CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) gives Marcus Publius Glabrus (John Dall) an ultimatum to take back to Rome, then rallies his troops for the battle to come.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) is a rebellious slave purchased by Lentulus Batiatus (Peter Ustinov), owner of a school for gladiators. For the entertainment of corrupt Roman senator Marcus Licinius Crassus (Laurence Olivier), Batiatus' gladiators are to stage a fight to the death. On the night before the event, the enslaved trainees are "rewarded" with female companionship. Spartacus' companion for the evening is Varinia (Jean Simmons), a slave from Brittania. When Spartacus later learns that Varinia has been sold to Crassus, he leads 78 fellow gladiators in revolt. Word of the rebellion spreads like wildfire, and soon Spartacus' army numbers in the hundreds. Escaping to join his cause is Varinia, who has fallen in love with Spartacus, and another of Crassus' house slaves, the sensitive Antoninus (Tony Curtis). The revolt becomes the principal cog in the wheel of a political struggle between Crassus and a more temperate senator named Gracchus (Charles Laughton). Anthony Mann was the original director of Spartacus, eventually replaced by Stanley Kubrick, who'd previously guided Douglas through Paths of Glory. The film received 4 Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Ustinov. A crucial scene between Olivier and Curtis, removed from the 1967 reissue because of its subtle homosexual implications, was restored in 1991, with a newly recorded soundtrack featuring Curtis as his younger self and Anthony Hopkins standing in for the deceased Olivier.

Spartacus was smart enough to know that allowing Glabber to return was the worst thing that could be done to him, but that he was too much of a coward to end his life, as was the way of a Roman commander.

I don't know the actual history of this *battle*. But sending the captured commander of a Roman force would have been a massive insult. The Roman commander would have been expected to die fighting by the senate. So having him returned after being captured would have meant shame, disgrace and insult all round.

Many of you are forgetting that the Spartacus script was written by Dalton Trumbo, a blacklisted writer who would most certainly be on the side of Occupy Wall Street, were he alive today.
@saikofukuyo973
@saikofukuyo973 6 лет назад
And Dalton Trumbo would be embarrassed as hell by that pathetic hipster buffoonery. Not that Trumbo was a political genius. A good fiction writer, but a commie hypocrite otherwise, who named names (against WW2 pacifists) and supported blacklists and repression (as long as it was by the Soviets) when it suited his Stalinist agenda . Gee, maybe you're right and he would be involved with the OWS cult!

The Hollywood blacklists did serious damage to people's reputations and lives. The McCarthy hearings were yet another attempt by conservatives to muzzle American citizens political opinions for their own cynical ends. Crassus' line in the movie about how "lists of the disloyal were being compiled" was straight out of McCarthy's playbook.

The story is very Americanized. It`s pretty dumb logic. The Roman system was pretty fair all things considered. Anybody could have been a slave and anybody could have become a Roman citizen and had protection under Roman law. Slavery wasn`t limited to Rome either. There was slavery in Persia, Germania, Gaul, etc. (accept China).

I just saw. a documentary about the real Spartacus ...the real history wasn’t so innocent as the movie ...they made it to the alps and could have escaped ,but they decided they liked plundering Rome more than their supposed freedom and turned back ...
@brianforbes8325
@brianforbes8325 4 года назад
No Cool Cat, they never made it to the Alps. Spartacus and the slave army were smashed in southern Italy, in the approximate area where the battle in the film occurred. Spartacus, however, was killed during the battle and did not survive to hear all the other survivors yell "I'm Spartacus!" and then be crucified. I'm not familiar with the documentary film you saw, but it sounds like it was filled with inaccuracies.
@thunderbird1921
@thunderbird1921 4 года назад
It depends on the historic Roman account. The movie followed one of them, but several were written with different varying descriptions and stated goals. We do know that a group split off from Spartacus' main army to keep plundering rather than just find a way to escape. As for his own fate, Spartacus was never found after the final battle. He could have gone down there or unknown to Roman leaders have been crucified with the others similar to what the film shows.

LOLOLOL! "We want nothing from Rome!!!!" Sure!!!! Actually, Spartacus wanted some thing from Rome, Gold and Silver! Spartacus went north and beat the Northern Roman armies, he had an open road to the barbarians lands to escape, but "NO"!!!! He turned back to south, sacked the city of Rome of it's Gold, but he got stuck there because more Roman armies blocked it's way going back. So he went more south, made a deal with Venetian pirates to take them out on ships, but Spartacus got betrayed , because Rome payed more for the pirates, not to take them out. So, Spartacus had to fight with Roman armies again, where he was outnumbered and beaten. Here we go, if Spartacus wouldn't be greedy for Gold, he could have escaped to north?

And ye, the slaves did make it out of the country, and never where they settled was the practice of slavery continued. Well, actually, I find that hard to believe. The film is made like a progressive anti-slavery film but is a time period where almost every society had their own standards regarding slaves. So it's less being opposed to slavery than being opposed to THEIR slavery.
