Well, unless you have been living under a rock for the past week it will be no surprise that SpaceX used Mechazilla to flawlessly catch Booster 12 out of the air. We already now see SpaceX's Frantic Push to Move Forward with Starship! The Booster is back at the production site, while new Version 2 vehicles appear. Indeed Big Changes Are Coming with Version 2, and we’ve learned and seen so much more around this epic catch event. It has been an absolutely epic week for SpaceX in many ways such as the incredible spectacle breaking a new SpaceX record with Falcon Heavy and Europa Clipper. Then we also have some great new information from VAST and their mini Space Station. So let's jump right into it.

Unlike the Falcon 9 boosters the heavy booster is not firing its engines on reentry, as it's far more sturdy. But I guess that could be the reason why some engines had warped nozzles? I mean, seeing the engine section glowing during most of the time of the reentry will cause a lot of heat stress there. And yeah, optimizing fuel load is surely something for later. First let's get some real life data about how much fuel is actually used for a launch. 😉

The degree of precision of that Landing cannot be possibly overstated. In retrospect, to me, there's a certain sense to be made regarding the alignment pins not being necessary. Since the landing rails have the ability to adjust the position of the landing points along its length, SpaceX knows exactly where those need to be on the rails. Since that's an established reference point, they can adjust the booster's position to be exactly where it needs to be to come down on the OLM in the correct orientation without the alignment pins. This bears out by the seemingly accurate positioning of the booster QD.

Super heavy booster was so clean, no soot on the outside. Hard to believe it had been to the edge of space and back. All down to using methalox fuel combination. Stunning success.

This has to be one of the greatest feats involving an actual booster, since they became reusable. I was so happy for all at Spacex that I actually burst into tears. Emotional or what? I feel so silly😂. I’m glad the exterior damage happened in flight, so is probably easily solvable, rather than by slight collision with the tower. Marcus’s various videos have been great. The chat between Marcus, Fraser, Scott was really enjoyable and informative. I can’t wait till launch six. Here’s hoping it will be even more successful, with an even better catch and a no tile burn through on the starship. 👍👍

I was very skeptical of the chopsticks booster catch thing, seemed far fetched and likely to end in a massive explosion and destruction of stage 0. Obviously it will be great to see more catches and especially relatively quick relaunches but seeing this work makes me think the likelihood of the bigger moon/mars project just got an order or two of magnitude better. Compared to the engineering feat of this, fuelling one or several of these boosters up and using it to get a load of supplies to the moon seems actually fairly straight forward. Can't wait to see test footage of starship (re)entry skimming through the thin martian atmosphere.

@737smartin
@737smartin 2 дня назад
Don’t get it twisted… the delays likely DO slow SpaceX’s plan. They press on as best as feasible, but things might go faster if they could launch at their own pace. Had flight 5 gone up six weeks ago, the resulting findings might have resulted in changes implemented before flights 6 & 7. As is, they pressed on with build-out and testing WITHOUT being able to incorporate possible flight 5 findings. Now decisions must be made… launch without possible improvements, which may accelerate evolution or delay a bit more to incorporate new findings. Either way, progress is likely slowed.

@@stargalacticfederation NASA doesn't have the power to authorise flights, other than within the narrow scope of NASA missions... and even then, the FAA is still involved (they had to grant a waiver for the HERA launch due to Falcon being temporarily grounded). But the FAA (not NASA) gave approval for up to five flights (including IFT5) as long as they don't change the mission profile too much.. it's unlikely they'll use all of them under those conditions, but certainly IFT6 is likely to be covered.
