The wood, spruce (Picea abies), can be splitted without cooking, but splits more easily when cooked. If there are knots in the wood, the tend to be very hard on the thin edge on the splitting knife (bevel around 17 degrees) and the cooking helps to make the knots a lot softer. The wood are cooked for about 2 hours and must be split while still hot.
