considered pest species. Many eat dead or dying vegetation and thereby make compost. Some eat dead carrion, and the Leopard slug eats other slugs - a bonus if you have these in your garden. Better to use a deterrent like Grazers which just gives the slug an upset stomach so it moves on
If they are munching my seedlings, they are bad slugs Steve. Still, I am using them in a very responsible way, in a tiny contained area only, and advise doing the same to everyone else in this scenrio.
@@DigwellGreenfingers I really hate these big cartons with big spouts they come with though, it encaurages people to sprinkle them like confetti. It always got on my nerves that has
