I never knew they moved the spare access from inside to underneath, I'm guessing when they redesigned the sheet metal for the 2nd generation. Our '03 has the spare under the cargo floor like a normal FWD sedan would. The 1st and 2nd generation Escapes are almost identical mechanically so I'm really surprised they changed this between them. Mounted underneath is great for periodically checking the pressure without emptying the cargo area every time, but ours would be looking at least that bad rust-wise here in the northeastern US by now. Inside is a pain to access but ours at least still looks factory-fresh after 16 years!

I want to purchase a full size tire to go underneath, would it fit/.

Ours mounts inside so I'm not sure if a full-size will fit underneath. I know a full-size would not fit inside.

I never would have guessed where the lug nut wrench was to be inserted! Also, I'd better check to make sure the wrench access receiver is free of debris and excess rust. I'd hate to be stuck on the road with that not in working order! Thanks much for the video! 🚙 💨

I just bought an '05 used a couple months ago. I'm taking a road trip so I needed to know all this. The insert wasn't rusty but it took a little effort to bump it to start lowering. The jack in mine had the lug wrench but no jack handle! Luckily I have another small floor jack I always carry and I used a large screwdriver for leverage on the lug wrench mid-point.

Never had a flat with my 08 but I did test out dropping the spare last summer. It was not pretty. The winch receiver was entirely rusted, had to sandpaper the rust out and douse it in WD-40 to get it cranking. The spare rim was also heavily rusted, I would not have trusted it on the road. Wound up replacing the spare and covering it with an elastic shrouding to protect it from water corrosion. It's a very, very, very dumb design. The spare belongs in the cargo area, not exposed to the elements.

My old Aerostar had the same design, read spare wheels went loose and dropped off. Now I'm stuck with an Escape. Don't know why there's a Lugnut thru the spare wheel, any suggestions? Thx.

thank you, I thought the jack was stored just inside the passenger side of the hatch in the side of the cargo area.... I just bought a 2012 today, so this is good info to have now that I own one... I'll have to check again for the factory jack/tools... I saw the spare during inspection...

Be careful when removing the lugnut wrench from the jack kit. There are two clips. One on each end. I pull the pointed end and broke the other offset clip.

I had a flat on my 2005 Ford Escape a year ago and was not happy when I realized the hole to insert the tire tool was rusted out and not possible to do! I tried to pry the spare down with no luck..had to go buy a can of Fix A Flat and fix bad tire then go to U-Pull it Junkyard to buy another spare tire for the Escape which I keep under the rear cargo carpet..barely fits..No other option..

Mine is so rusted it seems I was able to get it moving decently a few inches lowered. Then it just seems like its moved no where. Im turning it counter clockwise. Now it doesn't move either way and I can really get a look at the mechanism , the tire is not low enough. And now its just dangling a few inches . This is after a long day at work coming out to the parking lot to find ny front drivers tire flat. Self tapping metal screw. Going back tomorrow before work to take it off and hopefully get it patched quickly at Goodyear or Walmart.... then go back to work...

Wow. What a shitty design. Why not just put the tire access under the carpet like a normal vehicle? In this configuration, as seen for example in the video, the tire is exposed to all kind of potential road hazards and elements.

Yipes! Maybe don't use THAT particular spare wheel...
@1notgilty
@1notgilty 3 года назад
Not one of Ford's "better ideas". How dumb do Ford's engineers have to be to stick the spare tire that you need in an EMERGENCY under the vehicle where it can get damaged, rusted and destroyed, not to mention incredibly difficult to access under stressful conditions. Imagine trying to remove the spare as you lay under the vehicle in a rain or snowstorm along a dark highway. That's brilliant. What could go wrong except getting the driver killed? The good news is that Ford saved a few buck by eliminating the extra steel needed to make a proper wheel well inside the vehicle. Reminds me of the two bucks they saved on Pintos by using gas tank filler tubes that were too short and caused explosions that killed people in auto accidents. What a bunch of A**holes!
@buckyswider1
@buckyswider1 3 года назад
It allows (allowed) them to use the same body parts for the ICE only and the hybrids. In the hybrids, the battery pack is where the spare wheel well would be.
@1notgilty
@1notgilty 3 года назад
@@buckyswider1 The hybrid market for the pre-2013 Ford Escapes was so small that it didn't make any economic sense to use such a terrible design for the spare tires. The new Escapes have gone back to putting the spares inside the vehicles where they belong. I wonder how many people got killed and injured due to this terrible design mistake.
@buckyswider1
@buckyswider1 3 года назад
@@1notgilty In retrospect that's true, but when the formulated this strategy prior to the 2005 model year, they probably had higher hopes for hybrid sales in the later years. Remember they *had* to make a certain number of hybrids to meet CAFE (?) standards, so they engineered a way to make it as similar to the ICE as possible to minimize manufacturing casting differences.
@1notgilty
@1notgilty 3 года назад
@@buckyswider1 Well, if that is true then Ford really screwed the non-hybrid owners of some of their most popular vehicles because the rusted-out and damaged spare tires have probably cost millions of dollars in damage and several lives. I don't want to be lying under a disabled vehicle any longer than necessary.
