I'm pissed that the trailer for this one gives away a major shocking moment (the scene with the boy) that was incredibly impactful in the original precisely because it was so unexpected. Why do they keep doing shit like this?! So aggravating!

@@spookyastronauts the trailer was HORRIBLE. it gave away everything but the ending, what's up with the son? yup.shows you exactly what his issue was, the danger, and even the shed. two major plot points. it also makes the acting looking way over the top. the trailer makes me very angry. i'll see this, but i highly doubt it could be as good as the original. if the trailer is any guide, it suffers the same problem as virtually every american remake: a severe lack of subtlety.

@fcake-v5y I hate when trailers spoil the movie. Remember Invisible Man from a few years ago? ***Spoilers ahead****** The damn trailer showed us the special suit the man was using to be Invisible, so we know the whole movie that he's real and can really be Invisible. The movie would have been way more intense if we weren't sure if his wife was telling the truth or if she was just nuts. But the whole time it was just about if the other characters would believe her or not. Bad marketing!

While I understand the frustration with the original ending I personally feel that was the point of the entire movie. The family was so obsessed with politeness and not being percieved as insensitive that they let these people walk all over them. I personally love films like The Stepford Wives, Rosemary's Baby, and The Vanishing with grim unsatisfying endings that serve as disturbing warnings to the audience. I feel like modern audiences tend to feel like there needs to be this sense of closure and triumph at the end (the bad guys lose or get comeuppance in some form or at the very least a singular main character makes it out ok), hence why remakes/American and English speaking remakes tend to alter the endings. And while there's nothing wrong with wanting that (as it means the audience is invested in the film and cares enough about these characters to want them to make it out) I do love endings where the audience is supposed to be left disturbed or disatisfied with what happened. However, I'm looking forward to the remake and hope I get to see it soon. ❤

This is me being nitpicky, but I feel like James McAvoy’s character being buff defeats the purpose. The OG character can’t brute force anyone to do what he wants but he gets it done anyway because of the politeness of the other family. Having someone so ripped play the role of the villain takes away that aspect.

The boy in the remake seems much more involved and does a great job showcasing his expressions through the trauma in which he is living. I think this remake was important to draw attention to the 2022 version. Without it, some people, including myself may not have known about it. It’s not even available to buy digitally everywhere so it can be a hidden gem of sorts. I started watching it and so far I do prefer the new one due to the boy and McAvoys involvement.

Nice to hear that the remake was so much different than the original. Like you, I was really surprised that a remake was coming out. The original is so much about the Scandinavian politeness (I´m Swedish, so it felt pretty close to home :)), and I was wondering how that would translate. When I saw the original I did not feel like ever watching it again - I think I was really scary and so uncomfortable. But I think I will watch this one, but I might give it a few years first. As a person who tries to be always be kind and usually keeps myself from judging others, I was not impressed with the original. To me, it was a ridiculous snuff film in disguise trying to take itself seriously. And before people start saying: "but that was the point!" If wanted to watch something that warned me against being a doormat, I could watch a children's movie for that. And you know what? That children's movie would actually be MORE realistic than the original. From what I heard, it seems the remake will EMBRACE the ridiculousness of the original and that the characters are actually realistically braver. So I might actually like the remake more.

Just got out of the cinema. I'm glad I didn't know what James McAvoy said before going in but it dawned on me pretty early that they'd have to diverge at a certain point because of how they had slightly tweaked things. And that the director was the dude that made Eden Lake because that seemed appropriate. I enjoyed both pretty evenly and yeah I can see the justifications for both. I think just because of the fun time I had watching the original I might edge it over this one but both had me giggling along.

@levischorpioen
@levischorpioen 6 дней назад
Yeah if this has a happy ending, then there is zero reason for the film to exist. Honestly, the fact that both families speak English as a first language kinda renders it pointless too. Even as someone who could understand one of the two couples in the original (me being Dutch), the paranoia of never knowing if something said in private was translated correctly when asked about it, the paranoia of never knowing if someone’s talking shit about you in a language you don’t understand, it all adds to the atmosphere. Do away with that and you basically just destroy most of the film’s tension.

@@levischorpioenI say this as someone who despised the very idea of someone remaking this. It felt desperate and lazy. Really enjoyed the remake and I think the original is one of the best horror films of the past decade. The remake has a happy ending (the family does fight back) and it’s way more of a crowd pleaser but the performances are fantastic across the board and the dialogue is really sharp. I’d suggest giving it a shot even if you hate the idea of a happy ending (for the record I do think the original is light years better).

Saw the remake today. Definitely a chance for James McAvoy to bring his own form of madness. I remember when there used to be multiple suspense thrillers that came out during the year where an established actor/actress could play a truly homicidal role. I guess that trend kind of burned out in the 2000's, but I would love to see it make a revival. The ending was very different, and I was okay with that. The original film has such a tragic end that this Hollywood version seemed to go for the perfect happy ending. I can see why the comparison to "The Vanishing" is being made. I gave it a score of 6/10. The original I gave a 4/10, but that was because of the tragic ending.

personally something that pisses me off about this remake is how the director treats the original. i had to go look that interview up again “There’ll be people that see the original movie and go, ‘Why hasn’t he remade that movie? Why hasn’t he made this incredibly punchy, unrelenting ending?'” Watkins told SFX Magazine. “But I would argue, with my characters and their journey, I’m following through their journey in terms of agency and how they would react,” he added. it just makes me so angry to see the guy argue that he's doing a good thing by completely altering the core of the movie itself just because he can't understand the cultural difference between his american view and the original movie's danish point of view. if you can't even respect the cultural differences or the reason for the original being the way it is then don't bother remaking it when a remake should at least have some respect for the original material, just go make your own movie

Does it have the same style with the score? Where the calm scenes have a heavy ominous sound, and the intense scenes have a calm sound?

I'm glad the remake wasn't pointless. I couldn't believe it when I heard they were remaking a movie that's only two years old!

Tbh. I hated the original 😂. Like I totally understand the point but…I guess it’s just a cultural difference because I couldn’t even feel bad for the parents man like damn it was so annoying. So I was highly hoping this one was more “American “ IYKWIM

The original left me fried for days afterwards. I was so annoyed by how much the new one gave away in the trailers. I’ve tried over the last few years not to watch trailers as they’ve gotten out of control

I usually never get upset over remakes. Yes, I think most of them are unnecessary and bland and it makes me sad that we are apparently losing the ability to create original stories anymore, but this one... This makes me mad. And sad. Just watching the trailer - where they gave everything away - raised my blood pressure. Like, really? The kid with the tongue? In the trailer? Wow. And I'm going to go ahead and assume that the family fights back here, which takes away everything from the original. There, we are sucked into this pit a darkness and despair, it was honestly one of the most frustrating, horrible and gut wrenching endings I have ever scene, and in the remake - they changed it? Then just write and original story! Don't try and ride on the success of the original, it's just rude. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it, though, thanks for taking us along!

I kinda disagree with not watching the original. Although its okay not to but seeing the original makes this film even better. I swear, the ending is the most satisfying shit you will ever see if youve seen the original. And not seeing the original just makes the movie feel okay.

The original ending is the entire point of the film though 😂 I’m so afraid they made the ending happy because Hollywood can’t handle horrifying endings in a horror film for some reason 😅

Yes yes i was confuses why a remake was made... but i personally didnt like the original so i didnt plan on seeing this one. Even so, I'm always grateful for any reviews, so thanks for this one! Edit: James is an amazing an actor that i really debated watching it... i'll recognize his talent, even if i dont see the movie!

Personally, I found the original annoying lol. Purely because as polite as I normally am, there is no way I would ever put up with what the parents in the original did. It was so frustrating to watch. I'm hoping this one is more "realistic" for me. American btw.

can anyone tell me why actors from not america doing american movies speak in perfect english but when off set they speak in heavy accent they must rehearse to speak without an accent i mean if someone from the south moves to the north after a while they lose their southern accent

I hear the trailer gave lots away. I have stopped watching trailers almost fully in the last few years I think, at least for horror. I loved When Evil Lurks, loved it and found the trailer to spoil everything in the entire film when I watched it after seeing the film.

I finally watched the original a couple of days ago after seeing the trailer to the remake when I watched Alien Romulus. I've seen a lot of the disturbing films you have showcased etc but my god I really wasn't prepared for this one. A real slow burn with one hell of a finale! I think I'll definitely be checking out the remake in the cinema.

To my surprise, I was really enjoying the more comedic spin in this remake. Then I saw the ending and I was absolutely furious because it literally ruined the entire point of the original film. James McAvoy can't save this watered down, generic version of what is a truly disturbing original film that punches the viewer straight in the gut. It's like Blumhouse took a movie, remade it and said "you Americans are so incredibly stupid: enjoy!"

I'm still not convinced to see it yet, I think it's mainly Blumhouse's name that's keeping me from watching it, I just have a feeling it's gonna be watered down. Also is this PG-13 or R? If it's R then I will probably check it out, but if it's PG-13 I'm not gonna waste my time.

Wait, you seriously went in blind? Have you seen a movie this summer? I feel like I saw the trailer for this before every movie since like March. Anyway, I had no intention of seeing it, I thought the trailer pretty made it look like typical PG-13 Blumhouse crap, but I was walking out of theater after the very short new Kevin Smith joint, and decided I wanted to stay and see another movie. I was pleasantly surprised by Speak No Evil, and now, I’m headed home to watch the original.

Cultural or not I think our innate human instinct for survival supersedes any taught societal norms. I don’t know a single person that wouldn’t fight back with everything they got in a life and death situation like that. Even watching the mother react in such a weird way to her daughter being taken right from her arms (knowing for a fact she will end up having her tongue cut out and abused then murdered) was fucking stupid.
