The members of Spandau Ballet tell the story behind the song 'Through The Barricades'. A short documentary by Top 2000 a gogo (Dutch Public TV) from 2014.
Jon Commons so what , I stand by my thoughts, this record in the UK wasn’t given the accolade it deserved when originally released , it has been since though....
I got to see them live a few years ago and this song live is just sublime. I had goosebumps the whole time and the audience was silent as if we were all lost in the song, soaking all of its beauty.
My Dad always said a great song is discovered from thin air, and comes to a songwriter complete, as it were. And it sounds like that's how it came to Gary Kemp. Genius song, I will always love it.
GHOSTED by THE CRUE..... ...keep your eye and ear out for this song Sue...your Dad was right. This song was written and demo'd as a co-write in 15 minutes total...your Dad was right. One fine day his point will be proved with GHOSTED. ACTUALLY written ten years ago. Pulled out last year because I was asked to record a song and release it, having never sang a single song.FACT....let alone recorded and released. One take. Done.
@@suzannetodaro5494 Yes I think that's true too. I write short stories, and when I've got a good one it comes to me complete. I once won £1000, so they must be ok!
Totally agree with you there. This is so powerfull and emotional and a true Spandau classic. Even more so than Gold or True. More of an anthem feel to it. It's definately the boy's best effort, both musically and vocally !!!
My father was a farmers son, my mother a poachers daughter, they were from different sides, my father died in my arms in 2017. This song was played at his funeral.
@@macs7641 I didn't know that. It can't be the same without him. A drummer can be replaced, or a bass player, not so.much a singer. Just to add, there's a huge playlist of decent music on my channel, check it out if ya want. Over n out
@@justmadeit2 New singer is already out. He stayed for only 8 months. Tried to kill himself after working with Gary. Tony didn‘t leave because of money, but because Gary couldn‘t accept the fact that Tony is a different person than he himself is. In the end Tony choose hapiness above the security of being in a famous band.
Money did not divide them, the Kemps wanted to go and do acting in the '90s and left the other guys high and dry. Tony is doing fine on his own, he doesn't need them.
It’s funny, this song always reminded me of World War I. My grandfather had such a troubled relationship with his family. I think it really led my dad to make some very poor choices and join a cult in the 1950s. Anyway, my grandfather was a 16-year-old in trench warfare. Two close relatives killed on the same day. Somehow made it through the barricades. I often wonder what he really wanted to be doing with his time, and about love.
With the Berlin wall falling being one of my first memories, I always thought that was what this song was mostly about. Jesus christ people, I'm not even old. That wasn't even long ago. In the western world. And look where we are now.
Tony Hadley is inmiddels alweer opgestapt en vervangen door een ander. Een vreemd gevoel krijg je dan bij dit verhaal. En echt vrienden worden ze ook niet meer, zo vernam ik ook.
Living you're past life again.. But I always wonder where the band name came from: Spandau Prison in Europe housed many prisoners including World War II Nazi prisoners. When these prisoners were hanged the swinging of the dead body was called the Spandau Ballet. That SS officer did a nice Spandau Ballet at his hanging. Or Even earlier, it references the 1918 German pilots who flew with two Spandau machine guns in place on the aircraft cowling. The guns were said to make the enemy dance when fired at them from above, hence the term "ballet". Me not like..
Well see it as a way to learn a different culture. Basically these clips are from a TV program broadcasted in Xmas week every year, so enjoy these payed for from tax money😉
In the Netherlands they use subtitles, in other countries they dub everything. Imagine an 80 year old German who spent his whole life in the cinema and hasn't got a clue what the voices of say Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy, Meryl Streep sound like.
Tony buggered off again but by all accounts (Gary in a recent interview), things are still ok with them, he still wants to be solo and to follow his personal ventures. They'll be back again.
Tony Hadley is a twat, he won't even admit what the song was written about, he thought everything was about him, thank god he is just an idiot that belongs in the past, he never wrote the song
What a stupid comment! Of course he knew what the song was about. Thank God he was the singer who made this band (and this song!) big. Twat Gary must have regrets now about the way he treated his frontman. Spandau is over because Gary was so stupid to drive Tony out. And Tony is having the time of his life with his own band. Happier than ever because he doesn‘t have to work with Gary anymore!
@@elle37gb31 Yep. Really. Gary is such a twat that even Steve doesn‘t speak to him anymore. Steve and Tony are the only bandmembers who are still friends today.
I liked Spandau Ballet, but I could never take Tony seriously. He looked like Rimmer and sang like a slightly better than average pub singer. Definitely a cracking record though.
Average pop singer? You need to go get your hearing checked, he's one of the best voices of this generation. Probably the best now after Freddie Mercury and George Michael died.
