It really was ahead of it’s time. Bleak, oppressive, human and realistic in approach. How people act in a war that we are loosing. With a government that doesn’t have our best interests at heart. Drama, good writing and acting make for the best sci-fi, not simple trope of cowboys and Indians and giant space battles every episode. FOX canceled it and said it was too dark. Humans aren’t supposed to be losing a space war. Crusade and Odyssey 5 were both brilliant shows ahead of their times. Both canceled after 1 season. All three of these shows paved the way for Battlestar Galactica.
It's definitely ripe for a remake. I can imagine it getting a 4 or 5 year run via syndication as this show had a lot of elements that were later incorporated into the reimagined BSG years later and that did very well so there's no reason why this couldn't be redone like that.
In France it was named "Space 2063". A friend from college gifted me the book for my birthday back then, thanks again bro! I was so mad with the ending of that unique season. It definetly needed (at least) a second one.
Yeah, it was a good show. A few years back I got the whole thing (just one season) on DVD. Great theme song, and great fun to see a "WWII"-esque existential struggle in space. My favorite episode: McQueen goes out there in his hammerhead, injured, mano-a-mano with "Chiggy von Richthofen." When he comes back, they all just stare at him in awe. McQueen was a bad ass.
I kinda loved and hated the fact that any of the main characters was just up for elimination, there was some actual suspense, you never knew if/who/when they would decide to just kill off one of the wildcards.
Such a good show, shame they cancelled it. Even the CGI effects were very polished and nothing like the crap CGI we see today And Col. Tyrus Cassius McQueen was easily the most badass Space Marine colonel ever lol
All of them. Seriously, screw that network. Every sci-fi and fantasy show that wasn't X-Files they've ever had on that network has bitten the dust after just one or two seasons. It's like they expect blockbuster ratings right out of the gate or else. A lot of good shows were killed way too early because of that mindset.
Yep. Sadly only one season and the creators saw the impending cancellation and just said screw it and killed off nearly the entire cast in what became the series finale. That was tragic considering they had a 5 year story outline to go with much like Babylon 5 did.
The cast are older now, in their 50's or so, so it makes no sence to make a sequel with them all still being pilots. They would probably gave been promoted to higher ranks.
Rodney / Hawkes as the new colonel and the war having dragged for decades after the failed peace talks would be an interesting start point., and lean into the father/son dynamic of Hawkes and McQueen. The actor who played West hasn’t done anything since, but would be a fun name drop for a senior ground forces general or something.
Galactica (which I love very much) stoleeee muchhhhhhhhh from this series... MUCH. And I would love this series to be redone, WITH THIS MUSIC, this was TOP SERIES back then.
Great show and with all great fox shows in the 90's it doesn't get millions of people tuning in right away the cancel it. They could have promoted the show more and given it time to find an audience. Heck M*A*S*H was a ratings disaster it's first two to three seasons, but cbs kept promoting it and it eventually went on to find it's audience and become one of the biggest sitcoms of all time. Heck to this day it's still the most watched series finales in tv history and one of the most watched tv broadcast in United states history.
It was only on for one year in the mid 90's on Fox before getting cancelled. The show did get a complete series DVD release though and it's worth checking out as it's pretty good for the most part. There's quite a bit of it that later inspired the reimagined BSG in regards to tone and storytelling.
If this gets rebooted can we get the Mecha designer Shoji Kowamori as he has designed not only the VF fighters of Macross but Thunderbird Shadow from Thunderbirds are go (2015).
i miss when tv was just meant to be fun and not some EPIC EVENT with OH MY GOD WHAT IS THE MYSTERY LETS NOT FIND OUT EVER BECAUSE THATS THE ONLY REASON YOU WATCH WOWEEEEEEEE. like when shows didnt have to be for everyone
