Lyla Parker was particularly interesting to keep track of. She showed up as an assistant asking for a screwdriver and wrench (gee I wonder why) at cargo. After being denied these tools, she walks away... to find a screwdriver on the floor in the lobby! She took it, and a cargo tech gave her a wrench as well. Lyla shows up occasionally touring other departments, and successfully makes it onto the escape shuttle, where she burns to death horribly.
I'm not generally mad at new players. Just griefers intent on wrecking the station or causing madness, or generally being assholes. New players are the lifeblood. However, a flood of new players intent on wrecking the station and ruining everyone's fun is absolutely miserable. It's like hipsters becoming interested in your local bar.
I see why greytide is shit, but wouldnt assistant being the ideal position to learn the ropes? You could help out everywhere while having 0 responsibility.
It's a double edged sword, most players know better than to trust assistants since a lot of people play them for the sole purpose of not really 'helping' anyone. So people who really use the role to assist/learn have a stigma to overcome. If you actually have interest in learning a job on the station then going to that department and asking if they need any help is a good place to start. Just remember this IS a paranoid death box where anyone can be out to kill you so if people seem untrustworthy it's, well, part of the game. Just don't be that grey who runs around not saying anything trying to learn on your own, you'll find life on the station very un-fun, being social is the first key on the path of the robust.
Nope, people have already stated why. If you want to learn a job. You want to go Botany, or Cargo Tech. I might be biased in my opinion, as I play the boss of Cargo every single round (Quartermaster) But I think Cargo Tech is the best job for learning, as you learn how to use your inventory, interact with objects and learn a lot about how general rounds actually play out as Cargo can generally be important to saving the station. Good news is, you won't be playing cargo alone so there's no real pressure.
That would imply that the vast majority of assistants haven't already mastered every job. They just play assistant because greytiding is the most fun a girl can have without rolling antagonist.

Actually, that's not true: this isn't "just another day" since the AI reports at round start "enemy communications intercepted". So any action by the players to counter the traitor's action (like turning off the PDAs) is meta.
Depends highly upon what server you play. Turning off a PDA before any PDA bombing is pretty poor form, and removes the point of a PDA bomb. After all, it's meant to be fun for both the antag and the crew.
I feel like i would love this game, but i'm scared after hearing the player base is toxic when it comes to new players. Any Tips for a possible new assistant (heard assistant is for new players who need to learn the ropes)? Also how long is a round on average? don't wanna start a game just before having to leave for something.
Depends on the server. Some can be 20 minutes some can be over 3 hours. Technically speaking assistant is for learning the game. But it also has the rep of being the griefer job. People who dont want to learn the game will steal shit and fight randos in the hall until they get banned. Thus the toxic reaction to "new" players Id pick up a role in cargo or botany and use that to learn the ropes of the game. They are simple jobs. If a bit repetitive, but they will teach you how to do a lot of the more basic stuff. Like grabbing things and how to combine items. But honestly, my best advice is just to play the game and learn the ropes over time. You may get murdered a few times but as long as your not actively ignoring your job, or causing problems as a non antagonist you are generally speaking pretty safe from getting banned.
I've done a few rounds as an assistant. everyone seemed nice and helpful for the most part, but then the random shit started happening. Between the space sharks and death matches that included Mortal Kombat on string guitar, I was just trying to learn more stuff. I should probably get a mouse for this thing.
I'd also go for hippy station as when you mess up Noone cares. They also have mentors which really helped me to learn the game. And you can also message me too
Sigefreadthebulmunk the best most effective job you can not fuck up in is being a janitor cause if you literally fuck up doing that then I’m just gonna be disappointed but what can I say I’m a viscera cleanup pro. And I take pride in cleaning up the station no matter how messy it gets as I do my job well.
I played SS13 for a couple years but I could never muster the courage to play anything higher than engineer. I was a QM after our own QM decided to declare war on the station using weaponry and a delivery bot as a mount but that's it. There just seems to be a lot of pressure on doing your job well.
Yeah. TBH, you should just go assistant. Then give yourself AA - then do whatever. That's what I do, when I want to be HoP (But I don't want tons of *bwoinks* because of this or that, or because I am not officially the HoP, so I don't have to do my job properly).
What's wrong with new people joining the game? I mean sure with an influx of new people, there's bound to be some issues. But in the end isn't it better that more people can learn to play the game? And potentially support it?
I think it's more a running joke with beginners showing up for one game and latejoining into assistant. The ones who end up learning and becoming decent players are always welcomed, I think.
New people are good, I admitted new blood is essential for a game like this otherwise it devolves into a creepy server. However, when its lagged out because there are 40 assistants on board, and all the assistants have done zero research on how to play the game and instead just steal everything they can, fight to the death in the hallways, etc, it makes it imminently un-fun

I'd had a discussion with a few deep seated, shall we say, bitter-veterans of the station and they said that people had found a way to mob-in. And now we're stuck with a population, at least for the time being, until we can begin to banhammer/weed out the weaker ones. Then again. I'm glad they have the ability to close the gates as it were. Station-flooding is most miserable. However, CRUSHING THE GREY-TIDE is always enjoyable
I only had a one time experience with being a traitor. Very unfortunate. The people in the server had a riot over the captain being a 🅱️aggot and I got killed during the rioting. I still laugh when I remember the bartender getting dragged out of his business and beat in front of everyone, only because he gave a little bit support to sec.
It feels like every time you get traitor(once in a blue moon, sadly), things just always fall into place for you D: I get traitor, and I get things like, "kill a miner" as HoP, or "hijack the shuttle" And I'm like, i can't do those! I mean. Statistically, the miner is going to die, sure. XD Also, mechs look fun. I should try and take up robotics and make me a mech .. ... ... yeah, I'll probably never get the resources because of bad miners or cargonians D:
You usually can tear down enough of the station without getting caught to make several mechs, and you should have enough metal on hand to make just one mech. Now you need mining if you want any of the more complex ones. Remember a well played robotics lab is mineral hungry, and will scavenge anything for their hunger. FLESH IS WEAK! Also I love to basically do a Dr. Wily RP when I am traitor. Making a robot army, and hijacking the AI tend to be my priorities. Haven't got traitor as that in a few months.

people who play for years as only assistants (not just people starting off as assistant to learn a job), who contribute nothing to the station, go around constantly breaking laws, harming people, so on and soforth, round after round. Basically being an antagonist without being an antagonist. Some servers dont do anything against them. Other servers ban them outright.
The server is found on the tg wiki. Just looked up SS13 TG Wiki and on there is a link to two servers. You will see Basil and Sybil. Both are played a lot these days.
DEATH TO THE GREY-TIDE! In all seriousness though, tuber-tides kill small communities, especially when its done in a way that encourages shit-tier gameplay. People making guides or leading folks to the game like . . well, Lord Mandalore's Videos, that's something different. That actually encourages engagement with the community and building toward a sustainable future for what has and likely will always be a niche game. That being said: I hate grey tiders. Often enough a tuber-tide brings them on en-masse. Sometimes its another issue, like reddit choosing a magic page of the day and lo' the ss13 community is highlighted and another tide begins. So, every so often one of my favorite little games becomes unplayable and I have to start killing random people and ranting like a madman. Welcome to the aftermath of a 'tuber-tide'.
BlackPantsLegion I understand that but that doesn't mean it doesn't bother me. Alot of people who have been gaming for a while have been hit with a "tide" and you didn't do anything assholeish I just felt bad for being a part of it.
its okay though. See, out of every tide there's a handful who see the error of their ways, contribute and stick around. It's just miserable to play during a tide. A lot of folks who found this game through some horseshit college or some podcast trying to act like they know what indie games are, or some meme, end up staying and making the game genuinely a far greater thing. You got hella lucky this round with that id from HOP that had all access and no idea why he gave it to you and no one reporting you for having that power fist thingy which I don't see on my server. (I play Yogs) Shit is fucked here, everyone's power gaming like crazy it seems. Also, use the PDA Bomber when you have you're target in sight. Makes all the difference later to ensure they are dead. Welp, I play QM/CT in literally 99% of the rounds I play, over the past 3 years. And I play this game a lot. Yeeepppppp, I love playing cargo that much. If you're good enough then a good 80% of the time, during Rev and Gang rounds, if Sec can implant you and keep you safe, you can order a good 40 or so implant Crates over the duration of the round and give decent sec teams good chances of success too. /tg/ is a tough station to play on. You cant fuck up as a traitor because people will murder you in an instant. With or without notice, it seems. Always appreciative on tips.
I don't like that attitude, I think its sorta elitist. People don't know everything about the game right off the bat, a "bandwagoning greytider" could become "A cool regular" and genuinely improve the player base, given the resources to learn the game. Now I will not question that some just troll, and yea you are right, fuck those guys, or worse, they don't have the patience to even play right but still grey tide, yea they can fucking go, get banned even. More pop in SS13 isn't bad, more idiots who can't RP, or hell, even bother to learn anything over a day or two, are fucking awful and get perma'd
I just get tired of the people who have been banned on every server showing up to this one to get banned. It happens. Had it on FTL-13 last weekend. Im fine with new people, Love it when theres new blood and I do admit that. However, I hate it w hen it comes to th e expense of the game.

New players are fine. It's a swarm of new players joining at once and just going around griefing and wrecking shit that's a problem. Just look at how much they straight-up broke for no reason.
1. Killing the Grey-Tiders is not me hating new players. The game needs blood to survive. It needs new people to survive. However, after each "Tide" there is a problem, which leads me to 2. 2. People who have no idea what they're doing other than "Wow, I can kill people and cause chaos" and proceed to do so - these same people electing then to brick servers when they get banned. 3. This is revenge upon them for what they started. Grey tiders wrecking everything for no reason, shooting/killing people for no reason, all trying to emulate what they saw a streamer/tuber do and not realizing that person was likely on a private server where the rules are quite different.
