'Carmen' is a well-known opera presenting a passionate Spanish love story. This Opera was preformed worldwide and is now featured in Israel. Only but here it's been it has been mounted at the bottom of this historical Masada sight. Creating a magical ambiance, unique to this production alone. 2,500 people have been working on this massive cultural production which has been in the works for six months now. Each night there are more than 800 performers and technicians on and off stage, along with 10 live horses and 7 donkeys used in the background in order to contribute to a 19th century setting of Spain.
However, performing an opera in the middle of the dessert has its own complications. The Italian mezzo soprano meant to play Carmen was unable to carry through both acts of the premiere performance due to a sandstorm that took place during rehearsals, therefore, allowing her Israeli mezzo soprano Understudy Naama Goldman to come in and fill the role on stage. In total, six performances of this opera are presented in French to an audience of some 50,000 people including about 3,500 who are international visitors Israel.
