Fairing reentry on the ViaSat-3 mission was the hottest and fastest we’ve ever attempted. The fairings re-entered the atmosphere greater than 15x the speed of sound, creating a large trail of plasma in its wake

Is the craziest thing tell me about space is how beautiful it looks but how it would kill you if you tried to touch it😂😂😂 hilarious

wondering if that bright dot to the left of the plasma trail is the other fairing

Yeah it probably is, thanks for pointing that out cuz i would have never noticed it

Purely aerodynamics, while not impossible for it to flip 180°, its very unlikely duebto its shape.

The cameras POV is actually Master Cheif.. he typically reenters atmosphere by sheilding himself with a piece of scrap

would you survive in a space suit riding it down like a surf board?

Mach-15? Anout 5 km/s or 18000 km/h ?

Yup, that's what speed is need to reach orbit, and since this video shows the fairings fall back to earth they will speed up until they hit their terminal volocity and then begin to slow down.

So, theoretically, to return to Earth from space you only need a big "space surfboard".

Absolutely beautiful. I’m in bed and this is the first time they’ve been able to capture footage like this that wasn’t CGI. Usually you’d only get this above a capture all because of the shape and the necessity for a parachute, being able to show this perspective wouldn’t be an option. I know it sounds crazy, but wouldn’t it be amazing if you could actually ride one of these things down back to work in an EVA suit with heat protection!? I’m just curious if anyone has actually considered that. It’s basically a gigantic heat shield you could leap from. You could lie on your back and look at the plume behind and then just leap from it when you were back fully in atmosphere.😁

Alot of tampering in the video. This looks nothing like reentry from the ground view. Wasn't blue like the falcon 9. Just looked like a meteorite reentry. Why? No cool blue swirling or weird anomalies. Or did everyone forget already?

@@CharlottethedonkeyHow on earth did you see the fairing reentry from the ground if it's over the ocean?

Is base jumping not dangerous or thrilling enough for you? How many years do you think it will take for Red Bull to be willing to finance this kind of stunt? .. I'd still watch that.

What keeps it from rolling and catching the inside and obviously tearing it apart?

Aerodynamic and dynamic stability, Very similar to Starship's re-entry mode (in that case controlled via the fins).

An astronaut can theoretically strap himself in the center for this fairing and survive the reentry. Silver Surfer.
