I prefer the original. Which may be a bias because I saw the original first, but I definitely prefer that original ending. I enjoyed this one overal, but once the major shift happens and this goes off and does its own thing, I felt like it just turns into a generic American thriller, and by changing the ending, it really lost something. Like this ended exactly how I thought an American version would go. And your point about their cultures being too similar is so spot on. Especially since the first one is a commentary on Danish people being over polite and courteous, and nobody is accusing Americans of that lol. But the people I know who haven't seen the original who really really liked this one, so I do think it depends on which one you see first.
I saw this last week and then saw the original today. I liked both but I liked the newer version for James Mcavoy’s performance and the young actor who played the son of the other couple. The original was absolutely more bleak but I think that was the point. Depends on what you’re looking for. If you want the entertainment and a nice neat ending then watch the 2024 version. Want to see the true horror that sometimes is the reality of humanity… 2022. I think American audiences could have handled the 2022 version but there are absolutely things that would’ve created a lot of anger for some had they not changed them.
Just like they did with Spoorloos (The Vanishing - 1972) - Hollywood decide to remake a perfectly fine, even great, movie. Of course, we can't have the bleak ending the original carried off so well, so we have to have a 'Hollywood Happy Ending' which completely goes against the original film-makers' intent. See also Ringu, Ju-On etc Honestly, Hollywood, just get your own original ideas and stop with all the remakes and unwanted half-assed, fan-service sequels.
@@SuperMickyChow the intent is key! This is what makes them feel so different. The intent behind the original had real purpose and a message it was trying to convey. This remake is simply about making some money. In my opinion. -Kristie
