In this video I make a simple sampled beat twice on the Roland SP-404A, first using the Pattern Sequencer then the Resample method.
The samples I use come from my recent chopping tutorials where I breakdown my approach and techniques.

The drum samples I used are from my new pack "SP-202 Lo-Fi Chopped Breaks"

Let me know what you think, Pat Seq Vs Resample is an interesting debate in the SP404 community. I use both and find advantages either way...

Your timing is so good either way but I happen to like the resample method better. Thanks for your great tutorials.

Chip Crell thanks man! Can’t deny that the groove with resample can be sexier n mix-wise it kind of ties together more...

I must say this was interesting to see Nonjuror mainly because I have not used the pattern sequencer at all with my Sp-404sx but i guess it depends on the producer workflow and what feels comfortable to them...prop's on the vid too btw luv to see SP strictly content

proflogik4110 cheers man, pat seq didn’t come easy, I thought it didn’t work right but I put on The Dark Knight and practiced recording and deleting patterns to the click for a few hours and it started to come together. For me, the number one reason to work with the PS is if I’m making a beat for a client who needs the individual tracks to mix later.

wait how did you play over the drums in resample mode without the drums cutting out?! awesome vid take my sub
@Nonjuror

Cheers man! This drum loop I made was in stereo and the piano sample was in mono so if the piano chops overlap slightly I’m still good, if I played three piano chops somehow accidentally it would’ve cut out.

My opinion is, if you're not going to use the pattern sequencer's quantize functionality, you're better off resampling - you'll get cleaner loops that way. However, the one main advantage to recording a pattern with the sequencer is FX timing: i.e. the BPM of a recorded pattern will always supersede whatever arbitrary tempo the 404 has guessed for each of your samples or resampled beats, so you can use the time-based FX with more precision when performing. Cheers!

P.S. Another way around this problem is to record an empty pattern with the sequencer, and have it running in the back ground while you perform your resampled beats; just to keep the time-based FX in line. This is what I do, and it works perfectly. Best of both worlds!

Holy crap dude, having your cake AND eating it too! That’s wicked, I never would’ve thought of that. I dig it. It is kind funny that once you get a sample over like 2 bars that machine has no idea what it’s tempo is...

@@Nonjuror Ha, ya, well, I find that it guesses wrong more often than not regardless, and tends to completely change its mind from one pad to the next anyway, ultimately making a mockery of your "DJFX Looper" skillz (smirk). But if you're jamming over a ghost pattern, it doesn't matter what the 404 claims the pad BPM to be, the FX will always listen to the pattern BPM. Man-over-machine, my friend... Gotta make that shit comply (wink). Cheers!

@@Nonjuror LOL... Sometimes I feel that day isn't all that far off. Hell, I struggle enough with keeping my gear in line, and it's not even self-aware (smirk). Cheers!

The pattern sequencer seems to always quantize the notes I play & sometimes when you hit the 1st note, it puts it on the last bar. So annoying. Give me the resample method
@Nonjuror
@Nonjuror 5 лет назад
Duuuuude that adding it the last bar is such a fkn bastard thing to do...I know it too well....resample def for the win when it comes to the loop starting right and looping clean / naturally

@@Nonjuror the spvids guy has some solution for that issue. The sequencer's also good for muting individual sounds if you apply an effect "maybe eq all down or a different silent effect" to all then unapply effect to unmute.

Is the pattern sequencer quantizing your timing? Hands down, the resample method had a much better feel. Hands down…heh, I made a pun.
@Nonjuror
@Nonjuror 5 лет назад
Haha I see what you did there! No quantize but yeah, I agree, there’s more soul in the groove on the Resample version.
@ΑλέξιοςΓρηγορίαδης
What about when you wanna record individual kits to your DAW when resampling ?
@Nonjuror
@Nonjuror 4 года назад
That's the downside to the resample method, the mix is what it is...that's one of the main reason I use the pattern sequencers more often these days
@wigmaster7894
@wigmaster7894 3 года назад
@@Nonjuror set sequencer to 99 bars, turn off quantize and metronome and just jam like you're resampling. now you can go back and edit / swap samples
