This almost made me cry... Space Mountain the way it should have stayed... Okay, some of the updated effects on Mission 2 were an improvement, but i miss the moon and most important: the fantastic soundtrack.
Totally lame. 7 1/2 minutes of messing around, and then a minute on the actual ride, consisting of mostly darkness, with a few flashes of light and a moon face.
I am a huge fan of Jules Verne and I am very disappointed that I missed this version of Space Mountain. By the time I finally got to DLP in 2008 (and again in 2013), it was Mission 2, which is fine as Space Mountains go, but wasn't any different from the Space Mountains in the USA or Japan. It lost its character and became a ride that's really great to look at. Everything really charming about it is now on the outside.
Actually, this isn't based on the Jules Verne novel From the Earth to the Moon. It is actually based on George Lumiere's A Trip to the Moon, which was a short from 1916.
"Voyage dans la Lune" was made by Georges Melies and released in 1902. The short film was itself inspired by Verne's book "De la Terre à la Lune", Jacques Offenbach's operetta "Voyage dans la Lune", and H.G. Wells' novel "The First Men in the Moon." Yes, Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune took most of its aesthetic inspiration from the Melies film and further developed it, but the film and the book are so conflated in people's minds by now that they can be spoken of in the same breath. The ride's name even came from the book, even though in the book the capsule is only launched in the final chapters. Most of Verne's novel is a satire of American culture.
Went on this when I was 10 in the early 90's. Amazing. I loved how the music lined up with the ride right down to where it brakes at the end. Back when Napster was around, I was able to download the music to this ride.... still have it and still listen to this day driving in my car mimicking the movements of the ride while I drive.. where possible. Great memory of Eurodisney.
The attractions sub title was 'From Earth to the Moon' after the Jules Verne novel and just like in the book, the astronauts are shot out of a cannon. An interesting fact: the location the astronauts were launced from in the book is very close to where WDW was built.
OMG I have suuuuuuuuch great memories about this ride. This was absolute perfection. The music, the atmosphere, the effects, the story, (pleaaaaaase read from the earth to the moon from Jules Verne) it all worked so perfectly toghetter. They fucked up a great coaster with mission 2. And now I fear the worst when they will put a poor 3 months of work to "transform" it into a star wars attraction? Where is the fantasy gone?
Dimitri Dehouck agreed. This was one the best. To be perfectly honest mission 2 was decent but lacked the beauty. Hyperspace mountain just makes me want to jump off a bridge.
Totally lame. 7 1/2 minutes of messing around, and then a minute on the actual ride, consisting of mostly darkness, with a few flashes of light and a moon face. It needs a makeover, badly. Why not look at rides you can see, and last longer like Mystic manor- Hong Kong, or Avatar Flight of Passage, Disney World, or Shanghai Pirates of Caribbean.
I prefer this version of Space Mountain over the present day one. The Steampunk aesthetic was just awesome. :) Copper, brass and rivets everywhere^^ And that awesome orchestral music :D
It's been many, many years since I went to Disneyland Paris, but the memories are still there :-) Thanks for uploading - you've brought back some happy times!
The ride was based on a French novel that was set in the U.S.. Viewed from one direction the flags are blue, white and red, the French flag. Viewed from the other direction, they are red, white and Blue, the American flag colors. I thought the flags were very clever, myself.
This reminds me of when I was in Disneyland Paris with my Mom xD We went into Space Mountain and... aww, it was so~oo cool ^.^ You can't imagine just from seeing this vid. But it's great that you filmed and put it online here, because now I can refresh this memory every now and then. Thanks so much
I love all Space Mountains but Euro Disney is the best. Love the industrial revolution art style inspired from Jules Verne including his famous cannon launch style. The other space mountains have a cold futuristic feel like Star Trek, which is fine, but Euro Disney Space mountain truly is grounded in a flight of fantasy.
Wow, what a uniquly wonderful ride it's a shame we will never get it back. I wish that Disney was still more concerned about storytelling in the parks rather than forcing every ride to have a movie attached to it.
I love the music. I love the ride. What a thrill!! I went to Disneyland 4 times when I was 12 and 14. Next year my boyfriend and I will be going to Disney World in FL to celebrate my recent news being cancer free. This means the world to me to be going to Disney, I really can't wait. I wish I was going NOW! I hope the Space Mountain in Disney World is just as excellent. :)
I went to Mission 2 for the first time last week. I noticed something was missing, as well as many other things, like: The great queue part The man in the moon The great giant blue thing that the ride runs through at 7:58 And the old one is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better, as well as the one at DL.
intersting new approach for the ride. I see it went less for the typical sci-fi theme and went more for that old silent movie about men going to the moon. Very clever.
mission 2 you cannot beat it, the original was in a class of its own, and the big moon smilling was just amazing, but mission two is sooo intense and the videos and graphics inside are out of this world
@daveindorset actually, there is music in space mountain mission 2, but the speakers on the trains were changed with some high tech new speakers, the only problem with this new speakers that they are very sensitive, and they can't stand to the constant vibration of the car! sometimes they work a lot of times they play the music with low volume sometimes they don't work.
When I went on it ; half way through (after the launch) the full ride stopped. I crapped myself and it stopped for almost 3 minutes. Ahhhh! Still loved it though!
i was there a few months ago and loved it =D queue was a bit too long, bashed my head a bit, almost lost my bag when it went upside down...but i loved it hehehe
Funny to look at the old one. I did it something like 15 times, however, i think i prefer the new one, for once you can almost believe it. I don't see why people miss the old one so much.
@jonathansaab It is in total darkness, you can't see the tracks of the rollercoaster, all you see is a lighted up "comet" thing, and you go at it with incredible speed, and the last moment before you hit it you just go all around it in all directions... and then another one, and another one..... I was 10 when i went, i still remember it no 15 years later as if it was yesterday, the most amazing rollercoaster EVER!!!
I've been to the Space Mountian at WDW Orlando many times, but I love the design of this Space Mountian, it's patterned after Jules Vern's "Earth to the Moon right?" Thanks for showing all the suff up to the ride Very cool!
I LOVE this ride. and I mean THIS ride, not Mission 2. The original one was just amazing and could easily be one of the best overall attractions in the world (if it wasnt for the roughness). It gives me the chills everytime I think about it and It literally almost makes me cry to know its gone.
Totally lame. 7 1/2 minutes of messing around, and then a minute on the actual ride, consisting of mostly darkness, with a few flashes of light and a moon face. It needs a makeover, badly. Wow. When I rode it, there was no one in line, so they didn't make me get out and I rode it again straight away. I had to get out after that but just ran through the queue (still no one in it) and rode a third time. I was a bit ill after that but it was awesome. Almost too bad there are lines now :)
I am so mad that I missed this ride. When I was 8 I wanted to go on, I was perfect height at the front, but when I got the the door and they checked me with their stick thingy, didn't making. Gosh I missed out.
the actual storyline is: you're blasted from too low in the cannon (thats why all the red lights in the beginning) you're shot too hard, go past the moon too the edge of the universe.
@disneygirly22 perhaps in Hollywood Studios in Disney World in place of Aerosmith coaster. And they could go with the original name: Discovery Mountain! :)
Oh, I tried it and it's fast and yeah if you didn't know there's rock music while you are on the ride! with colorful lights and stuff. Well, it's great that u will coz it's a great roller coaster! :) .
@Lightrocker100 noth rides have the tube. the only differences is that in space mountain mission 2, u don't see the moon and u don't go through a color tunnel. In mission 2. u see a a supernova and u go throught a red laser tunnel.
That's great that your going to Disney world and really great that you're cancer free . Space mountain in Disney world is a little older and similar to the one in Disneyland but still fun you'll enjoy it
can some1 plz tell me which is scarier, Space Mountain Mission 2 or Rock n Roller coaster!?! ive been on rock n roller coaster nd it was amaze bt my frend sed that space mountain was SOOO scary nd he wont go on it agen. i dnt no whether 2 go on it or not!!! plz reply!
@daveindorset also, there usually is smoke(when i went in august there was), sometimes they turn it off for maintenance reasons. anyways i agree with you, space mountain from the earth to the moon was so much better!!!
