-HOW I ACCESS RU-vid IN CHINA: goo.gl/J5iPdc
“The hero’s journey always begins with the call. One way or another, a guide must come to say, “Look, you’re in Sleepy Land. Wake. Come on a trip. There is a whole aspect of your consciousness, your being, that’s not been touched. So you’re at home here? Well, there’s not enough of you there.” And so it starts.
The call is to leave a certain social situation, move into your own loneliness and find the jewel, the center that’s impossible to find when you’re socially engaged. You are thrown off-center, and when you feel off-center, it’s time to go. This is the departure when the hero feels something has been lost and goes to find it. You are to cross the threshold into new life. It’s a dangerous adventure, because you are moving out of the sphere of the knowledge of you and your community.”

ABOUT ME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello there! If you make it this far, welcome!
I am Syifa, an Indonesian female solo traveler, who started solo traveling in 2014. I enjoy budget traveling by staying with locals, motorbike riding but also like to explore local food.
After working for the government till 2016, I left Indonesia to pursue long-term traveling. As naive as I was, it only lasted me for 5 months throughout Asia. In January 2017 I moved to China for an English teaching job, which was considered to be my first living abroad experience. Stayed until May 2018, living in China has changed me, in a good way.
I love traveling and creating travel videos on RU-vid. It is such a rewarding work for me that I do wish this would last me for a while.

In my honest opinion, what makes a good and interesting RU-vidr/vlogger is not about what u wear regardless which race, religion or family background u come from. It's the content u are producing, the level of creativity, the energy u put in...its the way how u talk, the videography and editing skills. You have good looks with or without headscarf, a plus point. Tats it. Thats the whole concept apart from time & the money required. What matters is, u enjoy what u do and the crowd will eventually come & flow naturally without even u having to pretend or fake about anything. Now think again about how u got your first 10k subs back then. Anyways, not wearing a hijab or tudung doesn't make anyone less muslim. As long u still have faith and believe in Him, insyallah more peace & success coming in your way. I'm still glad I found you thru Foogie btw. I love food & travel, and your videos helped me alot. You see..there are other thousands of viewers like me in particular that only focuses on what they want to know and learn thru a quality productive video which you have been contributing to date. We appreciate content creators like u. We are not here to judge around. It shouldn't be that way at all. So worry not Shifa. Keep it going and go stronger yea. We want more videos. Dear Syifa, I understand your feeling on living a double life and facing conflict with family and people around you when it comes to hijab. It is difficult for hijabis to become non-hijabis in Indonesia and Malaysia especially. Even though there are people who condemn you for your decision to remove your scarf, there are also people who support you and those who love your video content without caring whether you wear a scarf or not. Please keep making videos and do be true to yourself.

I can relate. I was forced to wear the hijab, even before I hit puberty. Now that I am an adult I still see it as an obligation for me to keep it on, as to not hurt my family's feeling or avoid any conflicts. It's really frustrating. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that I will treat my children differently and will give them the freedom to choose what they wear.

SINCERITY IS KEY why you wear or not is to please other's or The Almighty make the best intentions and no regrets if you wear for people the you will be overcome by whether people accept you or not. It's between you and your creator.

@@indovilletv8601 It's not just simply as wearing it for whom. Unless you are a woman and have experienced such dilemma, then this argument is invalid. One of the hardest things when you return home having been living away in another country whose culture and life style differ quite a bit, is what has come to be known as reverse culture shock. This, coupled with your struggle about the hijab issue must have been hard to handle. But now that you have made up your mind, don't agonise over it. Opinions differ and, truth be told, there is a lot of misunderstanding and misconceptions about hijab. As for your youtube channel, don't push yourself. Enjoy what you do. Not worry about whether you are going to attract the numbers or not. When you enjoy yourself this will show and that will attract the figures. Or not. It does not matter. Your channel is a means for you to express yourself and what you see and feel about the world and your life. It is your alter ego so to speak. All the best, Syifa!

Remember, I dated Muslim women in college. They did not wear a hajib., being observant is not about clothes, but in your heart, which you have a big one. Going home is hard, things change, you change. But it is very hard after being inva restricted regimes. You at handling all this change well. You are special perdon. What I learned, life is change for some if us. We need to challenge our selves. Other people, like no change, the status quo I just right for them. A courageous video. It is not easy to speak such personal things to for the biggest part completely unknown people. I remember you made a video in which you filmed your return to Indonesia (I think you were driving on the back of a small motorcycle and I think also your parents could be seen in it) and when I watched this video I several times was of the impression that you were deeply unhappy and at one moment even close to crying. The first thing that came to my mind when I watched that, was that certain societies or social surroundings, for different reasons, sometimes do people no good. You are way too much an open minded, courageous, widely interested and standing straight woman. In a certain environment (that can be anything from social pressure or harsh rules or a problematic personal past in that place etc.) all these parts of your personality would be supressed and that would harm you and not do you any good. The picture of the bird held in a cage is often used in a kitschy way but I remember when I watched this video I had exactly that association. Sometimes it simply is time to move on in life and walk forward. And, my goodness, you made huge steps, that many would not have the courage or power to make them. I am impressed by the development you have made since you started publishing videos on RU-vid. You have come a long way and stayed loyal to yourself. That reminds me of a saying from E. Cummings: "It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are". In this sense and to make things short: Respect for that very personal video, keep on publishing and I am sure you will reach your goals. Thumbs up!

For what it's worth, thanks largely to random objective factors in your life, you're a typical of what can be called "global citizen". You'll probably be forever "unconnected", as if living in the periphery of any society, destined to watch and assess even the country where you were born as an "outsider". But one needs to keep being positive, as you naturally are. For, as it happens, it's in fact the best place to be a writer and/or broadcaster, in which you are obviously gifted. Incidentally, there's nothing wrong with being an international "critic" and/or "appreciator" of food. It'd be even much better, though even much more hard work of course, if you provide also more of the cultural-history that's behind each dish.) You can continue doing all this by treating Indonesia as your "headquarters" to which you, from time to time return, but stay in diverse foreign countries for longer stretches of time to compile your video documentaries. Good luck Syifa!
@SyifaAdriana
@SyifaAdriana 5 лет назад
I love what you wrote about global citizen and as much as I don't want to self proclaimed on anything, I do associate with your explanation and feel slightly relieve when you said "probably be forever unconnected" because it may be true, and I shouldnt be feeling foreign or alienated about that. It's sad to see that there are a lot of women out there who may also being restrained not to express themselves freely as they should. I don't know how hard your struggle is but please be strong.

I'm a Muslim guy from a conservative family background. And I truly feel how hard it would have been for you to overcome that and live with your own standards, See apart from religious concerns what I believe is that a person should have their own freedom regardless of their gender, religion or race. I respect your opinion and courage similarly to someone who decides to face cover (niqab) entirely. I respect her personal choice and opinion too. My simple message is "please the Lord, not his creations".

I admire your courage for taking on the world. Your family is everything , I know but being independent person like you define who you are. Wear hijab if you feel is the right thing to do but not because you are obligated to do so. Best regards from USA 🇺🇸
@oabuseer

I was raised Muslim but I too had a lot of internal conflict, one of the (many) things being that my sister is expected to wear the hijab according to scripture, but I am not. I think it is tough. Telling one group of people that they have to do certain things, but not others...I just fundamentally disagreed with it, and it was a painful revelation because this was the religion I believed had taught me equality (so I can't imagine how hard it was for you as a lady!) Just know you are not the only one who feels this way- there are hundreds of thousands of us, and it is normal. I hope you find your truth Syifa!

I just returned from Indonesia and Malaysia. I came to an understanding that hijab is wore very differently in Indonesia and Malaysia from other Muslim countries that I know. Hijab in my personal opinion is liberal in Indonesia and Malaysia than other countries- I saw girls singing, visiting night clubs, riding scoters and motorcycle and even serving in bars wearing hijab. My friend is a female singer in Indonesia and her mother wears hijab while she performs - she told me that her mother belongs to Mohammedei sect in Indonesia. Bottom line, I saw a very relax version of hijab in Indonesia and sometimes quite fashionable- I am sharing this observation with people from other parts of the world in US

In my observation, it’s only quite recently, perhaps in the last 10 years, islamic religious conservatism gets stronger in Indonesia and other regions. This is as a result of the emergence of islamic conservative movements in the middle east which spread outside the region. It’s not a religious movement in my oponion but a political movement under the pretext observing and purifying regious teaching. I am an Indonesian muslim married with a courage, brave and strong personality muslim wife. She comes from a devouted but moderate muslim family, who decided not to wear hijab. There is no pressure from her family but from some of her friends. But she always candidly and bravely expresses her decision against those who pressure her. I truly give her a freedom and respect of her own choice and her courage.

It helps when u share your thoughts and feelings and there is always that empty feeling when the routine is broken and we face new challenges . Life is a marathon not a race run at your pace , enjoy the landscape . Meet different people along the way , observing . Listening . Laughing and crying makes life journeys worth living . My advise is Don’t think to much and if you can don’t worry to much because like Gold to reach its brilliance it must go through intense fire to become perfect . I was like you before . Worries and fears that made my life miserable then one day I got tired to be scared and said come what may I will not be scared anymore . Now you made such a long speech with multiple things I feel what you were trying to say is that you tube doesn’t pay that well and you have to be realistic . May I advise to use your teaching skills in you tube so people can subscribe and pay money to learn and maybe you can make it work . Enjoy your life and before you know it you will get old and miss this time of your life I know because at this crossroads of your life is the most exciting so pleeese don’t waste it by worrying . Stop looking down and start looking up . God is waiting to help. you only need to ask . Wish you the best

Hi Syifa, I am new to your channel and enjoying your vlogs. I just want to share a little piece of knowledge with every one who is very concerned with the Hijab thing. Basically what I am trying to explain, are my findings on the topic. Islamic scholars and elders/preachers put grate emphasis on Hijab for women but they don't explain why its is advised to cover the head for both genders. Every human have a chakara on top of our skull, and that chakara is a non physical thing, but it influence on our thoughts and behavior. The reason behind this Hijab or head covering is to protect that chakara from the influence of bed spritts, Jinn and other non physical living beings. It does not apply only to Muslims but to all humans. Long story short, In Islam it is advised to cover the head in order to protect the top chakara. Hope people will understand. every one is free choose their lifestyle.
