I would legitimately love a warehouse coaster, one with no theming, and no unintentional stuff. No paint, ,no hiding supports, showing the switch track, maybe throw in a couple of boxes and fake wielding materials. No joke, that would actually be pretty cool.
I love being able to see the structure; it lets you appreciate the engineering work that went into it. And the fact that a relatively simple, slow coaster can still scare the heck out of people is a testament to what a brilliant idea a coaster in the dark is
This ride seems to make good use of the space it has. Without the lights you wouldn't think it's so condensed, especially with the hectic visual and audio effects the ride usually employs.
I love how Dark Rides are often essentially just very simple rollercoasters but with the lights off. The atmosphere, sounds and lighting literally sell the entire thing, to the extent that, when I see a mediocre outdoor rollercoaster, I generally think 'You should've just built it inside and turned the lights off and it would've been 10 times better'.
as a disney employee, 1:23 is where the lowest structure is to the ride vehicle, it's lower than the red strobe tunnel at the end, and what makes it scary is that people can touch the red strobe tunnel so that means they can easily touch the lowest structure.
During Halloween I rode this with lights off. ALL of the lights off. No stars, no hyperspeed tunnel, nothing. It was terrifying when you would suddenly drop. New Soundtrack was nice though!
i rode it during the disney villains after hours and they had it in complete darkness (the same as you) but like different villains screaming and yelling and everything and it was scary as shit lmaooooo
I’ve only ridden this ride once- as a tiny child, in the dark. I kept thinking I was gonna hit my head. Seeing this video close to like 20 years later, I can still pinpoint the exact overpass areas that scared me shitless lol! I know Space Mountain is an incredibly safe ride, but damn that tight layout spooked me XD
Space Mountain could really use a refurbish. It's so rough now, but I still ride it for nostalgic sake. I remember when I sobbed when my mom tried to get me to ride. If I only went on, I would have been a ride fanatic so much sooner.
Mkay but the wild mouse is scary tho Edit: for all the confused people, the wild mouse is a ride a Hershey park. It's not nessicarily a thrill ride, but it's got some really sharp turns that are high enough off of the ground to make you feel like the car could just fly off the track at any minute. It's not a literal mouse lol Edit edit: oKAY okay I know that it's not just at Hershey park that's just the specific model I went on as a kid y'all can chill
I remember riding this for the first time in '79 or '80. At that time it was THE roller coaster. I instantly went from being terrified of roller coasters to loving them.
Got stuck in this ride when I was very little with my dad. Sat in the dark for 30 minutes, they turned the lights on and it was awesome to see. They let us run a second time as well after which was cool.
This ride is rough. I remember getting off the ride once and hearing a guy go, "Feels like I just got beat up." I laughed at him then went back to the hotel clutching my bruised kidneys
This ride isn't really rough, I mean it does have a bump to it and it is kind of jerky but it's not bad at all. I've ridden this coaster 5 times now and will totally ride it again and again.
They should 100% make the clearance large enough for people to put their arms up, or lock arms so they can't at all. This video makes it seem like there isn't enough clearance..
I’ve had the pleasure of actually being on that ride WHILE it broke down. 😂😂 I was on the Omega side (the side rode in this video) and we actually broke down RIGHT before the first hill at 0:53. We were stuck there for about 10-15 minutes and when the lights came on it was amazing. We got to see so many carts on the Alpha side go past and we just kept waving at them. It was hilarious. We also loved waving at the People Mover whenever they’d pass. I’d like to think we created a core memory for so many people that day. 😂
This brings a whole new meaning to keep your hands and feet in the vehicle at all times. The bars and construction can be so close to one's head and shoulders at times.
In my opinion, Space Mountain is meant to be experienced with all of its effects, in near-total darkness. The main thing Space Mountain banks on is the unknown. Unless you’ve memorized every part of the track, you’ll never know what’s coming up ahead and that is what gives Space Mountain some, if not most of its intensity.
One of the most fun rides at Disney. I don't know why but the concept of a cart throwing me left and right without me knowing what's next always cracks me up 😂
I remember riding this coaster back in 1988 and it was completly dark in the ride, the only lights were strips along the track and I think that made the ride even more fun because you couldn't see what was coming up and it would suprise you no matter how many times you rode it. I wish they take it back to when it was like that since it would make the ride awesome to ride again.
@@MidnightSonnet Precisely, the screaming for some may be fear, but I'd wager the folks that would be doing that mostly avoid roller coasters. The vast majority of the people screaming on the rides are doing it because it makes it more fun. Sort of like how sports matches are a lot more fun when you're cheering for a team, even if you legit do not care which one of them wins. Even cheering against a hated team works.
@@madisoncontroversial7348 Exactly why this to me has been the freakiest coaster of them all, not knowing what's ahead and also the thought always in my mind of what if a metal bar shook loose and is now hanging in the area where the coaster goes. As you say, with your imagination running wild, totally freaks me out every time.
Shows you how good the imagineers are that they can theme this well enough to make what is basically a kid’s roller coaster feel like you’re zooming through space.
I still scream like a maniac on this ride and I've ridden it a million times. The darkness just adds so much fear...you can't tell what is coming next and you feel totally out of control. I love it!
@@navidpey194 I've been on Paris, Anaheim, and Orlando versions.. Paris was the best of the 3. The ride, not that disgusting piece of crap city. Disneyland was the only thing clean in Paris.
Space mountain isn’t really a fast ride, if I’m not mistaken the cars ride and test track are almost 2 times faster! (I think SM top speed is 27.5mph whilst the cars ride is 40mph & test track can reach 64.7mph!) What makes SM scary is how dark it is, causing unpredictability, how loud it is, how sharp the turns are, how bumpy of a ride it is & the seats! The one at DL is much smoother than this one and the DL car makes you feel MUCH safer!
It amazes me how simple and non intense this layout really is yet with all effects running it become an extremely fun and thrilling experience. If you plopped this down at any theme park I feel it wouldn’t garner any queue due to it not being nearly as advanced as most modern coasters however, within its context at Disney I have no problem waiting an hour for this thing
@@Chipchase_Here I hated roller coasters before I rode Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris which was also my first coaster with inversions. Now I love coasters
This lights-on video points out how brilliant the special effects are in this ride. The designers were able to create a convincing outer space experience with nothing more than story, well placed lights, and minimal practical effects, and it's nothing short of astounding.
Think this video is impressive? Try experiencing it for yourself! This happened to me once when the ride was shutting down and it was AMAZING... Except for the 30min wait to get us out of our cart 😂
Yeah, seeing it in the light makes you realize that the fact that not being able to see and predict what is going to happen really adds to the intensity of this ride
It's amazing how boring this ride is when the lights are on versus how exciting the ride is when the lights are off and full special effects lighting is turned on. The whole ride is the light show.
JustStache i believe the max speed you're going is in the low 30s mph. I think the real thrill are the sharp movements and, being a very early steel coaster, how rickety it all feels.
It’s insane how much track they pack in there...there’s a reason there’s an obligatory “Keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times and please remain seated” safety blurb for roller coasters...especially this one.
pretty much all roller coasters are designed with well over an arms length of space. It just feels like less when you're flying through wood scaffolding at 70mph.
@@ToomanyFrancis Not on the sides and "arm's length" would depend on what they are using as a reference. How about making it for the word's tallest human being and accounting for him/her to be sitting down with his arms out?
And that other guy who commented funnier because Space Mountain was actually sponsored by FedEx, but this one doesn't really make any sense. Just being honest.
This coaster is deceptively intense. Just rode for the first time in 15 years yesterday and was totally blindsided by the speed and all the quick turns. Great time!
@Jellyfnaf And Dino That's mostly because of how tight the turns are and how quickly it accelerates. Which is a helpful byproduct of needing to be contained within a building.
I think the darkness also adds intensity, not being able to see what's happening and just experiencing it through other sensations really does a number on your brain.
This ride was amazing when I went on it, it feels way faster when your actually in it. The only part to be scared of is the beginning with that turn, that scared me more the the roller coaster itself 😭
reminds me of once the ride had to be shut down while i was about halfway through it so all the lights came on and we were escorted out, and realizing just how relatively small the space was (compared to how far it feels like we're going i mean) and seeing all the tracks layered around each other and being reminded that we were just in a large cement room the whole time was really strange. Space Mountain in the dark working as intended is fantastic at atmosphere. Space Mountain with the lights on looks like some dinky ass ride in an abandoned mall.
Kali B i wouldnt be surprised if they use it for short term storage for the holiday decorations before and after being taken to long term storage since it's so dark you cant see it anyways.
I love riding it with strangers or kids or people who haven’t been on my family isnt up for most coasters so I’ve come to love single rider for the times and getting to know random people on a ride I think it’s fun to see them ride the first time for the 1000th
Ben Jacobs I know right! XD it’s so cool with the lights on. Because one time that I went on the people over with mom and dad in 2009 we did saw Space Mountain with lights on. THIS IS SO COOL! XD
DuelWheeling C, it obviously shouldn’t be occurring, which is why it’s rare that people get footage - and out of the few pieces of footage on RU-vid, this is easily the best.
But hey, it’s showing us what the track looks like in the light. That’s something you don’t usually get to see on space mountain unless the ride breaks down
Matthew Tyler should have also added, you also only get to see it like that on the people mover. Other than that, yeah. Wrong time to recommend the video.
I am tall and I always had the fear of losing part of my scalp so I would sit as low as possible and tilt head sideways. Some of those support structures look really close when the lights are on.
I actually rode Space Mountain with the lights on a few years ago. My science teacher hosted a (very expensive) trip to Florida to see Tampa, Disney World, WonderWorks Museum, etc. We got to ride Space Mountain with the lights on, then off. The best thing, we were there before the theme park had opened so there was no line. It was, needless to say, awesome
It's funny how everyone thinks they're gonna hit their hands if they put them up on this ride but do you really think Disney would let the ride stay like that if that was a possibility?
I went to Disneyworld maybe like 2 months ago and Space Mountain was one of my favourite rides, So it’s really cool to see what it would look like with the work lights on!
Here's a few tidbits of info about Space Mountain...Fyi, I'm a retired, in 2016, Engineer with Lockheed Martin here in Orlando but I just finished a two year stint (I resigned in February) in Security at WDW and I worked in Custodial at Magic Kingdom back in '74 - '75 my Sr. year in H.S. The current speed of Space Mountain is 28 MPH (Fyi, 7 Dwarfs Mine Train is 32 MPH), but back in '74/'75 when the ride hadn't yet opened the cast members were allowed free test rides during their lunch breaks...at that time the Engineers had the speed at 50 MPH...I heard at the time the engineers also did test runs at 55 and 60 mph. When the ride opened in '75 it was set at 42 mph and it was completely blacked out inside so the girders could not be seen at all. After a couple "incidents" the speed was lowered several times (down to 35 mph, then 32 mph and finally to today's 28 mph) and the lights were turned up several times so the girders can easily be seen (so as to hopefully keep people from trying to stand up). Needless to say a blacked out SM at 50 MPH was a hair raising ride that you felt lucky to have survived...the G forces I remember were pretty damn forceful.
I went to Space Mountain back in 1975 I was 12 years old and you're right the drama thing was pretty darn fast... 10 years ago I went with my kids and it seemed a hell of a lot slower thanks for the info
Every time I ride this again, I feel so nervous before getting on. After, I want to ride it again and again. Space Mountain has been one of my favorites for awhile.
WOW!! I never realized how close you come to the ceiling and side walls!! I'm too busy "turtle-ing" my head during lights out to notice where in the building I am!! Great Lights-On video!!! Thank you!!
A few weeks ago, I was on Space Mountian, and put my hands up, because surely, the beams must be out of reach. Nope, got my hand smacked by a metal bar. Damn thing bruised me up pretty bad, too. Those warnings about keeping your arms down are no joke.
Don't worry about decapitation, they make sure any support is out of reach by any possible human being and they have tested that. If you could hit your hand or your head on anything on this ride, it would not be in operation. I'm pretty sure that the default clearance is ~8-9 ft for most rides.
All I could think about on this ride was losing my head since I had heard from my friends about riding with the lights on and how close everything actually. That plus the dark and having to hold onto all of my stuff with a death grip really set the mood for the rest of that evening lol.
When u can see the scaffolding, & the track, etc, it just looks like a small roller-coaster inside of a building...or a big shed. Doesn't look Disney-like at all.
@@dme1016 , that's what separates Disney from other theme parks and roller coasters. Disney puts in the extra effects to hide the mechanisms behind the ride and make everything appear like something else. Their rides aren't the most extreme roller coasters out there, but the use of story telling makes an otherwise mediocre warehouse roller coaster into something fantastic.
