Brand spanking new and ALL because of you and Brenky inspiring me! Now I've just dicovered MUJO too 0.o so many great artists. keep up the great content m'man!
Roland, take notes. THIS is how you do a tutorial/overview. Thanks for this, your explanations are clear and allow even a noob to understand what does what and how.
I love the realness in this video. The tutorial was articulate and the energy was uplifting. I bought one so many years ago and recently pulled it out of storage. I need to learn so I will be watching all your vids. Stay motivated. 💯
Hey man I just bought this machine from a friend. Instructions are all in Korean. I cannot express enough how much this video has and continues to help me. It's a perfect tutorial. I go back every time I get confused. Thanks so much. Subscribed. Keep it up
Thanks for posting this. My SX arrives tomorrow. This is very helpful. Side thought regarding battery power. It is cool that they make them that way. I will say Korg is horrible about making something battery powered and NOT including a power cable though. Of all the cheap ways to try to save a buck.
I never really comment on videos buut, I wanted to thank you for this content. A great presentation that has made learning my Sp404a as easy as can be. Honestly I wish you luck with your youtube career.
@@willcasket_goycdyg it's a great starter system. I just got my mpc live 2. I will not be selling the sp404. It's an amazing system and has a lot of lofi style effects I dont want to lose. I will just sample from the sp404
Thanks for this awesome video. I just got my SP404SX after watching too many beat making/lofi videos. Your walk-though was perfect to get me started, so thank you very much!
Hey y'all, another beginner trick I forgot to mention: you can select an MFX more easily by having MFX on, hold function and press either 1- 12 pad for MFX 1-12
Thank You for Posting this Video! It helps to have someone like you go over things Slow, and Simple! You put a Lot of Time into Making this More Understandable for Many People! Good Clear Video, with Good Clear Spoken English! Thanks Again! God Bless You Brother!
You breakdown your tutorials and make it easy to understand! I don’t have one of these I have a maschine mk3 and really wish you had a tutorial on that!
Thank you for this tutorial very informative i am waiting on my Roland SP404SX just like your unboxing it is coming from Japan a week from now. It's just a matter of time to finally get one cause it is discontinued product.. I'll jump on it right away when it arrives... Thanks Brotha.. DJ Fonzz 💯
Great vid thanks for taking the time. It may help me get over this damn hurdle... I'm an old skool sampler user since the 80s had many many samplers and have had an OG one of these since 2017 {i had hoped i could use it for extra sample time with my sp1200 like we used to do with akai s950 + the fx are a must have.... yet even now I still can't get my head around it whenever I plug it in! I love how it sounds and am determined to find my way of using it. This doesn't work like any other piece of kit which is it's unique beauty but I do wish there was a version that had slightly better midi sequencing and sampler features (eg midi tracks / mutes / mpc style '16 levels' or somesuch way to put the pads in chomatic mode or multi velocity/filter or whatever parameter like + sample choke groups + maybe a little more to the quantise like timing & swing shift. I've mainly held on to this for it's great sound and fx + its perfect as a soundboard / like an inexpensive and programmable Instant Replay (anyone remember those crazy devices?). My main point of frustration is that it sounds so much better than many samplers but I can't imagine trying to make full songs and get the stems to mix after the fact which is a process i enjoy. Im blimmin well determined to join in on this SP404 party!!! Til then my trusty 1200 will have to suffice 🤠
I didn't know about the resample to apply effect on multiple pads! Or tapping delete to cut a pad out of a pattern (I've been starting those from scratch when I mess up 😂)
Assuming this was imported from Japan, because the reason why the manual is in Japanese is because the SX model is still produced and only available for purchase within Japan. If you're in the US, the SP-404 model available for sale, brand new, is the SP-404A which comes with a manual in English. When the SP-404SX was still available new in the US, it came with an English manual as well.
nice video, i like the sp404a, but why is Every video/song/artist playing such down tempo slow stuff? do you think the sp404a would be a good match with Digitone, with Digitone’s MIDI sequencer triggering the sp404a, give the sp404a some “Speedy Gonzalez” vibe, mixed together with the amazing Digitone?, thanks
yeah man, it can do lots of stuff. some people make house music on it too. It's just a sampler, but I guess it just lends itself to downtempo lofi stuff.
@@freejazzbone No problem. I've done a bunch of stuff with the Elektron gear and the SP404. some of it's on my channel. But over all, I think the lo fi downtempo is because of the low quality sound it creates. Plus, chill hip hop is just so nice.
If I understand correctly, is that you have to format the sd card prior to beginning sampling. If so, how is that done? Many thanks for your time and knowledge!
Hey there. Mine came with an SD card and I didn't do anything to it. If you buy one it should have an SD card and you should be able to just run with it.
Great video I’ll will be watching it a few times over. Question ☝🏽🕺🏾 so I have a long pattern that I want to cut up into small samples can I use the mark function to mark the beginning and end of the parts I want and then move that section over to another button using the exchange function without effecting the original length Just exchanging over the marked sections I want .....
yup, absolutely how you do it. Mark it, adjust it, then copy to a new pad so that you have a duplicate and it will keep the mark, then truncate that pad. this way you always keep your long sample.
Danny Montreal Hey cool vid. Was wondering your opinion if it is worth it to trade my old microkorg and volca sample for a new sp404a? I also have a beatstep pro and I am wondering how they work together. Thanks.
man that's so tough to answer. everyone has a unique idea of a good workflow. For me that would be a yes, but remember you'll still need to get sounds in to the 404. so you could use sample packs and sample shit off records, tape, the internet, make your own kits, but if you don't have a synth you'll not be able to add custom sounds as this makes no sounds itself.
User 173 Thanks man. This really helps me out. I’ve been so keen to get a SP404 based on what I’ve seen and heard people do with them. I currently have a Volca Sample, Digitakt and Akai MPC. Do you think I could justify getting ANOTHER sampler? By that I mean with the SP404 bring anything new or interesting to the table? The Digitakt I love for the workflow but it is limited. The MPC is a learning curve for me but there is so much you can do with it....
@@buckbumble well the 404 is a unique sampler in that it truly imparts that wonky, lofi grit that it's a hallmark of. It's also fun to play. The effects being played real-time over a set is truly a lot of fun. Also, you can use it like an effects machine too, you can run a synth through it, effect it with the numerous effects on the 404 and record it into digitakt, or the MPC. I have the digitakt and I had the MPC LIve. I sold the MPC live, although with some of the new sequencing features, I sort of wish I hadn't. I've sold the digitakt before, bought it again, and am thinking I'll sell it since it's just collecting dust. That being said, the 404 and digitakt are completely different beasts and there is NOTHING wrong with owning them both :D you can never have too many samplers.
User 173 oh man! I’m spending so much during lockdown! Haha! Well, at least I’m doing something creative. Thanks for clarifying man. I am going to save up for the A.
User 173 final dumb question. Is it worth buying a new 404SX instead of the A for a little more money? I’m not bothered with the vintage aspect of things.
Thanks for this great video! You explained all the important features very well, but I still got two question though: 1. Is it possible to create a pattern with, for example, the drum track of a beat, whereas the melody is recorded in one sample slot via resampling? 2. Are all samples, their pad position and the pattern data stored in one folder on the sd card, so that a "project" can be easily be backed up? Thanks in advance for your answer and please do some more videos about the 404!
Hey there. so for the first question, you can record and resample on independent pads, but you can not play a drum beat on one pad, and resample to another without copying that drum beat too. so you'll need a DAW or something else to bounce back and forth with, like I use the OP1 in this video. Second, all your patterns and samples are indeed kept on one folder with sub folders for each bank. it's very nice and easy to back up.
Appreciate this . I have yet to dig into mine. I really like your thoughts on stickers at the end, too. I never thought of it that way, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks again!
