As a layperson/stroke survivor, I can testify to the value of completing exercise #4. There's a temptation to skip it because it's not follow-along, or one doesn't have a special passage to read, or think 'I will do it later'. My SLP had me read my novel aloud, practicing these strategies for 10 to 15 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day. It was surprisingly difficult at first (I guess we don't often read aloud continuously as adults!), but after 2 weeks my speech has improved dramatically. And I am still practicing using these tips. I am so grateful to Kasondra for recording these videos. They reinforce, explain, and allow me to leverage my sessions with my SLP.

Last week, after coming out of a surgery to repair stents my mom developed stroke like symptoms. Symptoms relating to her speech and mental status. The doctors claimed there was no record of a stroke. They also said this probably happened because of the anesthesia. Before the surgery my mom spoke clearly. After she seems to say the first to letters of the word and then kind of mumble the rest of it. It breaks my heart to see this happen.

Kind of you to put this information out there. No speech problems, just went down a rabbit hole listening to podcasts about neuralink.

Hey Linda! Thanks for watching and for commenting. Folks feel dry mouth when the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva and this can be for a variety of reasons, as simple as dehydration.

Thank you so much! These are very helpful! One question for me is why is it harder to make the K sound?
@SpeechSecrets
@SpeechSecrets Месяц назад
The “k” sound uses the back of the tongue to create a seal against the soft palate (Aka the back part of the roof of your mouth). Once released, there is a sudden burst of air. Sounds like this are called voiceless stops (just like “p” and “t”). The “k” sound is an earlier developmental sound (as compared to “s” or “r”), but it does involve use of the back of the tongue and requires coordination to create the seal and release at the appropriate time to create the sound.

Can someone practice these therapies if he use to stammer?
@SpeechSecrets
@SpeechSecrets Месяц назад
The target audience for this video is dysarthria and mumbling, not stuttering. Slowing rate and taking pauses can be beneficial for individuals with a stammer, however over articulation of consonants is not a helpful strategy for this population. In fact, it’s the opposite of an approach for stuttering used called light articulation contacts.

What is a speech disorder when a person cannot pronounce the letter D or R? and how to fix?
@SpeechSecrets
@SpeechSecrets 22 дня назад
R is particularly a tough sound and one of the later developing consonants for native English speakers. I am working on a sound articulation series and hope to include R later on. Speech therapists usually work with articulation difficulties by helping the person to make the sound in isolation, then word level, and in various sound contexts, requiring A LOT of repetition for the eventual natural production in speech.
