Opening for TEDxIndianaUniversity was Xploration Outer Space producer and star, Emily Calandrelli’s tongue in cheek summary of why space exploration is actually a misguided and empty pursuit, upon which billions of dollars are wasted every year.
Emily Calandrelli is a producer and the host of FOX's Xploration Outer Space, a nationally syndicated educational program about the space industry. She is also a writer for TechCrunch where she covers
technology topics with a focus on commercial space companies.
Emily graduated from MIT with a Masters in Aeronautics and Astronautics and second Masters in Technology and Policy. While at MIT, Emily was awarded the Rene H. Miller Award for the best piece of Systems Engineering work in the AeroAstro department. She received her bachelors in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from West Virginia University. As an undergraduate, Emily received the Truman
Scholarship, Goldwater Scholarship, and placed on USA Today's All-USA Academic First Team.
Emily enjoys writing, speaking, and posting on her social media (@TheSpaceGal) on the topics of science literacy, space exploration, and equality in STEM fields.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

@in nxj Actually you’re wrong. CFCs caused a hole in the ozone layer and we stopped using them in the hole is going away. Humans have caused problems on earth and we have fixed a lot of them. But climate change has at least a dozen variables and scientist are clueless about each of them individually and even more clueless when it comes to their interaction together. The two things people use to prove man-made climate change is the hockey stick graph and models. Michael Mann manipulated the data when he created a hockey stick graph and that has been debunked and proven. The hockey stick graph is completely bogus. And for nearly 50 years to computer models using manipulated algorithms and manipulated data still can’t close to getting anything even remotely accurate. Man harm the environment? Absolutely. His man contributing to, change? Maybe. To some degree probably. But man is not causing climate change. And there is no, absolutely zero, proof or evidence to say otherwise. If it was people would believe it. If there was proof scientist would not manipulate the data and lie about it. That’s not what you do with the evidence is on your side. I suggest you read Bjorn Lomborg, Robert Bryce, Michael Shellenberger, and Judith Curry.

Knowing people holding opposite views to "big/high tech", "space exploration", and "global warming" will never open a video/article with these key words in it, she is exploring a new way. By presenting evidence/facts to "support" her opinion of the title, she finds a way to force people with opposite views to accept the facts. Sometimes when we accept a opinion blindly just because one authority said so, we don't go deep to search for evidence. By trying hard watching her video to find reason why space exploration is bad, viewer ends up knowing more facts of what's going on. This is pretty brilliant!

Sea ice surrounding Antarctica reached a new record high extent this year, covering more of the southern oceans than it has since scientists began a long-term satellite record to map sea ice extent in the late 1970s." you can easly find this data on official NASA web page... but hey they have explanation there why its normal as well as here she have why there can be more snow... and how satelite can prove that hummans have anything to do with climate change? How there is no proper scientific model to predict weather nex year, month or even next week but somehow people like her trying to convince you that she have PHD so she knows what she is talking about... on wikipedia article "List of weather records" you can find "Coldest summer (month of July in the Northern Hemisphere): −33 °C (−27.4 °F) degrees; Summit Camp, Greenland on 4 July 2017.", do you know that climate on this planet have changed many times before hummans showed up? Yeah I'm guessing she's in it for the money since I suspect she's smart enough to see though political science that wouldn't recognize the the scientific method if it slapped them in the face. There are things we can and have done that could harm the planet, or at least the life on it, like Freon emissions that started to eat away the Ozon-layer, but CO2, isn't that big a contributor to the greenhouse effect in the first place, all it does is make plants happier, not really the environmental hazard some would make it. And yes temperature has changed a lot, there's a reason old Egyptian cities are in the now barren dessert, it wasn't barren back then, since it was so much warmer back then Sahara had monsune rains. (And here in Sweden at the time we had nowadays Mediterranean fauna in the middle of Sweden). (Bronze age). People often bring up the melting glaciers, yes they have been melting since the last ice-age peaked about 20000 years ago, what should worry is if they stop melting.

She's a real gem this one. The dilemma of choosing one thing over the other is a tempting but ultimately flawed dilemma. It's like saying *"I want to be a doctor but I also want to do painting. I can't possibly do them both."* What's wrong with pursuing both endeavors? You can't enjoy a career and a hobby at the same time? My grandfather was both an architect and an artist. He worked for some of the largest corporations but when he went home he made sculptures.

Alexander Kale It’s scary to think there are people like you out there that so vehemently deny science in favor of gut hunches. “Global warming” isn’t necessarily a warming of the globe. Global warming is an extreme of all weather patterns. You don’t know any of this because you’re not a scientist. And neither am I. I trust professionals because they’re educated on the subject. It’s also the same reason you let trained doctors do surgery on you instead of witch doctors. All climatologists do is study weather patterns and factors that affect weather, from the dawn of time. They use the SCIENTIFIC METHOD of observation.....no guess work, no gut hunches from the peanut gallery. They show their observations to the public, but the knuckle dragging morons think they have a better grasp with their extensive experience on the subject. Please.

@@ossiehalvorson7702 Ok i will search about that... but combustion is not the only source of gghs. materials transport etc. do they compensate their emissions? i guess they don't considering they have climate deniers in charge. scientists can say everything about climate change but nothing will change until collapse of civilization will occur. now they want to go on mars... i have no words

Can anyone explain to me the joke that is being made at 12:28 about Earth (C) and Mars (V)? I have no idea what the symbol in front of the letters means
@tomate4273
@tomate4273 2 года назад
I had to search it, it is the symbol for the "Command" key in Apple's Mac. The joke is Ctrl+C Ctrl+V

The downvoters didn't watch the video past the first four minutes.

Believe it or not, but there are legitimate reasons to down vote for people who finished watching the video and fully understood the sarcasm.

I watched 4 minutes and stoped because she omited all the data from NASA that is telling different story, she is talking about 2013 but for some reason dont know that in 2014 Antarctic sea ice extent exceeded any data from period when satelites started to monitor ice levels(1970)... And what about all Ice Ages? Why people like her have PHD in science and in the same time completely lack knowledge that is not a secret for 10 years old kids... You can find proper scientists that are not ready to sell PHD for money or for fame in TV and will show you unbiased data that is telling completly different story!

For someone so intelligent it baffles me she thought this was a good way to communicate her idea... half the viewers will miss the sarcasm and the others like me find the sarcasm annoying.

i thought it was annoying for the first 4 mins but then it was easy to follow for the rest of the vid and made the presentation more powerful than if it wasn't all sarcastci i think it requires iq above 100. do you have that?

I feel for her family members. That tone of voice is now in my room 101. I get irony, believe me I'm English but I'm now off jumping in front of the 14:55 to Euston. God bless.

Thanks to your comment I listened to the end. I had gotten halfway through and was thinking " Screw her! The space program is one of man's greatest achievements!" Thanks to you I learned to listen patiently. She's a very young lady.

Always the danger of transferring an ironic talk where you appear to espouse idiotic views at the start, before demolishing those views and arriving at an inescapable conclusion, to a non-captive audience.

Yes, we really should appropriately title our talks, videos, and our stance. This trend of bait and switch is bad in a culture where people's attention spans lack the ability to follow through a 15 minute video.

She should have switched out of the sarcastic approach halfway in, it just became kinda annoying after a while and detracted from what she was saying.
