If Maddie is there with a fiddle...anyone else may as well put their fiddle in the trash can...she has no competition...
@dlagrua
@dlagrua 6 лет назад
While I will agree that Maddie is a great bluegrass fiddler, she would have some serious competition from Aynsley Porchek and Steven Burwell.

This guy is by NO means the worst offender. Nevertheless, Pete Wernick's book (40+ years ago) taught banjo etiquette and it is worth revisiting. The banjo here did not obliterate the entire guitar solo, which so often happens, only the end of the solo. That is still too much. Aside from the jokes that were born out of "Deliverance" reference, there is a reason why banjos are the butt of every BG joke. You'd think they'd get it by now.
@BluegrassRules101
@BluegrassRules101 5 лет назад
roal ik but this is just a jam session and the guitar did extend his solo further than typical into the banjo fill lick. This is not a rehearsed performance
@roalik4270
@roalik4270 5 лет назад
@@BluegrassRules101 I understand, and you are correct: his tag was kind of a tag x 2. Nevertheless, I suspect you have been around enough to know exactly what I refer to. Even in a jam, an accomplished mandolin, fiddle or dobro player would appreciate the chance to add fill behind vocals, but banjo players rarely step out of the way to allow this. At the same time, I understand that an exuberant rhythm guitar player is also quite capable of burying a guitar lead. Either way, not meaning to criticize, I simply would love to get the the concept out to ALL banjo players that mandolin players aren't the only ones that can "chunk" the offbeat.
@roalik4270
@roalik4270 5 лет назад
@@BluegrassRules101 BTW, I didn't realize that I was on a page posted by "the banjo player". I will gladly add that I have heard you on several videos and do enjoy and appreciate your playing. You have a good touch and good taste.
@BluegrassRules101
@BluegrassRules101 5 лет назад
roal ik Actually that’s my brother on the banjo, but I look a lot like him lol. He’s three years younger than me. And yeah absolutely, he and I have worked on dynamics and it’s something we truly try to be conscious of in jam sessions. But you are very right about different instruments getting in the way of solos or vocals, it’s a beautiful thing when everyone tries to play tastefully and respectfully.
