Extra TV's Music Correspondent Adam Weissler chats with Russell and Ron Mael (Sparks) about The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman project, and much more. 2011.
I think they defy categorization and most folks like thing to exist in a box. You cannot deny their music is great, even if you don't like them. "Kimono my House" was my introduction to them, and I have loved them ever since.
Rush are the same, Hawkwind launched a 1000 bands as well, Yello is also amazing, hardly any has heard of them, it's too clever for mediocre people, it's the reason i never attempted to go further with music
I don’t think they are trying to appeal to a large audience. They have stuck to their guns from the start and have done it heir unique way. Respect. Full fountainhead.
I've commented this on a bunch of videos but I keep thinking it - Ron Mael has to be one of the top ten most attractive humans to ever have existed - his mind, his talent, his face, his voice, just a complete package.
The guys seem very modest in this interview. They find it difficult to name their proudest professional achievement. It must be hard being put on the spot like that. These guys just get better with age!
I have been a fan since 1971. Such a great song with a killer video. Sparks continues to create some great music!!! To see the guys still have fun after all these years is so great to see.
My elder 16yr old brother bought their new first or second single released in the uk and saved me from Gary Glitter in the process. I turned it over and discovered the song with the most awesome ‘ ahead of it’s time “ title - “ Never Turn your Back on Mother Earth “ . It has just occurred to me that not actually knowing all the lyrics , is actually a “ ashes to ashes “ warning against being too spaced - out rather than an Ecological message ? I guess they’re often too clever for mainstream . The long version of The Number One Song stands the test of time as does everything they do. Genius Composers ❤️🏴😇from Wessex
OR, their audience expect everything to be so much over the head that they /we miss the simple essence. Personal I believe that has happened multiple times. We stumble on our expectation. "A Sparks song must be obscure and multi leveled". Said who? Ron and Russell are making jokes about that Ron writes lyrics no-one understand, but wouldn't that be a work of a true genius, to make people surch for answers, which in fact are right before their noses? 🤔 😂😂
THIS IS A FIRST !Sparks' first 'opera' The Maels' first long interview. The first without some stupid interviewer interrupting all the time. The first visit to their office(studio?). And MINE is the first comment ! Thanks for this insightful post.
I actually believe it's a corner of Russell's home. Been a lot of photos and videos taken there, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic started. (Twitter, and I asume other channels too.)
The lack of ego is unique in this profession. When asked for proudest accomplishment Russell really struggled and seemed uncomfortable with the question.
April 2020. So far no movie in sight for 'The Seduction...', BUT however, their MOVIE MUSICAL 'ANNETTE' has been filmed😃!! Adam Driver and Marion Cottilard starring, Leos Carax directing. Eagerly waiting for news about release! 😁 Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) has made (or in finishing process) of a documentary about Sparks. He has just announed that ⬇️ is awesome!! ALSO!! New album coming! Digital release May 15 (2020), physical hopefully July 3rd. 'A STEADY DRIP DRIP DRIP' Four songs pre-released: 'I'mToast' 'Self-effacing' 'One For The Ages' 'Don't fuck up my world'
With "Annette" their dream of making a movie musical finally came true! :-D Originally it was planned to show it at the Cannes Film Festival. And there are also other Film Festivals later in the year. So as it can't be shown at Cannes - because there will be no Film Festival this year - they hope that it will be shown later.
I think this was a tiny part of promoting The Seduction of Ingemar Bergman. They had something going on with Guy Maddin, but I think it failed on money. 🙄
Without trying to be cheeky, but these guys come from a family where culture and style mattered (things that they have mentioned in several interviews). Also both of them went to UCLA. They aren't a second class rap group called Dr2R or something else ridiculous 🤣🤣🤣"Bruh"! 😉
The footage of them performing “ in the future “ sometime in the 00s with Russell in a stripey sloppy joe sweater made me feel as young as he looked. 😃
Take a look at Twitter, @sparksofficial, the videos when Russell shows (off😂) how he spends his "social distance" time. He was born October 5th 1948. He is pretty fit for a guy in his seventies. Compared to most guys in the sixties, even fifties, as well, I'm afraid 🤣😇! (Let's not talk about women now... 😳😇😇😇😇)
I do agree with you. At that time they were only in their sixties and now they are 10 year older, still fit and good-looking...and above all amazingly talented musicians
