My mother is Mexican and my father is Portuguese, but I grew up speaking Spanish. So now that I’m learning Portuguese, the most difficult thing for me is not confusing the words and the accent. Your videos have helped me improve a lot and hopefully I will have the confidence to speak Portuguese this summer when I visit the Azores. Thank you so much Liz ❤

@@TalktheStreets Olá, Liz! Gosto muito dos teus vídeos! Permite-me uma pequena correção: na palavra "diferente" aqui em Portugal na síliaba "fe" o "e" é pronunciado da mesma maneira que em "te"; não como na sílaba "ren". A tua pronúncia é ótima! 😊

In Timor and I believe in some african countries every vowel is pronounced. In Timor we pronounce rr and initial r like Spanish people do.

Totally agree with you. When I started learning European Portuguese, I took it for granted that its pronunciation is in some way the same as Spanish. Then, I realized I was totally wrong in my assumption. Thank you for shedding more light on the phonological difference between Spanish and Portuguese. Is there a guide on stress rules in portuguese? Appreciate if you could provide the link here. That would help a lot. Your videos are of top quality. Once again, thank you very much, indeed.

In Colombia, South America we say "carro" in Spanish for "car", although of course we would understand "vehículo". Curiously, an older way of pronouncing the letter "r" in Bogotá that people ofvmy grandfather's generation used sounded very similar to the "r" in some Portuguese accents that I've listened to. The "r" sounded almost like a French "r" with a bit of an "h" at the end. The word "carro" sounded something like "carrho". My main problem besides pronunciation seems to be with false cognates where the meanings of words that appear to have the same roots have diverged. Would it be possible to do a You Tube video on those?

Here in Mexico, English is the language that we put more effort into learning. Whenever we visit Brazil, we just talk to Brazilians in English and a lot of times, they ask us to speak Spanish because they can undestand Spanish better than English

I’ve been studying European Portuguese for a little over a year. I am Mexican so my Spanish works against me 100% of the time. I have a good teacher. Its not him, its me. My mind has not accept Portuguese since day one. I keep fighting myself to learn, learn, learn. It’s extremely frustrating to me that after one year of study, I’m still at the same level as I was a year ago.

"¿Dónde estás?” is ordinarily three syllables, not four. It’s pronounced “dondestás.”

Learning to read it is easy; learning to speak it is harder (even with Brazilian Portuguese).

¡Me encantan tus vídeos! As a Spanish speaker I know that I have to work on the vowels and those "s" sounds and of course the "lh" that you mentioned in another video. The fact that Spanish is my first language helps somehow in understanding that words that might look alike have totally different meanings i.e. exquisito vs esquisito. A long story to tell that I fell in love with Portuguese many years ago, and that your videos help me refresh all that I learned. Thanks again for all your insights!
