My goodness. My father was a music engineer and ran a digital recording studio in Chicago for years. One day in the early 90’s my best friend and I were playing space quest on his MIDI recording computer and he saw the setup screen said MT32. He said wait... let me set this up for you guys. MY GOD. This was the most incredible thing I’d ever heard in my life. A computer video game with perfect music!

Played this when it came out in the eighties - installed on our 386 from the original diskettes, and was enthralled throughout the journey. Just now listened to this amazing tune after 34 years - I knew I was going to get goosebumps if I remembered it note for note, but I wasn't prepared for how hard 0:59 hit me. Thank you for these amazing memories.

Holy smokes I played the hell outta this on my Childhood 486 DX2 66mhz running Windows 95 i remember my dad drops this MT32 into my lap and goes hook his up. I was only about 5 windows 95 was out. and we piped the audio from my PC into my pioneer home theater system in my room at my old childhood home. MY god did it sound good. dad made the mistake of turning the volume up all the way. the subwoofer was shaking my room during the intro. it was freaking loud but my dad said the smile on my face was freaking ear to ear.

Still got the 486 board too that became my sister's first pc when she was little. But it got a pentium overdrive for her so she could run her cd rom games when she was in pre school.

That's the _Kartrashian_ society we live in. The majority of people would rather watch _someone else's fake life_ then learn how to improve their own, let alone learn history. _"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."_ -- George Santayana.

Hi, great video. I really love the intro music. Unfortunately, I've been trying to reproduce it in DOSBox, but I cannot find the correct version of Space Quest III. All the versions I've downloaded are newer, and have a very short intro, before starting the game immediately. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

so, I guess they didn't have an option to play the sound effect audio ...you can hear 'where am i' on the SoundBlaster

BrandonX76 Some more recent games had an option to use midi/roland for the music AND digital sfx on a soundblaster card (with a noticeable memory cost). But for SQ3 you had to choose only one sound device.

@Frungi
@Frungi 4 года назад
To those who don’t know, I have one question: Why are you even here having never played a _Space Quest_ before? Go play them! You can find them collected on GOG and Steam, both frequently on sale, and you can even get them for free from sites like GamesNostalgia. And be sure to play _SQ3_ and up with an MT-32 (or emulator).
@Vednier
@Vednier 4 года назад
@@Frungi Maybe because those games dated horribly, beyond any modern tolerance levels? Yes, they old, but come on! Putting aside good music and occasional jokes they now not worth nor playtime not money and definitely not both at same time. GOG? Yes, they sell it, but honestly at that year those game should be free OR remade completely. Sometimes good old memories should be left laying dormant.
@Frungi
@Frungi 4 года назад
Kuribo Kutsu None of which explains why anyone who’s not interested in these games would be interested in this video. I have to disagree with pretty much everything you said here, considering that _The Crimson Diamond_ is a new game that exists. And that’s beside the fact that you seem to be saying only recent things have any value or merit, which is frankly absurd.
@Vednier
@Vednier 4 года назад
@@Frungi I disagree. At last in my case its EXACT reason why i was interested in this video - because i was vaguely interested what this game is about, but HELL NO, i'm not going nor to bother with dosbox to play or spend money on it, cause its one time interest. I'm, ofc, have respect to this game but, sorry, its just fossil now. We can dig up dinosaur bones, but that doesnt mean we need to pretend that they alive or to ressurect them. Also, i didnt said that only recent things have any value. I like to play Startopia, Stronghold, even SNES games and i hope that Black&White will eventually make it to GOG, thank you very much. But one have to draw a line and those DOS...games - no. Maybe PONG is still worth playing too? How often you play it now?
@Frungi
@Frungi 4 года назад
@@Vednier You are a very confusing man. And I think you’re confused: we were talking about experiencing something for the first time that you’ve never played before, not replaying something that you enjoyed in its time. Going with your dinosaur metaphor: We have a Jurassic Park. Those fossils *have been resurrected* using modern technology so that we can still enjoy them today. I’m not sure what difference you see between throwing a game into an SNES emulator (or maybe even a physical SNES that you keep around) and throwing a game into DOSBox or ScummVM, but maybe you just don’t enjoy adventure games as a whole, regardless of age. And that’s okay, no one enjoys every kind of game. But that again makes me wonder: What on earth got you interested in a game that you never had any interest in actually experiencing?

Fantastic. Is it the same (better? worse?) as Roland LAPC-1?
@barbarianbros
@barbarianbros 6 месяцев назад
LAPC-I (it's a 'i' for IBM, not a '1', there is also a LAPC-N for the japanese NEC computers) is basically a Roland CM-32L (MT-32 with 32 more instruments) and a MPU-401 (MIDI interface Unit) combined on an ISA PC-Card. Instruments sounds the same as long as the game does not use the CM32L exclusive instruments.
@DaniPlay912

How will it sound with the Roland SC-55? Weird questions, you know XD
@barbarianbros
@barbarianbros Год назад
I don't know if there is a 'General MIDI' patch for SQ3, GM was standardized 2 years after the game release. Anyway a patch would only 'transpose' instruments channels to nearest GM instrument, with none of the custom instruments created for the MT32.
