Learn how to teach your horse the Spanish Walk! In this video, I walk you through the basics of how I approach this, starting on the ground and then moving to under saddle :)
The Spanish Walk is a beautiful movement and fun trick to teach. In my experience, many horses pick this up fairly quickly once they understand what you are asking. Some are more willing than others, and the flexibility and fitness of your horse can also contribute to this.
I hope you have success training the Spanish Walk to your horse! Feel free to comment with questions or share a future video idea 😊
0:00 Lesson Overview
0:28 Phase 1 Lifting The Leg
2:42 Phase 2 Extending The Leg
3:56 Phase 3 Verbal & Finishing Cue
5:32 Phase 4 Lifting The Reins
6:30 Phase 5 Under Saddle
Disclaimers: When riding or working with a horse, I recommend having an equestrian professional present. If a fitness workout is demonstrated in a video and you feel uncomfortable in any way I recommend consulting with a fitness professional.

I’ve started my mare with just me tapping her upper leg with my hand to cue her to “release” her leg to me. Basically she just takes her weight off that leg at first, and I worked from there, to her picking up her foot for me to clean, to now picking up and holding her foot out for me. (and now the weirdo will just hold her foot up whenever she is happy)🤦‍♀️😆Then just yesterday she, very suddenly, gave her birthday present to me, it was that I jumped on bareback and in a halter, (which I rarely do) and after we walked around for a bit my foot grazed her upper leg/elbow area and she “gave” her leg to me which I wasn’t expecting AT ALL. Now I just need to teach her how to do it while walking and I’ll have a Spanish walk no whips used! (not that I have a problem with them if used properly) 😊

Just started teaching my horse Spanish Walk. I’ve never taught it before. She was quick to learn to pick up a foot, but no extension. (Only been doing it two days now). So I needed instruction on how to get her to extend the leg, not just lift it. So THANK YOU for posting this video!! It was very clear and helpful!

I'm 57 and been fortunate to have had some excellent equestrians share their knowledge with me, including of Romany descent. Often I'm asked to never disclose who taught me, and quite often the how as well. I love RU-vid. If I search hard enough I can find excellent passionate equestrians willing to share their knowledge, free to all, no promises of secrets or silence. The way it should be. Instead I get to say 'hell no, pony and I learnt how to do this on RU-vid " Thank you. Great presentation on all counts, style and quality information.

This tutorial was absolutely amazing! My Mare learned to spanish walk in less than 2 weeks! My only complaint is is she will sometimes do when we are learning something new because she knows she gets rewarded but other than that this trick is amazing! I get a lot of positive comments when we do it it's truly a beautiful movement! Thanks for the awesome video!

That is how I taught my mare. She has a tendency to be quite tight in her shoulders and so I taught her this to get her to use her shoulders more and lift and stretch. She had zero difficulty the first time I asked her under saddle she just did it like she already understood. Occasionally she will offer her Spanish walk will I do not want it I have to tell her no not that.

Brilliant video. I thought my older 20yo horse recently to give me each leg by treats, and actually I tried doing it tonight in walk and he got 3 steps of Spanish walk 2 different times. Iv only worked with him total 3 different sessions. 15 mins each. Think he is very quick to learn.. But your video is great will ré teach with the whip. Amazing. He definitely uses one leg more than other at the moment.

Hi Joan, I have recently started watching all of your videos and I find your approach to teaching so informative and calm! I like the way you give examples of a problem with a horse that will actually act out a problem and you show techniques to solve it, such a great way to teach, you also do step by step and pause the video to point it out, so great! Would it be possible to do some videos on leg aids but to show what the legs are doing through the entire movement until you change to the next movement, eg, how often my leg stays on, or in a canter does my outside leg stay behind the girth and it stays there until I transition back to trot and do I squeeze every stride or every 2nd stride etc, no1 does a video on this, I do know what the aids are but I’m not sure on what to do once in the transition up or down to keep the horse travelling, hope this makes sense!

Hi! Thank you! My haflinger and I have been trying this and taking it slowly as you suggested. I agree with the other viewer. I really appreciate your calm demeanor. It helps with learning. I do have a question. Is there another step to help bring the belly up or keep the belly of the horse up while lifting the leg in order to avoid swayback issues? Can't wait to see what other fun videos you create. Thank you!
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 2 года назад
Hi😀 this is a great question. Once your horse learns how to do the Spanish walk you can start to ask them to keep there hind end more Underneath them. when your first teaching the Spanish walk it is normal for your horse not to step forward enough with the hind legs. As the horses practice the movement and his coordination improves he will begin using his hind legs better. As his strength and coordination improves so will his ability to keep his back up. One exercise I have found useful is doing a few steps in Spanish walk then asking your horse to stop and back up before continuing in Spanish walk. This exercise helps the horse to lean to sit back more wile doing the Spanish walk.

Wonderful video! I'm working on teaching my Icelandic to Spanish Walk and this will be super helpful! Question for you, how long/how many sessions did you end up doing with each of your horses to move through the different phases?
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 3 года назад
Hi😊 That’s awesome! Each one of the horse I have work with is unique and takes a different amount of time to understand each phase. On average teaching them to lift their legs is always the fastest and takes me anywhere from one session to a week. I have found that it takes my horses anywhere from a week to 2 months of consistent work three days a week 15 to 20 minute sessions to learn the Spanish walk. It often takes the longest for them to learn how to lift their leg and walk forward as this requires the most coordination.
@DiscoverTheHorse
@DiscoverTheHorse 3 года назад
@@JSHorsemanship Makes total sense, thank you!! The lifting and walking forward is where I have been struggling with my gelding, he will lift it and then look at me, like, that is what you wanted right? :) But I think I just need to keep up the consistency and encourage him to take that step forward each time so the action becomes more obvious.

Great video, thanks! How can I get my horse to lift its front legs a bit higher and stretch them out more? Thanks
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship Год назад
Hi Janine:) I’m glad you enjoyed the video. One thing that has helped me to get my horses lifting there legs higher is - having them place there front foot on a mounting block. I am careful to teach them not to put any weight on the leg that is on the block. Instead I use the block as a target to teach the horse to lift there leg higher and higher. Starting with having them reach for the first step and gradually work there way up. Once they are lifting both legs consistently higher at the block I work out in the open without the block:)

@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship Год назад
It does takes some time and practice for the horse to understand how to bring their leg forward and in front of them:) Most of the time working on leading your horse forward after you ask them to pick up their leg, will help with getting them to extend their leg out in front of them. With horses that are struggling to understand this concept. You can teach them to lift their front leg out and on to a mounting block or another fixed safe object. Doing this can help them learn to extend the leg more forward. Once they are lifting their leg out to the object or target, you can take them away from it and have them begin to lift their leg without it.

Hi Hanna😀 There are a couple things you can do if your horse doesn’t want to lift his leg. 1. Direct your horses head away from the leg you want him to lift encouraging him to take the weight off of the leg you are touching with your whip. Remember to reward even the slightest lift of the leg at the beginning 2. Ask your horse to take a step forward as his leg lifts touch it with the whip and reward him. Continue doing this until you can get your horse to hesitate before taking a step forward keeping his leg up. As with most things in training success depends on how good your timing is. how long it takes really depends on the horse I’ve had some horses pick it up within a couple of weeks time while others took months.

Hi, I actually do not know your name(sorry for that) though I actually follow your videos! I have one request. I do not have a horse but im learning how to trot as I go for horse riding classes. There is a small track for practicing but the problem is that the horse comes out of the track for some reason(I dont know) and it does not want to go inside again and pulls itself away from the track which is quite frustrating at times. I am not able to control the horse there. What can I do so that I can make it trot inside the track and the horse is in my control? Can you please make a video on the same? Again, you control your horses so easily(at least looks easy)! Follow every video of yours! Love from India!
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 3 года назад
Hi😊 Thanks for the video idea. I will add it to my list🐴 There are a few factors that play a role in effectively guiding your horse under saddle. Some of them are your balance, your timing and your horse responsiveness to your aids. Without seeing you it is difficult to give you exact advice. However one thing you can try is making sure your horse is straight and responsive at the walk and then do frequent short transitions to trot. If you would like more help with this I will be offering courses in the near future and video consultations.

Hi there am a fairly new rider too and what she said is right. And I sometimes find he gets distracted, get to know the horse check where his or her attention is by seeing where their ears are pointing. You bring there attention back to the moment by turning them in a circle and then steering them "back on track" to where you want them to be. It takes practice and I cannot always Get it the first time, but listen to her as she seems like the teacher we all wish we had. Good luck and keep at it you will get it.
