"Space: 1999 is a British science-fiction television series that originally aired from 1975 to 1977. In the opening installment, nuclear waste from Earth stored on the Moon's far side explodes in a catastrophic accident on 13 September 1999, knocking the Moon out of orbit and sending it and the 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha hurtling uncontrollably into space."

My childhood comes flooding back from 1978 when I used to watch this at 9:30am on UK TV and remember that theme tune.

First season a little more low key and epic sounding. But this one had a certain spacy action feel to it. Both good I think but in different ways.

I don't know anything about this show, but the way that girl turns around with her ponytail is the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Back in the day, before focus groups existed. They could have asked anyone, season 1 theme music was far better.

Whole family with the exception of my little sister use to watch this show together on the weekends,brings back alot of memories of my bratty little sister who was terribly afraid of Maya and use to distance herself as far from the TV as possible.

i remember this show being on TV as a small kid (i was born in 72) and Star trek was also on at that time...and by the time i was 10 years old or so, there would later be Battlestar Galactica and Buck Roger (with Gil Gerard playing Buck Rogers)

I'm 45, too, and I loved this show as a kid! It was a mind-blowing concept that the moon could be torn from its orbit around the Earth. I always thought this intro was by far the best.

As a kid watching Barbara Bain, "she made me feel funny, like when we used to climb the ropes in gym class." Catherine Schell was the show's version of Spock.

SPACE 1999 one of Gerry Andersons master pieces...loved this as a kid. Still bloody waiting for SPACE 2099 which should have been 2199 with a base on an asteroid rather than a moon as it would make more sense to be blown adrift via a nuclear explosion.

This was what gave proof to an ongoing, intergalactic / cosmic vouyaging adventure - yes, "Star Trek" was 1st . . . but it led up to an American "Lost in Space" all the way to "Battlestar Galactica" & all of the sci-fi series cliff-hanger/penny dreadfuls that followed through television studios reaping profit from a culled fan base. At the time, Maya may have been exotic, but every teen boy wanted a shot with Barbara Bain (formerly of "Mission Impossible" TV series). I am glad that Martin Landau went from the western classic "The Nevada Kid" (with Steve McQueen) to co-starring with Jim Carey in "The Majestic"...his career has been a kaleidoscope of coolness.

@sosidecop64 It does, in the pilot episode the moonbase crew watches a news report about gravity disruptions as well as earthquakes in California, Southern France and the Balkan peninsula after the moon has left Earth's orbit. Furthermore, the tides will cease and the Earth's axis will start to destabilize, so yes, humanity is in for a rough ride.

@Internetizen02 - actually, it was just an action shot filmed for the credits. The scene in The Exiles took place in Koenig's quarters and he was standing. When he turned, it was slowly.

@MrVpassenheim
@MrVpassenheim 8 лет назад
+Vaio Sun You're definitely NOT in the minority. Season 1 music theme actually has, you know, rhythm. You can dance to it, and it was exciting. This theme "song" is all over the place. I dare anyone to prove they can hum to this. A good theme song you can usually sing to it or hum it while driving. This one leaves you with "how does that go again?". Totally unmemorable.

I love this theme song. I like it way better than the first season one which I find a bit dark, brooding, and psychedelic. This one is more bright and upbeat in tone with a nice dynamic kick and swing and a touch of pizazz. On the other hand it could be made into a dance, especially for a comic dance gag act or something hilarious.

Although apparently the Moon was flung into space, they obviously had a big stash of Harmony Hairspray for Barbara Bain's hair-don't at 0.23. Bouncy barnet.

I just realized that if you reorder the scenes in reverse, you get a short story that kind of makes sense. The first scene would be Maya. Helena sees Maya (THE OTHER WOMAN). In a jealous rage she storms down the corridor to Cmdr Koenig's office. Almost taken by surprise, he shoots her in self defense.

I once asked a friend who worked in the music business, the same question about Wonder Woman - apparently TV contracts with the musician's unions dictated that you had to re-record the theme music once every year. Could be the same reason here.

I like 2 better overall, but there's something missing without the startup plunge bit. The rest of season 1 theme seemed more of a '70s cop show style, with the twangy guitars.

Legendary title theme tune by Derek Wadsworth! :D From what I know, there isn't a 'clean' version of the theme WITHOUT the 'futuristic' sound quality.... :( The sound of this memorable music performance was captured by microphones, then 'processed' by electronic means BEFORE it got to the tape recorder to be saved for use/posterity. Perhaps it could be re-recorded 'clean' and by copying this performance as much as possible. Just imagine a CD-quality 'clean' version of this! :D

So, at 0:20, Koenig just spins around in his chair for no explicable reason and fires his laser staple-gun -in the Command Centre. What are we to gather from this? That Koenig eventually took to randomly gunning down members of his staff whenever he got bored?

Totally outlandish show. A nuke big enough to blow the moon out of orbit would blow it into itty bitty pieces. And they would have to be moving at a pretty good clip to, not only break Earth orbit, but to encounter so many planets in so short a time. It's only redeeming elements? Martin and Barbara. Not to mention Cathrine Schell and Barry Morse. Kudos to the special efx folks, too. Other than that, crap.
