It's common knowledge that the Spartans were known across the ancient world for being incredibly skilled in battle, but it seems a lesser known fact about them is that they actually adored the elderly?

The "IF" quote reminds me of the following: "Shortly before World War I, the German Kaiser was the guest of the Swiss government to observe military maneuvers. The Kaiser asked a Swiss militiaman: 'You are 500,000 and you shoot well, but if we attack with 1,000,000 men what will you do?' The soldier replied: 'We will shoot twice and go home.'"

It's actually pretty interesting when you think about it. This just came to my mind when he told about the passage in God of War; in Norse mythology it doesn't mean that it would be dishonorable to die old, they were actually kept fairly well in the society due to their wisdom in life. But Vikings from lived by the rules of these mythologies often pleaded their liege to attend on raid or war so he could die honorably and enter Valhalla. They would go first, everyone knowing they will die. But they would go with full ferocity, usually taking several arrows to take down or the old man could even score an kill before gates of Valhalla would open to them. Now imagine what it's like to be that enemy they're attacking on: You would have just witnessed and old man kill your brother in arms without a single doubt or even the slightest fear of death and you are hearing an army of similarly thinking young, fit and extremely ferocious force chanting across the hill "Odin! Odin! Odin!". That would scare anyone and he the ultimate honorary death. Spartans were rational about this and respected elders even more by understanding their part for the country. Vikings weaponized their beliefs into psychological warfare.

a lot of ancient greece practiced infanticide. one thing in ancient sparta is Women were expected to have children and if they were sterile of had no children they were often shamed publicly. so their gender equality was conditional and based on limited reproductive freedom really. while better than much of ancient greece it still would be considered very lacking. they essentially only valued a woman if she produced children and raised them, their value was inherently tied to that in Spartan culture. so not quite as progressive as people think.

Not to mention the elderly being badasses because they managed to survive, to put it mildly, a seemingly endless stream of obstacles to one’s preservation, but the elderly also have wisdom and knowledge, secrets and information from forgotten times. You would be doing yourself and your warrior brothers a favor to listen to them when they speak.

Radler is also a pretty common drink, up in the Alps. It's great, after a long hike, and they make it on the spot by mixing a good beer with lemon soda, to keep it fresh.

@@tristengunter2579 It wasn't abandoned though, heck that particular earthquake and the resulting Helot revolt that led to the creation of an independent Messenia was 30 years before the Peloponnesian War. There’s two sides to the warm toilet seat. On one hand, that’s nasty and someone else’s ass was just on it. On the other, if it’s cold af and you’re expecting the seat to be freezing and it’s warm because some chad warmed the seat for you, you feel this inner peace that cannot be replicated any other way.

The Spartans did leave the baby’s at a bottom of a mountain for a night because it was believed that any baby that could survive that is a true spartan And my favorite line is either when Xerxes said you should have just marched you women down here and Leonids said “we’ll you obviously don’t know our women” Or when they say “lay down your weapons” And Leonids said “come and get them” or “then we will fight in the shade”
