Soon the entire planet will be connected thanks to Elon Musk SpaceX Starlink. Testing of SpaceX Starlink (DTC) Direct-To-Cell service started testing yesterday which will soon provide INTERNET ANYWHERE!
As long as you have a view of the sky, you will have internet even if there is no WiFi or cell towers in the area. No special phone is required! Your unmodified phone will be able to directly connect with SpaceX Starlink satellites providing a text connection and soon allowing for voice and video calls as well as access to the internet from the most remote locations on the planet!
Will this save lives?
Will this provide peace of mind to adventures that love the great outdoors?
Is this a OFF-GRID must-have service?

as a lvl 3 tower climber that has build these systems for a long time.. this shit can't be safe.. The amount of direct power our phones would need to shit out to TX to the satellite is not the sort of thing you want up against your head all the time.. buckle up and enjoy your cataracts at the very least, and then there's the fear that in an effort to give this feature to more phones they will inevitably cut corners and just make it always on and at higher than ideal power levels to artificially inflate the idea that it works better than it does, so your burning RF into your pocket beside your reproductive organs all day. We will see a spike in people with eye damage in the coming 20 years, and then those people will exhibit higher than usual cancer rates.. mark those words now, and start adding shielding in your homes attic..

As a person cruising around the Pacific side of Mexico full time where cellular coverage is very limited, I think this is a tremendous improvement for providing another communication source in the event of an emergency. Of course providing voice and data use would be even better. Direct to satellite communication via my cell phone would be a much better solution than my archaic and buggy IridiumGo! and the limited functionality of my InReach Mini 2.

I am a cross country truck, driver, and through the years. I have tested many different companies and honestly Verizon has the most coverage. Definitely not the cheapest, but they always had the most. I was hoping Elon was going to come out with his phone and I was going to get one to try, yes I have been an apple guy for years but honestly I imagine Elon has a better thought process on the future of technology than Apple, so I was still looking forward to his phone. Also I don’t want to run many different phones honestly, if there could be one phone that did it all, maybe I have to switch to T-Mobile I don’t know only time will tell I do have Starlink at the house, and I also have one in the Philippines

vinniegillotti9347. I'm in Australia and Telstra is our best coverage provider. Some of the others are not much better than smoke signals. A while ago when I heard that EM was bringing out his own phone and sat provider, I couldn't wait to get one. Now I'm just hanging back to see what happens. I can't see our Telstra (which is more expensive than all the others, because it IS the best) not getting some sort of deal from EM and then screwing us some more.

Here in Brazil we have a lot of deadzones on roads and starlink DTC would be a solution, we have a lot of celltowers with links provided by satellite (even starling) on rural areas, but still dead zones. I don’t expect anything over 3G speeds, but just enough to maybe keep a map working and allow to do a emergency call would be enough

This sounds like great news!! I moved from Comcast’s/Xfinity internet services to Starlink Satellite Internet and we are MUCH MORE Happier with the speed of service and virtually no buffering at all (once I had moved the dish to its permanent spot on the roof). Even though the speed test say they are slower than what I was receiving via Comcast cable internet I can assure you the user end experience is much faster. I did also add my own modem so I can choose what kinds of internet usage gets priority and believe this helps a lot. I use an ASUS GT-AX11000 PRO and it has many great features for those that have a little more advanced knowledge of computers but don’t let that intimidate you as there are so many useful videos online like many of yours @JCristina!! @@yamahagrand I couldn’t agree with you more. However, who regulates the regulators that are applying inappropriate political bias that is contrary to the common good? When those biases are demonstrated in adversely impact advancements something has to give. Using a standard phone to establish a signal at the satellite's altitude is impossible. Three decades ago, we utilized the 450 MHz band in mobile phones, as it proved optimal for covering extensive distances, particularly with widely spaced antennas. Moreover, achieving longer distances demanded a considerable wattage, accompanied by high radiation levels from the phones. I'm curious about the wattage required for data communication to satellites. Contemporary satellite phones feature substantial antennas, and it's worth noting that Starlink satellites orbit at a similar altitude to Leo satellites.

@@jcristina For something over 5 years now, if you have asked Google Maps to route you someplace with no cell service, it will ASK YOU if you want to download maps for the dead area. Or you can manually select an area, at any time, and cache the map data. So Google Maps can and will provide navigation without cell service--if you have asked it to. Other mapping apps are plentiful, that also cache maps, even very large maps, to allow GPS navigation, not just location finding, on Androids.

In the middle of the Atlantic ocean on my sailboat heading N to Bermuda there is no cell service to get GPS coordinates from cell tower triangulation or router triangulation. No problem. My Apple watch and iPhone can be setup to bypass triangulation and talk to the GPS satellites directly. You just have to set up your watch to do a GPS “cold start” downloading the ephemeris GPS data and constellation data ( approximately 30 GPS birds up there) to your watch initially taking bout’ 4 or 5 minutes. Your done watch GPS data comes directly from the birds in real time. I do it all the time.

Just because the signal is coming from a satellite, it doesn't mean it is a lot of power. Its simply a directional beam antenna pointed down, hence the cones of coverage. Don't need a lot of power to talk from the ground to satellite. The high gain antenna allows the same devices to be used, and compensates for the distance between them. The cell phones don't need to send max power to use them either.

I love it, especially for those in rural and undeveloped areas around the world. It'll be a giant leap for those folks who want connectivity like many of us already have, such as my 40 to 120 mbps landline internet. Will I change to satellite Internet any time soon? Probably not, since it will likely be more expensive. But, for many, it'll be a God Send.

This would be good for making an SOS of MAYDAY MAYDAY call if you have an injury or mishap in an empty wild area. Walking on the hills or becoming disorientated in woodland areas. Be good for small boat sailors on the coast and oceans. Mapping would be good too with your location and exit routes.

Elon being a major player in EVs, solar power, battery storage, Neuralink, SpaceX and Twitter as well as being one of the richest people in the world, he can pretty much control the world. Especially if he'll now have access to everyone who signs up to this. Yes, it can help people out, but it can be used nefariously too.

Assuming your existing phone can work on PCS (not all phones physically can use those bands and channels) then the phone will still need to have Starlink added as a roaming service provider. That will probably need to be done manually, as cellular providers stop providing OTA upgrades generally after two years. And there will probably have to be an OS or app upgrade, to tell the phone to use--and pay-- for Starlink roaming. Not quite automatic coverage. Although 2025 phones may have it built in, and an incentive to upgrade phones.

Absolutely amazing tech! I wonder what they will do with pricing, if anything. Voice communications will be interesting. Will it always grab the satellite over a tower if you are outdoors? Will it be able to switch from tower to satellite to tower and vice versa with no detectable difference? If Musk's companies are in the game I have no doubt it will come to fruition, just not as fast as he or us would like. Great work and thank you for a great channel.

I live in a mountainous rural area and have no cell service on my road, so it would be nice to have a cell connection once again, especially for emergency use. I lose my power and landline phone several times a year from falling trees. It would be nice to have radio & TV reception too, but that doesn't seem as likely. The bottom line will be the additional cost.

When you say, “GPS connectivity”, are you referring to maps? As a cellphone GPS chip engineer, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the phone listens directly to the GPS (actually it’s GNSS) satellites and computes the position, velocity, and time of the phone with or without access to a cellular network. Without a cellular network connection, the initial availability of GNSS may be delayed by 1 to 2 minutes. The maps are a different story. While they could be kept resident on the phone, they are not. I’m not sure how much space it would take for your state, for instance, but you would also have to download map updates at some frequency.

While your phone won't know the difference between ground and sat links but a human will. Cell towers are instant transmission while sats will have the lag that comes with distance that the signal has to travel. It won't be as bad as to GEOS located sats but it still will happen. As for warnings about radiation, our portable/base unit sat phone had a warning label on the front of the antenna section warning not to stand in front of it when in use. The phone looked like a laptop with the number keys like a laptop and the antenna being the part where the screen would have been. And on the Comm Car for the President there was a warning sign as soon as you got on the roof of it. There there was an output of 3kW of RF signal so it could cook you like a microwave.

I have used GPS on my iPhone on airplane mode while on a commercial jet plane. The phone knows where it is (I have to have a window seat and hold the phone up to the window.) You can only see the “base map” so you can’t see streets. You can also use a gps app and get location, altitude and speed. This works on planes that have no internet access. So, other than not having a detailed street map, the phone is a proper gps.

as I live the high desert of n/w NM we have many canyons with non existing service & with many hundreds of people working in the oil & gas industry it can be vert dangerous to be out there. I know as I spent a couple decades in it myself. @ 1 point I had the idea of building a network of tethered blimp based antenna areas to allow for service in these type of areas. it could be cheaper in the short term at least. Allowing for the fact that air traffic could avoid hitting the blimps & tethering cables.
