Spain tourism: Thousands protest in Mallorca over cost of living 

Thousands of people flooded the streets of Palma de Mallorca on Sunday to call for limits on tourism in the Spanish resort city.
Anti-tourism activists have staged several protests this year in popular holiday destinations like Barcelona, Malaga and the Canary Islands, frustrated with increased tourism which they say is driving up the cost of living for residents.
“We are not against the tourists as such, we are against the touristic model,” said protester Alvaro Sanchez.
“We are suffering the consequences of this model because we cannot afford living here. That’s because tourists with (a) higher standard of living, they come here and they higher our standards of living as well,” he added.
In the first quarter of the year, 16.1 million people visited Spain - and increase of 18 per cent compared with the same period last year. Tourism generates 45 per cent of the Balearic islands’ GDP.
