The LPF for LFE should be left at 120. It’s the low pass filter where the sub starts to roll off. By dropping that to 80 hz your limiting the subs abilities to help in the 80-120 hz range. Regardless of where you have your speakers crossed over, the LPF should be left at 120 hz.

That's right. Seems like he meant to go to the crossover screen to set the speakers to 80hz, not the LFE screen. This should really be clarified to avoid confusion.

This has been through rule for the longest now with LPF for LFE at 120hz. I don't understand why he would set it to 80.

What are your thoughts on localization starting around 70hz? Edit: for clarification the change he made was correct. You don't want your subs to be localized.

@@adamjj85 But that would be an HPF for your mid bass woofers, not an LPF. Your mid bass woofers in a surround sound environment will have good localization with an HPF at 80hz and you should match that crossover on the LPF for subs. Depending on how the speakers are setup (active or passive) you will also have to calculate what your actual dB roll off is on your passive crossovers in the speaker unit additional to any digital signal crossovers you also apply.

I’m curious. What if your front speakers are big speakers with 10” woofers and you only have 1 sub and it’s only an 8”? Wouldn’t setting the fronts to large and then use the setting LFE+Main be better? Or should I still set my fronts to small and have all the bass go through the 8” sub even though my front drivers are bigger?

Hey man, I'd have to disagree with the lpf for lfe. As the lfe channel is dedicated for lfe, if a sound engineer does indeed put bass through lfe between 80 and 120, this would be missed as the bass signal does not go to full range speakers no matter what

These are just recommendations that you could try out. There are many variations of speaker combos that can make our recommendations different. In this situation the bass came through much cleaner and tighter and is worth eliminating the 80-120hz on the LFE. Try it out at 80hz and worse case you can change it back 120hz. Leave the Bass crossover at 120… speakers are set to 80 then nothing except what’s below 80hz will be sent to the sub…but the LFE channel may include info up to 120hz…you are potentially losing sound by changing that

Sorry to say you are absolutely WRONG, should have the basic idea about crossover settings for the LFE and Bass Management, both are independent and different. If the Sub is selected to run in LFE mode you are supposed to set the LFE cutoff for LFE channel, nothing to do with the speakers used. LFE channel has content from 120Hz and its supposed to be 120 ALWAYS. by setting it to 80, you are restricting the LFE channel from 80-120. The bass management is selected with the speakers, not with the subwoofer. That is done in the speaker crossover. Surprised to see these kind of blunders from installers. Also the bass management with the speakers are not done by giving a blind number like 80, its based on the room response, most probably a room like this will suit 100-110.

@@anoopk1771 Everybody has said this in the comments already about the LFE...you are correct. However, an 80 crossover is the starting point for novice. Ask yourself if a person needs this video to understand the settings do you really think they are taking room measurements 🤔

@@anoopk1771 The standard cross over point for speakers not The LFE channel is 80 hz everyone will tell you that. You are stuck on discussing LFE when I clearly said 120 hz was was right for that. If you are not taking room measurements and have any decent speaker 80 hz crossover is the standard recommendation. That’s recommended just about everywhere.

Typically 2 channel set ups are more premium speakers and will have a lower frequency response so in order to really enjoy your investment most people leave it set to large. We hope to do more 2 channel content in the future but home theater has had an overwhelmingly amount of interest. Thanks for watching!

Hey, Well explained video👌its always a pleasure watching your videos..Need a suggestion from you Im having 4700h denon amp. My room size is 22*13*9...now im having klipsch 620f(front)..r52c (centre)..51m (surrounds). I would like to upgrade my home theatre.i only watch movies.Not intetested in music listening.which one will be a better choice KEF or Q ACCOUSTIC or SVS PRIME or KLIPSCH itself. I want to hear the dialogue with utmost clarity even at a distsnce of 22 feet.Which one will be your suggestion?

We always recommend keeping the same manufacturer throughout the system if possible to have the same tonal balance. We would recommend going with a klipsch. You could upgrade to the reference premier center speaker like the RP-504c or RP-404c. Just make sure your crossover is set properly and the level output is adjusted based on your seating area. The built in calibration mic is a good place to start. Thanks for watching!

Setting all speakers to small is indeed best when you have sub(s), but the LFE LPF is not a crossover. It's just a low pass filter for the LFE effects channel. You typically want to leave that at 120hz even when you use a 80hz bass management crossover. The only exception is if you listen to a very rare movie where the mastering engineer made a mistake and put broken content in the LFE channel. In those cases, you can reduce the LFE LPF to filter that out.

@@Dreamediaav hmm...normally filtering out high frequencies makes the bass less "tight" not more. If there is correlated content in both LFE and full range channels, it's possible that a non-matching cutoff frequency would result in phase differences. That could cause cancellation for the correlated content. Normally, the same signal isn't sent to LFE and full range channels, but the mastering engineers can do it if they want, so it may be content specific.

Great vid. Just to unpack it a bit… Newer AVRs have an option to send full range to center and surround even in "small" mode. In these newer AVRs "small" means full range to center + surrounds and then activate the subwoofer at the crossover point. Setting to large treats the center + surround crossovers as HARD STOPS, where the center + surround will not play below the crossover and the sub picks up at the crossover. People that set to large are buying into the delusion that a pair of $1000 fronts can replicate 60hz better than a $750 subwoofer (let alone a pair of them?) no way. Try it and listen for yourself. I've tried both and unless you are running $150k of Von Schweikerts as your center + surround, you should be in small mode. I also recommend setting an extremely capable center crossover (paired with capable subs) to 60Hz as some vocal range can get into the subs and make for less clear audio. Cheers.

Hi team I have a question about pioneer AVR, I own elite VSX 50 and in pioneer there is an option in the remote control audio parameter where phase control plus function is activated when you play Dolby and DTS movies or videos, this is set to 6 millisecond by default, and it sounds great bass is great through mains and all but it does not sound right and bass is missing in some Blu-ray’s and dvd unless I change the settings to 9 or 12 milliseconds but then I loose bass in other movies and videos, can you pls help and tell me what’s the best setting for phase control plus, and please Note the MCACC does not change this setting. You have to manually adjust, please help how it works it’s so frustrating. Thanks

AVR - Yamaha HTR 4072. (5.1) All Yamaha Bookshelf speakers as below. Center - 58Hz - 45Khz FS - 57Hz - 45Khz SS - 62Hz - 20Khz SW - 20-160Hz According to abv what crossover is to be set. Finally I will listen and decide but 1st you suggest. Happy New Year

Ideally you would cross your mid bass with an HPF at 80hz

Not necessarily. It depends on the speakers used in the room. Running the calibration mic first is a good place to start and then manipulate the crossovers one at a time and see how it changes the frequency response. Each speaker and room is different. Thanks for watching!

@@Dreamediaav I've had LFE on 120Hz until now and today I set all speakers to 80Hz and LFE to 80Hz as well. I noticed a big difference, much, much better and pleasant the sound although many say you should leave the LFE at 120Hz. I personally like it so LFE on 80Hz! Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹 Europe

You normally have the correct information, but placing 80hz for LPF for LFE is incorrect, and the fact the customer said what he said makes it seem like a lie. Your channel was great :/ what happened.

120hz is too high for subwoofers. He should have honestly went 60hz and under for thunderous bass. My home theater JL Audio 15’s are set to 60hz and it’s monstrous. If you set it too high, you’re missing out. And 120 is laughable for subwoofers when it can go downwards to 24hz

Crossover at 80 is THX standard and meant to apply well to any subwoofer good or bad. If your sub extends well into 200Hz and your speakers would have distorted 80Hz, as many do, higher one would be actually better and result in less muddy low frequencies. There is no localization issue with LF up to 120-150 and much less of an issue if you have 2 or more subs. Remember nothing will reproduce LF as cleanly with low distortion as subwoofer - so use it!

For setting up the speakers to large or small it's all about the room size and I am running a 7.2 surround sound home theater system and I have all of my speakers set to small and I'm running all cerwin vega speakers for my home theater so it's all about your room size and not having big or small speakers and how I know this is because I talked to a audio video specialist and which happens to be a very good friend of mine for the past 30 years and I wish that everyone else would be on the same page and not be giving out false information
