Even though the game is more linear than it presents itself, I always loved the way the space map feels like an open world. It gives an awesome sense of freedom, that once you get in that spaceship and get it working, you could go anywhere. But it was just the illusion of choice lol

@@GeorgGreat_GameReviews Just finished watching. Your critiques are fair and don't come across as harsh. You do a great job of presenting the evidence of your critiques. The way you solved the ladder problem by exploiting the parser was great! Despite having fond memories of the game, you definitely touched upon a lot of the frustrations I had with the game as well. I don't think I had the same critical mind when I was 11-12 years old :-). Your highlight of the "terminator" robot was my strongest memory of the game and it's good to see that part hold up at least. Is there a way to support your channel and your projects (e.g.: Patreon)? Was really great to see another video from you, seems like its been forever since we talked outside the comments! I never played the Space Quest series of games, but this is a very interesting and insightful look into not only some of the former games, but the latter ones as well. Explains why I had heard such mixed things over the years too. Adventure games do tend to speak a different language, and part of that is for the player to learn not only whats being asked of them, but also to try and solve some pretty obscure UI issues at times too. You've pointed out before how this can be both a good and a bad thing. Good in that it can draw you in as a player when you need to get into the headspace that the game is pushing you toward, increasing your immersion and investment. But if its executed poorly that can be a real problem too, especially in the case of a regression in design. I found the narrative of wanting to punish the in-game developer characters for inflicting so much frustration on you to be an amusing tale. Some of that banter almost suggested that the developers (whether real or character-based) had been forced to create this game, and thus they were using all kinds of 4th wall breaking and intentionally frustrating elements at times, delivering a poorer quality experience as you got deeper almost on purpose. Its hard to tell if this was strongly intentional and planned or just budget / time pressure during development then trying to be funny about it after the fact. One thing that you've often done in your videos is discuss ideas why developers would make certain design decisions in their gaming, and that has helped me enjoy a lot of aspects of some games that never really came together for me. When encountering some (both positive and negative) elements it will make me stop and think 'what could they have been thinking / trying to convey' at this point. I often see excellent examples of design in some tutorial areas and at the start of some games that can show just how thoughtful a developer was being when creating those elements. Maybe its just a lucky coincidence and not intentionally designed at times, but it always makes me appreciate a game even more when im able to get closer to the mindset of the creator, either to understand what they wanted me as a player to experience, or simply to appreciate how some aspect was designed with a thoughtful intent. Maybe thats why I've always appreciated talking to developers and creators over the years, hearing their insights and passions, what they wanted to do, whether or not they feel they succeeded, all of that adds so much more depth to a lot of the almost faceless products we come to experience. That sort of meta analysis and discussing it with friends can often be quite a highlight to an otherwise mediocre or even great game experience too, and as you always do it in such an entertaining manner, it makes these videos something that i return to every now and then and recommend to friends who enjoy discussing these sorts of things. Even if you and Seal seem to be in disagreement about Space Quest 3, thanks for another passionate and enjoyable video looking at memorable and nostalgia inducing games from the early years!
@GeorgGreat_GameReviews
@GeorgGreat_GameReviews 2 года назад
As always, Thank You! :) It's always interesting to see what the developers say about their games (those Post Mortems are a blast, for example), although their perspective is so much different from the players that to them playing games (especially their own games) is practically a different experience alltogether. That part about the developers intentionally "worsening" the game is intended as a jokey red herring, tbh (^_^'). I honestly don't even think that the devs were bitter or didn't want to work on a game - it just comes across this way due to how the game is made (at least it does so to me). I'm sorry about being so distant - it's just that I can barely keep up with my close friends and relatives, while working and making those videos in the free time, which is why I pretty much don't use social media, chats and stuff like that... If only I had more time :_(
@RathaWynter
@RathaWynter 2 года назад
@@GeorgGreat_GameReviews The way you cut the video definitely made it seem plausible that the intent was to make some kind of commentary on game development by the dev team with all that was going on within the game. It was fun that you leaned into it a bit! Ive not seen too many developer breakdowns for adventure games, but it would be fun to read/watch some videos that went into detail on the challenges they faced and what they were hoping to accomplish. Not to mention the discussion about how some of those games have taken on a life of their own in the hearts of fans even so many years later. Seems there would be lots of good stories to tell! And no worries about not being in the chats very often. If you've got a lot of family and friend obligations and interests to tend to, then taking the time you need for those is whats important! Its good enough to know that you're still out there doing your thing, though the conversations were always a bunch of fun. : )

Oh absolutely! There's definitely tons of interesting stuff to explore in that area.... and indeed not a lot of people delve into adventure games like they do other genres: channels like Matt Barton (who did about 400+ rare interviews with the developers of old PC games), Stop Skeletons from fighting (with his Past Mortem series - not to be confused with the GDC Post Mortems :D), The Gaming Muse does an incredible job with her "There is not Team Silent" series and many more, like Ars Technica and Did you know gaming. But yeah, I struggle to think of one that is just adventure game focused. :\ And man, thank you so much for understanding! It means a lot :_) And it was fun!

Another fantastic video, mate. This game would most likely frustrate me endlessly, but I can appreciate its aesthetic and art. Making something that looks that great using so few colors is truly an impressive feat. @GeorgGreat_GameReviews
@GeorgGreat_GameReviews 2 года назад
Thanks! :) Yeah, the intention was definitely there (since you can use the mouse to move around), however it is one of those weird transitional games, in which they... sort of couldn't figure out how to design an interface around mouse control :\ It's like you still need to use the keyboard, but hey you can also click around to move the character... except the pathfinding is so bad he gets stuck constantly. So yeah, it's not really an option to play it with a mouse :P

The older AGI Sierra games basically operated at half resolution (each pixel was actually two pixels wide, so you played at 160x200) even though the background were vector drawn and filled (I was playing in a Hercules monitor the resolution was like 720x348 and it looked super crisp, and for some reason the parser paused the game like the newer games), so I knew the engine was able to handle it, but they had ugly EGA/VGA graphics for some unknown reason. That's why this game looked more detailed even though it was the same screen mode - it just didn't have weird fat pixels.

With adventure games having a renaissance it really makes you think, why hasn´t these games gotten a remaster or a modern day sequel. My guess is that perhaps the Kings Quest game from 2015 was a test run to see if people where up to getting some old Sierra games. But if the game didn´t sell well enough future remastering of their other properties might have been cancelled. Which is a pitty would love to see this games series along with their other games get a remaster proper graphic, voice acting etc etc. Sure game play would have to be changed a bit since the old spelling out your actions wouldn´t work here.

Thank you, my friend! Your comment reminds me that, when I was starting out, one of the things I wanted to achieve with the videos is to create a bridge of sorts to those older games. My initial logic was: if I were to highlight the aspects of those games that are legitimately great, it would make it easier for new players to appreciate them. They would know where to look, essentially. It's like with older movies or classic literature - it takes a certain amount effort to start enjoying them, so maybe I could take away some of that effort with my videos. I don't really know whether I did a good job of that or, more importantly, if I still care, tbh. Right now the only thing I truly care about in terms of those videos is... the fun I have when making them ^_^

Finally saw this after it was released for a year... I couldn't agree more with Georg's analysis of all 3 games to this point: Space Quest II is SEVERELY underrated, and I think it's the best of those first 3. And Space Quest III I found to be a general disappointment. The later games got better for a bit (Space Quest 5 was fan-TAST-ic), but #3 felt sloppy. It went from a focused narrative when escaping the garbage scow to almost this anthology of great-to-ok moments that didn't hang together. The overall story actually falls apart when you just happen upon the hidden message in the arcade game that you have no reason to look for. They really should have gone back to the drawing board with this, kept the garbage scow and the terminator bits, and rebuilt everything else from the ground up.

It's not a bad game - it has its charm and personality, as well as good aspects... But I just didn't like it that much, personally. At the end of the day this is just my subjective opinion about a work of art - and on this subject it's ok to have difference of opinion :D

Nah, man -- I still gotta check out the Monkey Island reviews, but I think his review of Space Quest 3 is right on the money. I REMEMBER playing Space Quest 2 and being absolutely transported as a kid. Everything he said about the puzzles in that game was correct. I then went back some time later and played Space Quest 1, and while I didn't find it quite as good, I had a pleasant experience. But I remember urgently waiting for and getting to play SP3. And it just feeling like this glossy... meh. The jokes took up a bigger part of the narrative but weren't any better (except for the Terminator), the tension from #2 was gone, there's no real reason why you're helping out The Two Guys and you just happen on their message by mistake... Georg is right on the money, IMO. There are so many great Sierra games both before and after this, so many great space quest games. But Space Quest 3 was not their finest hour by far.
