A playthrough of the 1992 CD-ROM rerelease of Sierra On-Line's 1991 graphic adventure for PCs running Dos, Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers.
Space Quest IV is my absolute favorite of the six games in the series. All of them are quite good, but this one was as close to a perfect adventure game as I've ever played. Not because of its puzzles (which are good, but not Sierra's best by a long shot), but because of its writing, personality, and its style. The writing alone is worth playing it for - it feels almost like a lost sequel to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (yeah, they channel Douglas Adams' humor THAT well) in how twisted, insane, and absolutely brilliant it can be.
There aren't many games as utterly gripping for their entire length as this one was the first time I played it, and it hasn't lost any of its shine in the 25 years since it was released. There's a very good reason that this game was given away by PC manufacturers for years as a showpiece for multimedia PCs: it looks and sounds incredible, highlighting a ton of skill, talent, and money all put to good use in proving the merits of the CD-ROM format for gaming.
Like most of Sierra's adventures from 1990 through around 1994, the backdrops are all hand-painted, the musical score is some of Sierra's best (Mark Seibert and Ken Allen are well known by the company's fans because of the sheer quality and quantity of their output), and it's fully voice acted, effectively elevating the entire experience above anything that would've been possible on floppy disc. I mean, it features Gary Owens as the narrator. Gary Owens! If you don't know the name, look him up. You know who he is, even if you don't know you know. He was in EVERYTHING. And his tone is as bombastic, condescending, and sarcastic as you'd only dreamed before when reading the on-screen text. He's definitely a major highlight of the whole experience.
But then, given that the game was cutting edge in terms of tech, and that it only missed the title of having a record-sized budget by about a year and a half (King's Quest V actually hit that landmark figure first, but both had budgets of about $1M USD), and that it was so well written and designed made it a sure-fire hit before it was ever released. In all honesty, as much as I adore KQ5, this is a far better game in just about every respect. And God, is it funny. There is nothing else like having Gary Owens tell you after you've been killed that, "[w]e're glad you could play SQIV. As usual, you've been a real pantload."
So, if you've read this far, you can probably tell that I'm a big fan. And if what I've said hasn't managed to convince you, I doubt anything else that I could say would.

It's completely mental, and completely brilliant. It's one of Sierra's all-time best games - adventuring doesn't really get much better than Space Quest IV.

*_"Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers"_* for *_MS-DOS_* . This is my favorite game in the *_"Space Quest"_* series. It offers the same level of great humor and gameplay that we all know and love with cheesy voice acting as the icing on this already well baked cake... and the late Gary Owens ( *_"We're glad you can play 'Space Quest IV!' As usual, you've been a real pantload!"_* ). I remember just being in complete awe with this installment in the series with just the voice acting alone as a kid. And those VGA graphics... They look better than the VGA remake of *_"SQ1"_* ! No more strange color choic- except for that eyesore of a rainbow background when time traveling (Man, Roger looks like he's seeing some sh** ). POSITIVES • *Great Graphics* (For 1991/92, these graphics were mind-blowing. While it looks dated today, it still also manages to not look completely ugly. Everything is lush and has a ton of detail... minor JPEG compression aside) • *Good Music* (While the game doesn't have the largest number of song in the history of gaming, what it *_does_* have is rather easy on the ears. My favorite track is against the final boss.) • *Hilarious Humor* (Good god, the previous installments were pretty funny. But, *_this_* game is ridiculously funny. From that *_"Leisure Suit Larry"_* in-joke, several of the lines when interacting with the environment or even *_Roger_* himself [HAND ICON: *_"Hey! Keep your hands off yourself!"_* ], or *_"Radioshock"_* , etc. It cracked me up as a kid and I still laugh a bunch when playing this game today. It's probably one of the funniest games I've ever played.) • *_"It's That Classic 'Sierra' Gameplay That You Know and Love"_* (Like 90% of their games, the name of the game is to find objects in the environment that help you progress in the game, further the plot, or even just for some funny bits of humor like reading the discount software in the *_"Galleria Mall"_* . Using the same mechanics as *_"Space Quest III"_* , *_Roger_* can Walk, Speak to people, Touch stuff, Smell and Lick things (Even though it is never required in the game), or look in his Inventory to use items from there in order to solve puzzles. Typical 90s Point-&-Click gameplay. Thankfully, for the most part, the puzzles in the game are easy to figure out and are very interesting. Here's some examples: • 😎 *_"Hey, Kids! Need to buy things, but you got no cash? Just get a blonde wig, a dress, and your future wife's ATM card. And disguise yourself for the face recognized ATM to successfully 'Clean It Out!' "_* • *_"Lasers in your way? Light up a cigar and blow smoke from it to see your way through them."_* • *_"Can't get a job at a fast-food joint...? Just get some pants, you idiot! What are you!? Donald Duck!?"_* And also like other *_"Sierra"_* games, your playthroughs pretty much stem from *_"How many puzzles can you solve?"_* First timers are definitely going to get stuck in a few areas (😡 Like outrunning the *_Sequel Police_* in the mall... Oh wait... That's everyon-), veterans can beat it in less than 2 hours. Smiling and laughing at every attempt at humor along the way.) NEGATIVES • 🤬 *_"STOP SHOOTING ME, YOU STORMTROOPER LOOK ALIKES!!"_* ( *I. HATE. THIS PART!!* What you have to do is get *_Roger_* to avoid the blasts from the *_Sequel Police's_* phasers. Simple, right? Well, good luck with *THAT* because not only is floating around wonky, but those lasers are *RIDICULOUSLY* fast and will be *right* on you if you don't leave the screen *IMMEDIATELY* . And this will happen to you over & over & over & over & over & over & over *& over & over & over* *_& OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!_* [Groans] Even the developers themselves think that this part of the game was their biggest failure and they felt bad for all of the poor souls (like *_Past Me_* ) that spent *HOURS* on this one part of the game, only to rage quit it and skip straight to *_"SQ5"_* . And let me tell you. If even the developers consider a certain part of a video game their biggest mistake, then you just *_know_* that you are going drive yourself into insanity over it. And that's just horrible. Final Rating: 7.9/10 Problems aside, this game is excellent. It's certainly a game to be remembered by many *_"Sierra"_* fans. Give it a go (and get yourself something to cope with that stupid *_Sequel Police_* chase).

Always found it awesome that Gary frickin' Owens did the narration. I still think The Spinal Frontier is my overall favorite, though. Thank you. Thank you. Thank YOU! Thank you! Thank you...

Was it just me, or were the puzzles in this game extremely difficult?

All of the Quest games were that way. Makes it last a long time and feel like you are really putting in the work for a journey in these old games. I distinctly remember writing charts and code systems to solve puzzles/navigate in these types of games. They were BRUTAL. Sometimes really cheap too, unfortunately (puzzles with NO direction, like needing a random item that seems useless or is near impossible to discover).

I first got to play this on their '97/'98 (?) collection and couldn't get further than the first Xenon area. Our comp was running fast even for the time it was rereleased, so the guardian robot or whatever it was showed up every 10 seconds to obliterate poor Roger. My SQ experience didn't include a part 4, sadly.

Mike-Brews I had a similar problem. I had played the disk version on my Tandy in 16-color, and I was super excited when we got a Pentium in 1995 to play the CD version, until I figured out that the speed broke the game. I did eventually figure out to disable the CPU cache in the bios and it slowed the computer way down and let it work properly. Funny now thinking that a 75mhz CPU was too fast at one point

I was 9 playing this game and thought it was vaguely frightening. I also don't remember the commentary on everything. My dad must have turned that off or I just have a crap memory.
