SPARRING For The First Time In 18 Months. I Got HUMBLED!
For context behind the video. This is my first time doing any martial arts whatsoever since around June-August ish 2022 (I honestly cant even remember)
I was sick on and off throughout 2022. Then in January 2023 I had a heart attack scare, and my health was all downhill from there then. In and out of hospital all year with heart problems. I've literally done nothing since Jan 2023! For those who want to know, i've had echocardiograms, multiple ECG's, 7day ECG's, blood tests, xrays, cardiac MRI and cardiac excertion exams, and they can't pinpoint what the problem is.
They've put it down to long term effects after having covid which a lot of people have right now. They initially thought it was myocarditis. Also, No i didn't get the jab!
This was an incredibly humbling experience for me and makes me realise how unhappy I am in my life without martial arts and fitness. I just want to be able to train again.
As of Feb 2024: I'm still sick and have had extreme fatigue and flu like symptoms since end of October. Can't catch a break! I'll get there eventually.
Appreciate your guys support. This feels like my physical rock bottom. Although I'm looking forward to documenting the climb back to the top!

(READ DESCRIPTION BEFORE COMMENTING) I'm literally baring all in this video. This honestly feels like my physical rock bottom. My mind is strong, but I can't even begin to describe how hard it is not having fitness & martial arts in my life. (read description for context). However I do appreciate all your comments and DM's and I'm looking forward to getting fighting fit again and documenting the journey right here on my channel!! Considering how long you have been out of training and you are sparring with someone who has been in the gym you don't look too bad. Also; I hear UFC 300 still needs a main event if you're interested?

I know the feeling a few weeks ago I got back into the MMA gym after 2-3 years off, and 60 lbs heavier. I have never felt more like a bum in my life. It was honestly so depressing that I only went into the gym maybe 3 times in the first two weeks. But on the third week, I pulled my head out of my rear, and told my self to just bite down on the mouthguard and go at it. And since then I have rather rapidly been regaining my skill and cardio. Who knows, maybe in six months I'll be back in fighting shape. Just keep at it Shaun, and before you know it you will be back to your old self, or maybe even better than ever before! We can do this!

@@shaunjonesfighting It's weird how COVID can affect people in such wildly different ways. If it is long COVID, though, that might be quite reassuring, as most do seem to see their symptoms abate with time, even if it can take a long time. If you've been tested extensively, that at least likely rules out serious, chronic, irremediable problems. Likely just a waiting game (which means you can invest even more time into your content). Will also make for a great comeback video once you're better.
@shaunjonesfighting
@shaunjonesfighting 7 месяцев назад
Great comment. Yeah I think it's long COVID but I'm usually reluctant to say those words because people get triggered and start talking about conspiracy theories ha! But yeah, it's mainly a waiting game which is frustrating because I'm ready to go!!! Patience is a must. Appreciate your response 🤜🤛

This isn't that as bad as you think Shaun! Personally, I ended up having some medical issues for about a year as well (undiagnosed blood clot that made it to the lungs) and put me out for a while. I remember putting on a ton of weight and feeling extremely insecure and nervous when I got back to the MMA gym. But I had to take the first step all over again and I couldn't be any happier! I think anyone that has done any sort of martial art can appreciate and respect the fact that you got in there regardless of how you look.

You looked good for your first time back in a while. I love that you guys were keeping control and keeping ego's in check so that you could have a more flowing sparring experience instead of anything going to fight speed. To me, it's the mark of an experienced martial artist that can keep themselves from going hard and compliment each others energy. Since if you can land shots when you are taking it easy in sparring you can land shots going hard. Plus, easier to push yourself when you're tired if the energy isn't ramped up to fight speed so you can reach higher fighting cardio levels sooner. I was hoping you would do more stance switching and go from a more orthodox stance to other stances just to throw off your opponent slightly. I loved that you dropped down and went for a sweep, Tony Ferguson style lol.

Just for the people who don’t know or think that this shi is east. Your fit for what you train. Just because you can run around a pitch for 90 minutes doesn’t mean you can do this. And just because you can do this. Doesn’t mean you can run around a pitch. Fighting is different. Every shot and feint is tiring. And have to think about your next shot and what your opponent is gonna do is exhausting. Shaun did great here after such a long time off

Yeah turns out it was actually 19-20 months. I miscalculated. I stopped kickboxing in June 2022 because I bruised a rib just before we went to Ibiza in August. So it's to be expected with that kind of layoff combined with the heart issues for the entirety of 2023.

@@shaunjonesfighting I'm carrying a but extra myself. Still hitting the gym, but been slacking off in there the last while and finding it hard to go hard these days. I'm 44 and carrying a bunch of niggling injuries. Disc bulges (can't remember how many but more than 3) in lower back and neck. Bicep tendonopathy that keeps coming back. I've been working around them. No bicep work or pullups and no deadlifting off the floor. RDLs really help though, so doing plenty of those and doing all the other usual stuff. Just not getting all my sets in. It was a good spar. You can see the technique is still there. Some good flurries/combinations. Your partner is a quick study too. Look forward to seeing more. Gives me motivation to get a sweat going in the gym.
@shaunjonesfighting
@shaunjonesfighting 7 месяцев назад
Ah disc bulges are no joke! I've had some really bad back problems for years, couldn't train legs for about 2-3 years without horrible lower back and sciatic pain. RDLs are great, even glute ham raises or hyperextensions are what really helped me. Hoping you can keep making progress with it 💪

It’s aight jones. I retryned to must Thai after finger and shoulder issues, was outta shape, couldn’t even complete the easy class without difficulty. Met a motivated fifo worker and he motivated me and told me to come back for sparring the next day. Wasn’t gonna, thought I’d be making a mockery of the gym if I couldn’t adhere to all the couches instruction, that if I wasn’t going 100 I wasn’t going at all. It’s easy to slip back into that athelete way of thinking when your in those environments. But second day at sparring my cardio was immensely better, I cleaned up the gym for the most part against guys that had trained there all the time I was off. That aside, I’ve had to stop and return before that too, and that wasn’t the case when I stepped into the ring 😅moral of the story, you are trying, you can’t control the speed at which results are acrued only the hopefully demeanour and attitude you have whilst your toiling in your efforts. Don’t get discouraged. Make yourself the man that will be beaten 10,000 times and he gets up with the same gusto every single time. I’ve got up a few dozen now, and I know some of those guys haven’t even been checked once. They may be strong, but I am at least as strong or stronger. Strength just comes in different forms. Even though the audience cannot see yours doesn’t diminish it’s legitimacy. Stand tall, stand proud, and do not be ashamed of the winds you’ve been caught in. You’ve gotten up or at least tried every single time

one thing I didnt realise was that when you take time off from actual fight training like in the gym its like falling down a hill you already climbed up.Yes you know how to do things and youll have IQ but your body isnt tuned in and for me I was overweight when I returned so alot of my agile moves werent usable.When we take time off being in the fight gym we have to re climb the initial hill to tune our bodies and brains.
