Gabriel, the fact that you don't sweep/dump ppl you don't know or haven't developed that sparring relationship with goes a long way to show how thoughtful you are. Because all it takes is one wrong fall to mess up a shoulder or snap a knee tendon/ligament

Maybe a video on size difference sparring etiquette? We all know about the BIG guy that won’t pull his strikes but we usually don’t hear about the little guy taking liberties with power or swarming after/catching kicks that would’ve broken their ribs or legs.

Agree, sometimes the smaller dude throws way too hard and you cant give it back cause you know he is gonna get ducked up
@dirtpoorchris
@dirtpoorchris Год назад
If a little guy punches me full force in the face during sparing I just give him 1 back and thats usually the end of that. Seeing as you can see them wobble just from the one half power clean shot... Actually they kinda get scared after that and just start going super super super soft. And as a big guy you have to learn that some of your high speed shots can actually KO a little guy even though you are putting zero muscle behind it and you have to be careful.

Its hard to spar realistically against 250 lbs person because they sorta have a "mauling effect" that happens when they are angry or fully committed, (like when Mike Tyson throws 5 strikes in 2 seconds and Mike Tyson was 218 lbs when champion). But a big guy can also just let you train on them, but its not exactly realistic to a real fight because he isnt flinching you and KO'ing you in 10 seconds. The stuff I let people land on me in sparring WOULD NEVER HAVE A HOPE OF TOUCHING me in a real fight against the same person. Its fun for the smaller person though if you Teddy bear up and let them practice, knowing you wont maul them.

Maybe its just me, but when I watch fighters who have long hair, its SO much easier to see when they get hit in the head. The shock of the impact shows up so much better when their hair shakes. Isnt this a disadvantage when it comes to judging in MMA or kickboxing? Like when you sparred Cliff here, it was so clear when he got hit in the head even though you were going light.

Quick question: I was told not to get in the habit of trying to catch kicks thrown in sparring, since they come at a much lower speed than real life and that might screw me over if I do that with a full speed kick. What are your thoughts on that, since I see you catching kicks in these videos?
@JohnnyBit

If you also learn to step off the line of kick negating it's power it's fine. If you catch kick without moving, then you will eat kick unprotected and that's not good.
@chefxhyrule242

That’s good advice, you can end up eating a head kick if you get used to catching kicks too much
@LeyvatenLoop
@LeyvatenLoop Год назад
From my experience, coming from a kung fu school where we spar a lot and use mid and high kicks often, the way we solve this problem is following this rule of thumb: if you're sparring someone who can throw kicks fast while still holding them at the last moment to prevent strong impacts, then feel free to catch as many kicks as you can, but if you're sparring someone who can't kick that fast while still maintaining control, then only catch kicks if you read and predicted the opponent's movement, rather than reacted to it. Just remember: while being too confortable with trying to catch kicks is really bad, NOT training it in sparring is also really bad because you will have no experience with it

Whilen seeing your video, I remember when I do sparring. I'm 6'1" and I weigh 195lb, the thing is there is no a sparring partner around my weight (from 175lb to 200lb), so I have to spar with the heavy dudes (a guy that is 6' and weighs 240lb, a guy who is 6'5" and weighs around 220lb and a dude who is 6'3" and weighs around 240lb) It can be a bit unfair, but this is good for me, because I got accostumed quite easy to hard and heavy hits. The rest of my team are below 165lb and smaller, so is quite unfair to spar with them.

i am 5'11 at 194lbs and i get wrecked by fighters in sparring that are 150lbs, one of them is 5'7 the other is 5'9 ish, they are too fast and can still hit hard and have cardio for days lol, should i just clinch more?
@abrahamberlin4519
@abrahamberlin4519 Год назад
@@eddard9442 I used to be under a same situations as you but my coach told me some tips Feints: feints create openings and or cause a reactions, so you can take advantage of that.. I use with a guy who is faster than me, but lighter. I cause an overextension on him to leave him exposed. Backwards boxing and kicking: it can be quite helpful to keep your hitting range whilst they can't reach you. Closing space while keeping the distance: The lighter guy usually knows that is suicidal to enter in a exchange of hits with a heavier guy, so he will try to create angles and throw a short combo and get out. If you close the spaces while keeping the distance with the jab or the teep, soon yoor opponent will have nowhere to run and this is the place where you need your opponent, you need your opponennt immobile. Wait for a counterattack: You must find an opening while hebis tryng to hit you or he is hitting, also you can defend his hits, and as soon as your opponent finish his combo, it's your turn to throw a hard combo.
